It's Scott Bernstein's podcast, Original Gangsters.

There are several episodes on the Colombo Wars, but I was referencing the June 5, 2019 episode featuring Larry Mazza.

Mazza was a capo in the Colombo Crime Family and reported up to Greg "The Grim Reaper" Scarpa.

So has the culture just completely changed? The conventional wisdom always was you only leave the Mob one way, but there seem to be a lot of very public ex-mob guys ... is it just so impotent they don't even worry about capping guys that leave and run their mouths?

  2. Meh. We made the mistake of picking this off of a web site because I let the wife pick the movie. It was obvious from the get-go that Jake was the Janitor. It was just a tortuous two hours of bloviation on things like the new swing set at the old house. I thought the ending made sense - just like the pigs on the farm, he died from sitting still. Like the pigs, he died a slow, agonizing death because he never moved, never left home. Basically like a lot of artsy movies takes a simple concept and tries to outsmart itself with a bunch of boring, unattractive actors and obscure references to literature only an English major or Brooklyn barista would enjoy.

Dude. Working at Taco Deli is not easier than being a lifeguard. Lifeguards do jack shit. Most of these people never have to save anyone in their lives. Maybe they have one "crazy" story about easily saving some kid. This isn't the beach in San Diego - these are very visible and not very deep public pools.

I always figured at some pools lifeguards paid to work there ...

All over the media, classic, social, talking heads, this thread, the CR, etc. Won't get political, but there is more to the ANA's collapse than is being reported. How well does your vehicle work with no fuel? Got Ammo while guarding a forward base. Can you maintain that Blackhawk when your mechanics are not trained fully and your supply chain is halted for spares?

Afghanistan is a logistics challenge. The Brits were tested in Helmand from 2005-2008. The Brits had to fix bayonets in a few places. They could not get ammo in. It is why fighting light militia vs. militia might have worked better.

Helicopters have a hard time in that country. We had the capacity to do air drops into our forward locations when we wanted to. The ANA did not. The tribal leaders did negotiate in advance, but with both groups. it is the nature of the country.

This sounds like a obviously stupid "no shit" response, especially to someone with your experience ... but that was the one thing that never really landed with me (and probably 99.9% of the laity) until I read more details about specific battles and wars ... how wars largely are won as much or more by logistics as the front lines. Even in college classes it was just sort of assumed that all those soldiers had magically, unlimited supplies of food, ammunition, fuel, clothing, medical supplies, etc.

Concur that the spin seems to be the plan was perfect, but the Afghan army quit and foiled its perfection.

  5. Anyone ever had good / bad luck with extended car warranty ... not the robo-dial ones but at least quasi-legitimate ones offered through ostensibly reputable businesses. The experts seem to say "no" that they are not worth it for virtually all consumers, but curious if there are any contrarian anecdotes / experiences? Thanks.

These shitheads banned me for life from using their service and it's quite the inconvenience with certain online activities, stuff for kids etc. that only accept Paypal.

High level - I used to receive cash gift cards (think VISA/AMEX etc) through work.  For various reasons I wanted those converted to real cash in areas of my life that require cash.  The best approach I could come up with was running them through a Paypal account acting as a vendor and selling "services" and paying with the cash gift cards.  At that point I could request a paper check from Paypal which could be cashed, and I was only out a small processing fee on the gift cards.  Seemed like it worked out for everyone involved, Paypal got paid, I got my cash.

That was up until they locked my account and accused me of money laundering.  They held on to $1500 of funds in my account for 6 months until they finally released it and then permabanned me from using Paypal (and eBay) claiming I violated their terms of service. I read those damn T&C's all the way through and no where did I violate anything, they just didn't like what I was doing because I wasn't operating a "true" business that couldn't provide invoices etc.  end of story - fuck paypal.

I'm pretty sure this is the textbook definition of money laundering (and I just finished a Sopranos re-watch, so #expert).

Interesting. Chase says he would allow Terence Winter to run another Sopranos show.

    Make it happen HBO Max!

Ray Liotta would have made a better Ralphie IMHO. I thought he was one of the characters that felt like a little bit of a stretch - Pantaliano got close to the caricature line of trying to make Ralphie a psycho and top earner.
