  1. Nah, won't be a grid issue. Because typical 1-2 day freeze. Not 9. Marked by freezing rain. Then ice build up. Then a 10-inch snow storm. Of course if there's any ice build up & it snaps power lines, ain't no grid nowhere that can prevent that. But it doesn't seem like there will be much ice accumulation at all much south of Waco or east of 281. More 2 come
  2. Someone at Dark Sky either didn't get the memo or is related to that crypto Patryn guy who's basically a career criminal... what freeze? And those morning lows on the weekend? Well... let's just see...
  3. I think most of the rain is past us now, however there could be another lighter wave as the atmosphere heats up this afternoon. In any case should be all outta here for the rest of the evening. Then we wait - for the Cold of Death.
  4. I don't think temps are going to get to freezing Thursday, so any precip that falls will be frozen. However it might take the impervious ground (steets) a little longer to freeze due to tire friction. It's simply going to be how fast will the cold overtake the precip, if at all? Right now it looks like 90% of the precip will be out but even 10% could be a problem here/there. But in no way will this be like last year... remember it rained, then froze, then iced all over 24 hours, and it was supposed to get over freezing, but never did, so de-icers couldn't make it out. Worst case scenario. At worst, driving Thursday into Friday morning might be tricky enough to stay home. Friday is supposed to be sunny and just barely above freezing, but the sun should do its thing (remember, on a sunny day stuff can start to melt even at 25° or so because the sun's radiant heat melts stuff. Anyway, overnight Thursday will be one for the books - easily in the teens near most of us, could be single digits not more than 30 miles or so N and W of us. Wrap those things so they won't leak. More later.
  5. Usually a late fall/winter thing, so the forecast for the rest of the winter is... it's starting to weaken as expected, but could last through April in some forms. Here is ENSO's latest summary:
  6. Well, true and not. He did like the bottle, but the reason they didn't hire him again was because of his age (78 at his last year) and that they couldn't get insurance on him (which I'm sure now is a court case). Whether the bottle contributed is probably a good bit of it, but Frawley never drank on the set (kids around, plus it was in his contracts) and tried to be a decent guy. Frawley had said he really enjoyed the show and the writing, and reluctantly left, although he was in pretty bad shape physically by then, and even though he didn't like filming around MacMurray's unusual way (as the star, MacMurray filmed all of his season's episodes squeezed into about 2 months; the rest of the cast had to adjust, doing parts of shows and having to do things to maintain continuity as weeks might go by before resuming filming on a particular episode). Ironically, Frawley was going to be the main character in the show, but then they landed bigger star MacMurray after some concessions, and even playing 2nd banana to him, Frawley enjoyed the role. But I'm sure the alcohol wore him out... he had a lot of health issues when he left the show (died of a heart attack in 1966 at 79). Maybe the worst part of it was that Frawley was replaced by lifelong nemesis Bill Demarest. They always disliked each other since Vaudeville days, would strive to avoid working together, and had nothing kind to say about each other. In interviews, some of the cast would liken Frawley to a "friendly drunk" while Demarest was an "angry drunk" (anyone who's seen the Uncle Charlie shows knows what a curmudgeon Charley - and Demarest - was).
  7. Bingeing this weekend on Decades TV (OTA channel, I swear OTA channels are better nowadays than most pay-for TV!). Watching this show as a toddler is among the first memories of my life, although I have almost no real cohesive memory of it. I really only got to know it through syndicated showings well after it went off the air, and for some reason they almost never seemed to show anything but the last 3-4 years, when the show jumped the shark, got stale, and really was awful. Man, but these early years (1960-64) are being binged on Decades and wow! This was a very, very well-acted and written show, now that I've been watching them... I really can't stop. No wonder this show is still the 2nd longest running live (not animated) sitcom in history - 12 years (for the record, Ozzie and Harriet is still the leader as well, 14 years). Obviously the Simpsons has blown all sitcoms away, but not in this category. I had no idea how good an actor Stanley Livingston (Chip) was as a little kid! He's awesome... all I know is the teenage Chip, who was dry and so flat it was embarrassing. And Robbie (Don Grady) in the later years became the cool oldest brother... but in the early shows he was much, much more animated, schitzy, and angst-ridden - again, much better written for Robbie's part. The 3 brothers fit so well... Mike (Tim Considine) the older, cooler, calm brother; Robbie, the volatile, hyper, angsty middle, and Chip, the mischievous, irreverent little kid brother. The show made much more sense, had much better plots, and actually had Fred MacMurray act, often losing his temper and not just being the plastic "father figure" of the later years. And many of the shows think out of the box - and use the music in witty and funny ways. One show had coverage of a satellite launch juxtaposed with the Douglases' typical day's ups and downs.. frequent jump cuts back and forth. These were exceptionally good shows. I guess they actually started jumping the shark once Ernie got into the family, although by that point when Considine left and Robbie became the oldest, Ernie was the best thing on at that point. Anyway, I'm so glad I got to see these shows, and they're kind of valuable. You can't stream them and I'm not sure they're available for purchase. I'd sure like to get them, at least the first 4 years. A much, much different world than I knew with the ones I've seen. OTA has 3-4 channels that show a lot of lost shows from the past 50 years and I love the hell out of them (Decades, MeTV, Rewind, and Antenna TV).
  8. No one will really know what the temp situation is until about Tues. morning (about 48 hrs. until). But... the most likely scenario is that temp goes < 32° some time Thurs. early a.m. and doesn't go above it until about Fri. after lunch (in some places not until Saturday about 10 a.m.). However if there's any sun on Friday streets should melt as temps will be right near freezing in many parts. Worst night for temps will be Friday overnight, should hit teens in many places, but a "calm" freeze (no wind, no precip). Precip will be light, and most of it will be rain and gone before the cold turns it frozen, but the question is how much will the cold catch up to the rain? Could happen thru Thursday day (sleet, etc.) but this storm is weak (unlike tomorrow's) and won't have much to throw down. Still, driving could be tricky Thurs and Fri. But, this thing is going to move out, as is way way way normal, by Saturday for us, and it's over. Nothing we haven't seen a lot before - in February. Not a bad grid test, but one it should pass with flying colors (although there are now about 500,000 more Texans here than even last Feb.). Even for that grid. A very cold, nasty 2 days. That's it. Be sure to buy your kerosene stoves and knock it up really high, and keep some paper and combustible fabrics very near them to help with the heat (soak them in gasoline first) if the grid fails. And be sure to pack lots of lighter fluid to squirt on yourselves and then light up. Great way to keep warm. Don't prep for winter yet, big rains tomorrow will get stuff wet. Wait until Tuesday, you have thru Wed evening to get stuff protected. Anyway I'll be back as this merits discussion, but 2 days of oh shit followed by aah.
  9. It kinda started sucking through the last 2 episodes (I've seen a lot of boards etc. where people are really griping about the time it's taking to get almost nowhere, and how they've taken the dumbest route possible), but the end of the last one where her boyfriend was shot was a pretty well-done moment. I'm almost ready to bail on the show due to its many goofy things (especially for a show which I thought was going to tout the historical accuracy of the subject) but it's still watchable. Unlike many here I think Isabel May's accent is one of the accurate things (a hybrid Tennessee accent). Anyway beats the hell outta 75% of the other garbage on streaming right now, so... As understandable (avatar out front shoulda told ya), my favorite Westerns are the Lenone trio. GB&U is first (mostly due to the amazing scope of the broad epic plot), but I like all 3 of them. OUTW is just behind them. Everything on Lenone's screen is an adventure in fascination, not to mention the most damn realistic settings in any Western(s), period. You can watch them 55 times and see something new the 56th.
  10. GFS is the model predicting the subfreezing period. ECMWF (Euro) saying nope, > freezing (though cold, high 30's) daytimes. In any case: - 2 day event max. - precip light if any, and very scattered; - this is not some frozen wasteland scenario; after light rain leaves area Wed. overnight, cold air filters in but no real storms; those days will be cold and pt. cloudy to clear. in other words, a not-untypical- but-colder spell for these parts. Very cold but more or less quiet. Nevertheless, my reaction to any sporadic panic-buying, and/or intolerable hype over the grid blowing up for those 2ish days (BTW, not unlike we had last week):
  11. She posted naked pictures of Urban Meyer? Well, I guess that makes sense reading a lot of that thread.
  12. Good rain for Austin Monday. Less but at least some rain for Austin Wednesday. Wed. freezing precip gets close, but nah. Then it gets cold for 3-4 days, like last week (40's-20's in ATX area). The end.
  13. Yeah. From here on it'd be downhill and frustration. Nothing better than being a dilettante! (but I kinda like the game, not really different from crosswords, of which I'm a huge enthusiast, and have done one a day for the past 20 years).
  14. Just noticed this this morning. Man, this is a COLD map, even for January! But this is kinda how it should work for us... despite a chilly morning, Austin will get into the 60's today as La Niña brings warm air up from the Gulf. Our high 30's is still only a few dozen miles from the warmer air in the Valley, which will pool up to us today. Meanwhile, most of the rest of the country is frigid. See, this is why I live in Austin (and not Florida due to the cray). FWIW...
  15. Played for the first and only time yesterday. Got it on the 3rd try (sorry, didn't copy my little Rubik's Cube of squares). Decided I probably won't do much better so I'll stop playing for good now. Fun while it lasted.
  16. Delivering the eulogy at his funeral:
  17. Why just landlocked? Tunisia, libya, mozambique, Somalia, angola, in about 15 other iddy biddy countries along equatorial West Africa say hi. Africa - where military coups are no extra charge on your hotel bill!
  18. My turn? Ok, this and 25¢ will get you a 25¢ cup of... The Horn - stopped listening almost 100%. The only time I do is on the way to the gym or my morning convenience store stop, giving it about 5 minutes. Chad has always been the ADHD goofball - immediate turn to another station. Can't stand his peppery hype. Trey is good but flat as a pancake in his delivery. Anyone else in the afternoon is a beatdown. Babers has come a long way and has a pretty good pesonality, but man he just can't escape Rod Babbles. Erin drives me up the wall... he seems like the nervous babysitter who tries to be cool, but is always concerned with going too far or something. Maybe it's just being plastic or whatever. Dude, you have a personality somewhere, use it. Here's where I differ... I love Bucky. Yup, love him. Why? Sure he goes off topic, sure he asks 2 minute questions that go nowhere, sure he says dumb shit. But... here's the thing: 1) of all the radio personalities, he comes through as the most natural and easygoing. No effort on his part to sound manufactured. And here's the other thing: 2) sports, is and always will be, nothing but entertainment to me. I don't have some personal identity in any team. If Texas wins, I feel good but that's it. If they lose, I don't grip for days. And Bucky brings that "it's only entertainment folks" easy naturalism. Yes, obviously he's not your cup of tea if you want more "serious" sports discussion, but I don't. I love when he goes off on stuff, it makes the show fun, listenable, and above all - entertainment and not some last ditch, gripped effort to be relevant. And if you really listen to him at time, he knows football X's and O's, having played the game on a pro level, better than anyone except perhaps Babers and Jeff Howe (a former college OL I think?). Sure he doesn't come in 101% jacked, he's casual and doesn't give a shit if he doesn't know the 3rd string left tackle for Coastal Carolina. I love his casual approach, like a breath of fresh air. And again at times he can surprise you with his insight. Is he mailing it in? A little, but he's maybe the best radio personality they have, and he deserves a break at 66 or so. Eventually I think he'll retire soon so it won't be an issue anyway. But until he does, I enjoy him. If he's not on that day with Erin, I immediately flip somewhere else. He's the only reason I ever tune it at all. Have to say as well though, that although Craig at first sucked as a show host, he and Jeff Howe have also settled into an easygoing banter, and he's actually pretty good now as a host, and I do like Howe and his not-always-thru-orange-glasses good takes. Show has become really good the past year or two. Moving the dial, I echo Jimmy's sentiment about Dale Dudley. God to listen to his whiny narcissism first thing in the morning every day, I'd be suicidal. I also can't understand why people listen to 3-4 people just bullshit with no-talent stuff like you'd do with your homies at Terry Black's Barbecue. At least a decade or so ago they'd play music. Now, just blah blah blah me me me. I know most stations in the morning have cut music, but god at least most of the others are cheery if not plastic. He should have been let go long ago - but since I've long stopped listening to KLBJ FM I guess I don't care per se.
  19. Obviously Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen started trading in the market about noon today.
  20. Also probably a whole lot of 'em for free at the L.A. Rail System Flea Market and Thrift Shop - if I can beat the rush.
  21. Not to mention that all of the episodes are eventually run on "plain ol' Paramount" on whatever streaming package you have/are stealing. So that massive $5 outlay is unnecessary.
  22. Just about a year ago, my Little Debbie Brownies were $1.49 for a six pack. Now they're freaking $2.65. We are done as a country.
  23. F me for jumping the gun... San Francisco as a team is damn good, I love the way they play tough, hard football. Too bad they have Uncle Rico at quarterback.
