  1. South Austin's mom uses it all the time.
  2. This. The complex is coming into Austin but the heavier more turbulent stuff made a right and once again is going south of town. Forcefield 1 1/2, Rain 1/2, phd 1/4.
  3. Best movie to me: Heartbreak Kid (OODLES better, as usual, than the remake). My Mt. Rushmore of "Best Bullshit Artist Role" ever. Best watching to me: his schtick on talk shows, especially Carson. He was absolutely brilliant. Take care, Chuck.
  4. Update: The morning shift went by, but the afternoon shift is definitely a'comin'. Has ramped up and heavy rain will be upon us for about 3-4 hours, starting in about an hour. It's gonna rain. Oh yeah. It's gonna rain.
  5. I hit your mother's humidity pocket last night Trebek! My mom's deceased, from now on you probably should use my sister.
  6. Update: Looks like today's round is forming up now SW of us and will pass through starting about noon or within the following hour. Not a ton presently, but if it hits a pocket of humidity and lift...
  7. A little less myself. But who the shit knows? I'll be back this afternoon with more on this from my perspective. The complex missing us this morning is a little off predictions. Since that complex has very heavy rains, I wonder what it'll do to model totals? Don't get me wrong - there is still a ton of time/chance that we could get flooding rains - and now that complex is building more south, which should pass over us... but we'll see if it's just a sorta thin line or expands to a larger, flooding blob. But this morning event is missing us. Hmmm....
  8. Hmmm... looking back, I don't remember throwing a brick through their window, so maybe that's not quite a good analogy. I think you missed what that sentiment is. Anyway, unlike some on here, I'm not part of HEB management apparently, who know what they've told customers lately. Funny thing is, I found the official statements and HEB does not absolutely require masks. After the uproar following Abbott's statement in March, they relaxed their policy. Now they will 1) ask you if you have a mask, 2) offer one if you don't, and 3) say thanks. This was a month ago. Their official policy is that they "urge" people to do so. Here's their CEO: Of course some of the Karens (and there are some on either side) don't see gray areas - anyone who doesn't think like they do is obviously an idiot. Yet, when I went there (with mask), I noticed that half the store (yes, half) had no masks on - and see, no one was asking/offering/etc. them anything. It was obvious that they were no longer being sticklers about it - and it was obvious that they were much less concerned about it than even a month ago. Of course if they asked me to re-mask, I would have (and contrary to the Leading Karen Theory of the day) would't have stewed about it. But they didn't, so I remained mask free - and of course violated no official HEB policy in the process. My store clearly was far more lax - without some dreaded phantom fear - about trying to keep customers masked. They simply and obviously didn't care. So did they "lose respect" for their own private business too? Weird. Of course McClelland's statement was from March 8 - 2 months ago - and HEB hasn't updated it yet. They will within the next week or so - they have to, because they'll then be behind the curve of keeping current. The "sentiment" I refer to is idiotic prejudice that if everyone isn't masking, they're doing something wrong. No, now the Feds, State, and many localities are relaxing restrictions - and the "dinosaur" is that thinking masking at this point makes much of a difference is decreasing day by day - and rightfully so. Pretty soon people vehemently into "wear the mask!" will be on the outside, looking in. And I'm talking days, not weeks. No one is "flaunting" shit - they're simply being more forward about de-masking (and of course the CDC is on board). If a place still has the policy, and I want to go there - shock! - I'll wear the mask, and - another shock! - won't grouse about it. But we're now clearly in getting back to normal territory and it should be pretty much ubiquitous within the next weeks. From there (contrary to more idiotic presumption) if someone's still wearing a mask, good for them - it makes them feel more secure, I'm all for their happiness/satisfaction, and would never chew them out for it. So I removed my mask at HEB, no one cared (note: not "got all flustered and wished I would get with the program), and that was it. All good, see? But the time is now that we're rapidly moving towards a de-masked society again.
  9. Pretty nasty complex skirting us but just north (right now). 9 a.m.: Forcefield 1, Rain 0.
  10. Fortunately this sentiment, and Karens like you, are going the way of the dinosaur increasingly each day.
  11. I mentioned my experience the other day about walking around w/o mask and no one cared (managers, etc.). Since HEB is mostly in places unlike Austin, where people are much more inclined to go maskless, I would guess that their policy would "officially" change any day, and/or that in most stores they won't care despite whatever "official" policy is. It's funny - the large banners on the stores that say "local ordinance and national protocol" are now obsolete (well, no one really knows what Austin's policy is - now - because of course they're mum on it since the CDC statement). But since the State policy is no masks required anywhere, they'll be under increasing pressure to let up and have people make their own choice. I would expect some re-statement by HEB within the week. Otherwise I'll just shop at my local one, where they obviously don't care about mandated masking anymore.
  12. ... And sometimes it does. See what the next few model runs bring. NWS isn't going apeshit about it so that's good too.
  13. There's some nasty storms out near San Angelo and west into the panhandle with a lot of big hail & possible tornado reports. However these storms are supposed to weaken before they get here and maybe even fizzle out. But as always, w/a line like that, it wouldn't be unusual for 1-2 to make it in here overnight. The good news however is that the latest NWS models are pushing the rain back into tomorrow daytime and not overnight tonight. Nothing worse than bad weather while you're sleeping. We'll see.
  14. Okay, I usually don't overly pay attention to stuff like this, but this is making me sit up straight. Over the next 3 days, NWS is predicting 7 to 10 inches, and the bullseye is exactly in Travis county. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like this for us since I've been doing weather. Oh, we've gotten a chunk of rain like that, but I don't ever remember us being in the most-rain bullseye statewide. Starts later overnight, runs they Wednesday now, not just Tuesday. Gonna be some kind of somethin' the next few days. This is not just flash flood territory it's houses swept away in Wimberley major river flood territory. Of course, hope not.
  15. Brown v. Board ruling 5/17/1954
  16. Actually in The Cave here west of ATX proper, the bulk of the storm moved E and then SE of us. I got a bit of wind, but only some mild electricity and maybe .25". Easily an inch or more a few places within the swath of NW Austin into Downtown and into SE Travis and east.
  17. Even better: the term was first coined in 1894 by an English clergyman with 8 kids.
  18. Any hope for baseball at Dell tonight Yes No
  19. Severe TS Williamson, high winds and small hail. And this is only the "calm before the storm" day?
  20. Well, okay, 3 more pseudo-quick things: 1) W. Texas is under an "moderate" risk today. That's pretty rarely issued. I've only seen the highest of the 5 levels (mysteriously titled "high" ) issued twice in my experience - both times yeah, it was awful. "Moderate" would also make me uncomfortable. Lubbock, put mattresses on your cattle. 2) We're officially out of a La Niña event now, and into "normal." But La Niña is expected to return later this summer. If you remember (and you probably don't), El Niños are usually cooler, wetter for S. US, Niñas warmer, drier. Our May certainly did not live up to NOAA expectations for their 3-month awhile back, which is actually a little unusual. Although our rain isn't much over normal for the year, and although we have some drought spots in TX, the rain has been spaced out enough that our area is pretty green still right now. See https://www.kxan.com/weather/weather-blog/la-nina-has-ended-for-now-what-that-means-for-central-texas-weather// 3) As usual, what happens in the spring can affect the start of, but certainly not the duration of, summer. No doubt that early June now will be moderate due to all the moisture in the ground - that affects weather. But the last few years we've had cool and rainy early summers - sometimes right up into August - and then it goes Mercurial. For at least 3 of the last 5 years our Septembers have been hotter than our Julys. Interdasting. So as they say in the stock market, "current weather is no guarantee of future results." NWS has continued to up model totals for our area by late next weekend. 5" average. We'll see about that, but they seem pretty sure. I do know that Tues. and Tues. night is the most likely day to get most of it. Probably a flash flood watch issued tomorrow. Careful, that's gonna be the day to watch for. The others maybe. Be back if they ramp up.
  21. Ain't Got Time Fo Dis Shit Weathah: Today: Not a lot of rain. Tonight: Rain. Thunder. Stay Awake. Tuesday: Lots of rain. Biggest rain day. Severe here/there but not everywhere. Tues. Night: Lots of rain. Biggest rain day. Severe here/there but not everywhere. Wednesday: Less rain, but rain once, maybe twice. Wed. Night: Less rain, but rain once, maybe twice. Thurs - Sat.: Less rain, but rain once, maybe twice.
  22. Nah, I don't give them that much credit. I think the "they said" is a bogus part of this, that they were reacting to the national sentiment, not setting a precedent. I think that a ton of people across the country either never really paid attention to them, or stopped more or less completely some months ago. Granted, when they lifted this, a bunch of people who might listen to them de-masked, but I think a much larger majority saw it as "well, if the acolytes feel like they have the green light, then I can rip off the s.o.b. without hassle." More like most people don't listen to them but react to them lifting their own curtain. I agree with you that once they said take 'em off, everyone would be done with them, but more that they won't feel hassled to take them off, not that they believe the CDC. And this seems to be exactly what happened today when I was in HEB, which (I guess) still has a "masks recommended or required" or something. But at least 40% of the people in the store weren't wearing masks. I took mine off and shopped. No one said a word, and I passed at least 3-4 HEB employees, including 2-3 bigger wigs (managers). They didn't seem to care now, either.
  23. Acc. to this graph (which doesn't account for a worse April), about 1.5% of American able workers were receiving unemployment in March, 2021. Now, about 4.1% of them are. That's a helluva lot more than .001%. There's still a lot more people receiving unemployment now (over double the amount) than when this started. Not even close. (Sorry about the weirdness, I ripped off a screenshot without accepting cookies). And, ff course the free money ("benefits") is the primary cause of the unemployment gap (which, as posted just above, is nowhere near where it was in Feb. 2020). A few excerpts: The largest business lobbying group in America on Friday blamed a $300-per-week federal jobless benefit for enticing Americans to stay at home and April’s far-weaker-than-expected jobs report. “One step policymakers should take now is ending the $300 weekly supplemental unemployment benefit,” the lobbying group added. “Based on the Chamber’s analysis, the $300 benefit results in approximately one in four recipients taking home more in unemployment than they earned working." https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/07/us-chamber-of-commerce-rips-300-jobless-benefit-calls-for-repeal.html The only other factor cited is concern by people about looking for work due to fears of getting sick. But the labor force participation has increased by .2% over the last month, which means that more people are now looking - but not taking. I.e. they're passing over lower paying jobs (i.e. restaurants) for stuff like grocery and retail. This is probably why the job numbers shot up in March of this year - all those jobs were sucked up, and now you have the lowest paying ones that no one want. And certainly getting unemployment equal to or more than what people make in the restaurant industry will keep them home, at least for awhile. There is no doubt whatsoever that the benefits have played a huge, huge part in the slowdown. Hell, Joey Boy mentioned it in his speech last week "Please don't stay on unemployment!"). It's a fact. And my wife and I have been out to eat and for at least the last 5-6 times in a row, the service was way, way worse than normal. And clearly, without doubt, although the restaurants we've been in were far from crowded (in a few cases, almost crickets), it was totally obvious that they were barely staffed - 1-2 waitpeople in a room that usually has 5-6. And in one case they plainly told me that they only have "one cook working" tonight. Stuff like that.
