  1. I think this is partially true for sure, but Putin's been prepping for this really ever since he got electe... er, usurped the Russian presidency. Part of his prep has been amassing a shitload of capital for himself, and very little of that in rubles. Since 2014, he has dramatically upgraded the military and re-engineered it for exactly this moment. I agree with you that this was the opportunity he was waiting for, but he knew for sure, especially since 2014, that he would work up to it and that it would happen.
  2. You must live on Mt. ArmyBrat. I can see the ice and stuff, but that's definitely not the usual for the area. Although you are kinda north, not totally surprising. However, this is the reading from nearby your Arctic house, and this was at 8, never mind it's at least 1 degree warmer now:
  3. And the NS2 pipeline is really nothing at this point... certification wasn't expected until summer anyway, and Russia will just take that gas and sell it to China - at a better price. They just signed a megadeal about 2 weeks ago, ensuring Russian gas for 20 years - paid in Euros - by China. Although the Russo-Chinese alliance at this point is watery and more show than real deep, this alliance has the potential to be the worst thing that ever happened to the world humanity wise. But I don't think it'll get that far - at least while I'm alive.
  4. mini-update: Temps will slowly rise to > freezing by 10 in ATX, by noon in most suburbs, by mid-afternoon counties N and W. Drizzle tapers off by dinner time. Temps actually continue to rise overnight (thanks to clouds) - there might be a brief stretch of clearing late afternoon or evening, but that's just the first storm moving out, 2nd one coming in. That one won't really affect us until Saturday. Friday should dawn > freezing for most of us, temps don't go there again foreseeable future. Any precip from Friday on will be rain. Bridges maybe icy here/there early Fri, but very scattered and the exception. Saturday a more potent storm comes in - with rain and no chance at all of freezing stuff. Once we go above freezing today, this winter event is over.
  5. Hell, there's been so many generators bought in the last year that each Texan has his own personal grid.
  6. One other quick update for ATX: Driving: Basically if there are going to be driving problems in the ATX region, it'll be briefly overnight tonight and tomorrow. Rain is expected to pick up a bit this p.m. into near dawn (off/on) and anything that falls during this period might freeze (or fall frozen). But it'll take awhile for the roads (except bridges) to freeze as it's been so warm. Thurs. the temp will get above freezing by say 10-noon, so most of the problems will be morning rush, and very scattered. Of course, the farther N or W you go, more problems (Advisories for Hill Country counties and north, none (yet, anyway) in WillTravHaysCo). Freezing picks up again Thurs. evening and temps hit freezing in most spots overnight, again until mid-morning Fri., when the entire thing is gone for a day until the next one moves in (but temps will increasingly be warmer through this). So, nutshell: watch driving tonight late/Thurs early, Thurs late/Friday early, then probably outta here. The more N/W you are, the bigger risk.
  7. Interdasting... fastest/farthest recorded temperature drop in Austin's recorded history, from KXAN: Austin’s current record for the largest 24-hour temperature swing stands at 51 degrees set in 1994 when temperatures dropped from 82 degrees to 31 degrees. As of 8:30AM, the temperature dropped to 35 degrees in Austin, 54 degrees colder than yesterday’s 2PM temperature of 88 degrees. A new record.
  8. Like about now. But it's not going to be a bomb blast. It's going to be a gradual cool down through the evening.
  9. As I've posted above, my #1 go to guy now is Zack Shields @ Ch. 7 (weekday morning met). Here's his latest graphic FYI: He's got light freezing in town overnight Thu and Fri (subtract about 3-4 degrees for suburbs), but nothing of any concern at all. I think it could get a little colder than that (models often underestimate cold) but he's usually pretty accurate with this stuff. Good ballpark I think.
  10. I think rain will be very, very light if any, but not a good start to Thursday (< freezing). After about 10 or so I think other than being really cold and maybe a little wet, things improve. Of course if you're on a wet roof in 35° temps it might not be the best day. More details from the other thread: https://www.surlyhorns.com/board/index.php?/topic/22703-2021-2022-texas-winter-weather-thread/&do=findComment&comment=4089679
  11. Cold comes in at dinner time, sticks around 5 days. Models are wavering but most of them stay above freezing daytimes. This could change. One model has us in the 40's during the days, another 10 degrees colder (none yet say below freezing daytime, and I doubt it'll be, but we'll see by tonight). <coin flip> but we should know by tonight. Cold air does have currents and where the coldest drops isn't always even. Nighttimes won't actually be that bitter due to cloud cover most of this event. But high 20's for sure, maybe 5-6 hours per day of freezing, above by 11 a.m. or so. Rain should be mostly rain. Best chance of light icing, mostly N and W of town, into early Thurs. morning. Should be rain, and light, around that in ATX and S and E, but yeah, could see a run of sleet or light brief snowflakes. Highly doubt freezing rain after 2 80°+ days which have made the ground pretty warm. "Worst" icing if at all N and W of town, and that's right now not much (< .10"). This shouldn't really be a "winter storm" of any proportions (NWS has yet to even issue an advisory, never mind a watch). I would just see it as a cold spell with some very light rain/sleet/f.r. if any. Won't really be back as this isn't up to the same level as our last 2 freezing events, unless cold is pushed colder and rain rainy-er.
  12. LOL since I really don't remember anything useful about you or your posts, I took a shot. In reality, I don't give a shit who you are. You're just an asshole who derails threads with personal attacks. That's okay though, you care way more about this than I do. Whatever makes you happy, dipshit. Keep on getting bent over when I post. It's a pleasure to piss you off. Go get a room with Johnny Weir. Grrrrr!!!!
  13. I love the irony of this. Mr. "25 paragraphs 10 times per day to desperately explain why Rick Barnes is good" or some other such that you're busted on, so you are the master. Maybe I learned from YOU! You often write more than Leo Tolstoy on coke. Here, I salute you, since you're obviously too dense to see where you just called yourself out.
  14. Figure skating started going downhill once they took away the thing that it was named after - skating figures. Obviously way too unglamorous to televise but they used to have the skaters out there and judged them on how well they would skate over various figures - like a figure 8, circle, series of "s" curves and other stuff. No music, no "evoking emotions", no weepy bios with the soft piano music and life stories. It was get out there and show us how you can keep your balance in challenging situations. It was boring and humdrum, but it was very technical and the fairest assessment of a skater's ability to control their movements. That went away like I think by 1980, because growing TV audiences and revenues demanded more "emotional" programs, so out with figures, and in with the short program. And now 90% of it is how many loops and twist you can do in midair. Granted that's a tough athletic feat, but it's only a small portion of skating skills. Now it's all (to me) bullshit about "who evokes the emotion in the music" or some shit. Whateverz, momz and daughterz love it, so it's now probably (still) the #1 watched winter O. event. But yes, Virginia, there was a time where this wasn't just a beauty contest with mud-faced judges handing out medals. It actually took some all-around skill and they had a good baseline to go by. But boring never wins. Now it's just usually Days of Our Lives on ice. And now we have Rope-a-Dope to boot. I actually feel really sorry for the Russian chick, she's naturally very good and probably would have won hands down without the drugs. But skating is like gymnastics - populated by shitholes who care less for human lives than they do for mink coats. Whatever. Maybe later I'll run a skating routine on fast forward while playing Yakety Sax. That's a gold-medal winner for me.
  15. Anyone who's raced or skis saw that coming. Mentally she's not anywhere near the Olympics right now. Probably dad memories. Too bad.
  16. I have to admit I don't give much of a shit about the figure skating stuff. Because, well, it's figure skating. U.S. should finish medal total about where they have in recent years, about 3rd or 4th. Norway should win the total again (they have a few cross country ski events left). U.S. doesn't have a lot of other medal potential events left, maybe 1-2;
  17. Also, Finland isn't going to move to NATO for at least a decade. And Ukraine is way below the criteria for admission. Kind of like aggy taking the GRE. Forgeddabouddit. On a more serious note, did you know that this is FInland's Prime Ministe r? Bet you didn't.
  18. So like, did Ukrainian National Day of Unity work?
  19. He was drunk as shit when he filmed it too.
  20. Wouldn't have happened if the tourist would've taken Katy Perry along. Sharks really like her.
  21. Wow!, So now who are the Democrats going to run against Abbott? (Yeah. I know. He was a funny guy, RIP).
  22. I tried. Couldn't get through it. (Good point though, I'd love to hear what he thought of this last episode since it not-so-subtly corked his movie).
  23. PPI up 1% Jan., Core PPI .9%. Jan. Ouch. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/15/producer-price-index-january-2022-.html
