  1. True, and of course it was a joke. However, most of this junk is moving at least 17-24KPH and if a missile were to hit something before it got up to speed, it could easily rip through one and disable it, if we're being literal here. Yeah chances are probably less than a fraction of one percent, but hey, it could happen!
  2. This is a good one... donate to World Kitchens (under auspices of TripAdvisor) for hot meals for refugees and they'll match it. https://donate.wck.org/give/394390?m=65460&eatoken=3%3AuMIu94klX4ydCXuhABQCKcV0kIsWTySO7eDdMCE0EBvXyPXjcpUcqC67Q35xEyKkz24uCO9U59H9H4jLhgAXSJSq1uCAJd_nOJCZoYbwsm2iYw&nid=VR.eb86719e-9af1-3134-969f-234aae95afeb.TA_EMAIL_TRV#!/donation/checkout
  3. This is why you should always have a Piaget watch on your person when traveling.
  4. Johnny Brown - funny comedian from Laugh-In, Good Times, and a lot more. 84. I just saw this not too long ago, who knew? Pretty cool. RIP, big fella. Edit: UD beat me to it by seconds, but video is still good!
  5. Not to mention the "winter factor" and depending upon the severity of the strike(s), wiping out crops and a lot of fauna that we eat - or making it unedible. Also, when the supply chains either suffer unworkable gaps or collapse altogether we'd have to learn to hunt and eat rabbits or something. Not saying this is definite, but the point here is that just because you're not right in the "death zone" and may be half a continent away, doesn't mean that society wouldn't in part at least collapse and suffering would be enormous. No one really knows which extreme, but I'd put my money on "zap me now" if I knew the next 10 years of my life at least would be reduced to "Naked and Afraid" levels of existence - or even somewhere near it. E.g. this might be an extreme - or might not - but it's kinda stark reading. The notion that the entire planet wouldn't experience severe disruption with advanced nuclear war I think long ago went poo-poo (when we stopped getting under desks, yeah that's the ticket). https://listverse.com/2017/06/23/10-brutal-realities-of-life-after-the-nuclear-apocalypse/
  6. Nuthin' like poppin' back a cold one and watching "Zaporizhzhia City Limits!"
  7. To this end, just got back on here this a.m. and was wondering if there has been any discussion of "Putin's exit ramp" for exactly this reason... the guy's Rubik's Cube is hopelessly scrambled (IMHO) and I saw some stuff on the news overnight to work on giving him some option to "save face" and avoid nukes. I agree w/you that we are pretty damn close to at least tactical ("localized") nukes and he's to me cracking up. I don't know if he's got enough marbles left to recognize that they'd be patronizing him but this "exit ramp" strategy is popping up more and more the last day or so. Does anyone know what's being bandied about for this type of thing?
  8. Still there, just morphed. Now called "space junk" and any missile that goes up there is gonna hit sumpin' and 'splode:
  9. Based on the latest data from the U.S. Energy and Information Administration, Canada is far and away the largest single exporter @ just over 4M barrels a day. Russia is a significant individual exporter of crude oi to Americal, being 4th on the list (after Mexico @600K/d, Saudi Arabia @431K/d. Russia is just over 400K/d. From there it jumps down fairly significantly (200K/d.). https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/us-oil-imports-by-country Not millions of barrels, but still a significant proportion of U.S. imports. Enough to consider upping imports per other countries or increasing domestic production. Of course that would also mean building an extra refinery or two. Which I believe we should do just for this exact reason... emergency production. If we can rattle on about being prepared with the grid in case of a freeze or significant weather event, we sure can say the same about war. I believe Congress will succeed in getting us to stop buying Russian oil, at least I hope so. Given this situation, cutting their energy receipts goes far proportionately above mere percentages. At $40M or more per day, it should end - quickly.
  10. SIAP, didn't see it in the last 2-3 pages, NATO Secretary General rejected Zelensky's request for No Fly Zone, as difficult as it might have been: "We are not part of this conflict," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in denying Ukraine's request.Reuters.com We have a responsibility as NATO allies to prevent this war from escalating beyond Ukraine because that would be even more dangerous, more devastating and would cause even more human suffering," he said following a NATO meeting in Brussels." https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/nato-meets-ukraine-calls-no-fly-zone-hinder-russia-2022-03-04/ Summed it up perfectly for me. I kind of like this guy from what I've seen of him so far. Cool head on his shoulders.
  11. Those last 3 ain't never gonna happen. Maybe the first.
  12. Looks like the worst of it will be a brief, light freeze overnight (Fri into Sat), not a big deal. Then it quickly warms up by later weekend. We're past the massive freeze-ups, but still in the game for light overnight freezes until the end of the month.
  13. Okay, all done. Can't we all just get along? War over!
  14. I always thought he never appreciated what he had. New York is a lot less dirty, crowded, and crime-ridden, and he gets unlimited sex with a woman who can't nag him or whine. And if she runs away, there are tons of non-nagging women he can choose from.
  15. God forbid they employ ex-Maryland Terps, though.
  16. Meh, about 30-40 minutes if continental-launched. However if on a sub, could be as little as 10. You can still stop at Buc-ee's, just don't linger at the bakery, get your kolaches and get moving.
  17. Sure, he'll blink once or twice, look up, and say, "Well why the shit didn't ya SAY so? Holy shit, no one asked me until now! Sure! I'll get right on that! Meanwhile, can you turn on Jeopardy? I wanna see if those new hosts are any good. Thanks!"
  18. And to be fair, he said is there anyone like a "more successful" Stauffenberg. He did qualify it... Can we have a guy like that guy only but not really that guy? Lol I laughed.
  19. I never pulled so hard for an asteroid in my life.
  20. I know this is relative and pertinent info, but sorry, I couldn't help thinking of this when I read it:
  21. Stephen Hawking versus Chris Reeves - The Ultimate Showdown! Went under the radar 10 years ago and quickly got into blockbusters inventory. (Too soon, brah?)
  22. Thread has at least temporarily meandered over to a little bit of a geopolitical discussion, although not a bad one; after reading the last page or two, two thoughts: 1) agree with most of NoNames posts... It's maddening to stand by and feel like your hands are tied as Ukraine suffers, but the line is pretty clear to me that at least for now going in and making offensive military moves in a non-NATO country is not warranted at least, and insanity at most -the line is clear on that. Meanwhile, aid and money is about the best we can do. 2) in no way, shape, or form should we acquiesce in any way to the present Iranian government. Whether we can stop their nukes is one thing, and I wouldn't assist Israel if they tried +as they often do). But to give nuclear concessions to radical islamists (and many of them are!) would be psychotic. I'm not talking about the population. Ten years ago Romney was pilloried for saying Russia is our biggest future threat when it seemed like that was just so off the radar it was silly. Now, 10 years later when the Islamic threat has at least temporarily greatly subsided, it would be equally idiotic to assume that we don't have to worry about that, either. There will always be an Islamic threat as long as radical Muslims have power somewhere. Maybe we don't need to keep both eyes on it right now, but certainly one.
