  1. On a bitter cold January night, I walked right out of my hotel room at the Sutton Place Hotel (now known as Thompson) in Chicago. The sound that woke me up was the door to the room slamming shut behind me. I was butt ass naked.

  2. It that still a thing around here?

Buddy’s in-laws have a vehicle parked outside their house for two months. Tags expired since Feb 2020. Window half way down. Full of trash. Parked on the wrong side of the street. In The Woodlands. Called Montgomery County Sheriff. Deputy says car belongs to “someone who lives in the neighborhood”. Deputy refused to take any action, of course. Buddy just wants to know whose car it is so he can go have a talk with them.

  3. ...in recreational amounts.

Holy shit. Bravo, Oregon!!!! HUGE step in the right direction. Treat substance abuse like the health problem it is rather than turning everyday people into criminals.

Apparently a recreational amount of coke is under 2 grams. So split your 8ball in two and make your friend carry half.

Here's a rehash of the older lady who got lost on the Appalachian Trail a few years ago.  She ultimately died, and it was some time before here remains were discovered.  She was less than two miles off the trail.  To be sure, this was a much more remote area and much harsher conditions.  The article states that she was "in over her head", but she had already covered a thousand miles or so. Take home point-finding your way in the woods isn't for everybody.  I could get lost in a phone booth.

Yes. I remember that story. The pin in the map below was the last place she was seen alive. Here’s a description of the terrain...

“Ms. Largay had left the trail in one its most rugged sections, with thick underbrush and fir trees packed so tightly they almost seem to merge.

“You step off the trail 20 or 50 feet and turn around, it’s very difficult to see where the trail was,” said Douglas Dolan, 53, a volunteer who spent time last summer doing trail maintenance in the area. “If you didn’t know which way the trail was, you could easily walk in circles for hours.”

Too bad there wasn’t a major National Park road 50 yards away filled with with busses ferrying thousands of tourists a day.

  5. I second Boat US. At the last possible second they are going to ask you take four photos of the boat out the water and send them in before they will issue the policy. Other than that unexpected hoop, they’re all good. Never had a claim.

  6. First of all, you can’t add names to a deed, or take names off a deed. A deed is just a document that transfers ownership of real estate. It’s not ownership itself

Sounds like you need a Transfer on Death deed. Your dad can sign (and file with the county clerk) a transfer on death deed now. Upon his death, his share of the property will go to whoever he names on the deed, presumably you and your bother. A transfer on death deed trumps a will, and avoids probate completely. Real estate transferred by a transfer on death deed is not even considered part of the deceased person’s estate.

How much does the 2nd wife own? Half? How did she come the owner her share? Did your dad sign a deed giving her half?

Courtier was found Sunday morning in some thick vegetation near the Virgin River not far from The Grotto Picnic area where she was last seen

There’s literally a super easy to hike trail AND a major roadway running right along the Virgin River just steps away from where this chick was supposedly lost.

he Grotto Trail is a short half a mile trail that starts at the Zion Lodge (the 5th stop for the Zion Canyon Shuttle) and ends at the Grotto trailhead and picnic area (the 6th stop). The trail is almost completely level as it follows the canyon floor though a pleasant wooded meadow and then runs alongside the Zion Canyon Road before ending at the Grotto.

  9. No title company is going to handle the sale of the boat. It’s just not what they do. The good news is you can handle the boat sale on your own. It’s similar to buying a car. It’s two separate transactions.

Is the seller worried you’re going to buy one and flake out on the other? If so, give him enough non-refundable earnest money on the house that’s he’s confident you won’t flake.

  10. The mortgage company and title company will probably ask you for a purchase and sale agreement. You can download the TREC 1-4 Family Resale contract from the TREC website. Add the addendum regarding lead based paint if the house is 1978 or older. You can find the seller disclosure form there too. Have your MIL fill that out. You can walk right in the door of any title company with those signed papers in hand and say, “I’m buying a house from my mother-in-law. Here’s the sales contract. What do we do next?” Title company and lender can lead you through the rest.

I am toying with replacing my NAD receiver, which lacks a lot of modern connections, with a "streaming" receiver.

I plugged a Bluetooth adapter into my classic NAD 7240PE receiver and wa-la, instant streaming. Side benefit for this old non-remote-controlled receiver is that I can now adjust the volume via my phone or iPad.

  12. CSB: Driving from Houston to Austin on game day. Flat tire on I-10 just shy of Columbus. Jumped out and changed it NASCAR fast with another Surly poster. Jumped in car and resumed trip. Already had three voice mails from passers by saying, “Yo, Bernard. Was that you I just passed? Call me if you need a hand.” No help needed. #bosslife
