  1. I been feeling like prices going up but every morning when they open up the door if there is a line they know they can continue to raise prices. Until they open the door and there isn't a line the price can stand to increase. I don't have a huge problem with the big increase in brisket prices we have seen but damn when I go to the grocery store and pork is still cheap and you're selling pulled pork for $20+ a pound I got to wonder if it's truly the pandemic causing all of this.
  2. Where are you with bbq prices? I feel like more and more (over the last two years) they have really gotten where I can't afford to go out and eat it at several locations. I had a friend at Hutchins in McKinney the other day and asked for prices.... Brisket...$31 Beef Rib...$31 Pork Ribs...$24 Sausage....$24 Turkey....$24 Chicken...$20 Pulled Pork...$24 Does this stuff get to a point that you can't afford it any more or you definitely get more selective on how many times you will go out to eat? My friend and his family (5) went and it was $160. Another friend and his wife went and it was $80. Think of the ribs that would mean a rack of ribs (3lbs) would cost you $75. I assume as long as there are lines restaurants aren't too worried about the prices because folks are lined up, just wonder if there is a tipping point to the bbq craze? If lunch is going to cost $25 and up then you can get a steak and two sides at Texas Roadhouse for the same price in comparison.
  3. Met and ate at Johns places on several occassions. Any time I would head down to Austin I would make sure I ate there. First time was when he had just started his own trailer and was over on the west side of town which evenutally turned into the original LA BBQ it was John and John Lewis working then I believe. I can still remember my first time and how the smoke hung in the air on a cool Saturday. The food was incredible. Then he made his way over to East Austin and had his smoker and trailer set up. I walked in wearing a Lockhart BBQ shirt and he called me out for wearing another BBQ joints shirt to his place and told me I shouldn't have done that. I order my food sit down and start eating, he waits a while and comes over to my table and sits down and ask me how the food is (It was damn good and I told him so) he laid a shirt down on the table and said "here is a better looking shirt for you to wear next time, and don't tell anyone I gave it to you because I'm supposed to be an asshole". One of the best moments of my going to BBQ joints I've ever had. I went back to that same location a few more times and each time there was something off or missing and you could tell that business wasn't long for being around. I think I have watched every youtube video of John Mueller stuff I can find. I have always been fascinated with the man. We would tweet and DM back and forth and he would always tell me he appreciated me being a teacher. Just a good good dude to me on the occassions we interacted. I saw him in November at BBQ Festival and he looked frail. I will remember the man the myth and the legend that was John Mueller. He would tell you he was a cook, damn sure not a pitmaster. Rest in Peace John Mueller.
  4. These are my boys... Daniel Vaughn new article on Sunbird BBQ in Longview.
  5. It's been that way since they were featured on a Netflix show a few years ago.
  6. Stop at Stiles Switch. Solid.
  7. Yep. Doesn't great pork steaks and homemade boudin on specials.
  8. 1. Cattleack (if you can stand in a line, not open for dinner) 2. Terry Blacks 3. Pecan Lodge 4. Slow Bone (Fried chicken and great sides; not open for dinner)
  9. Bodacious Hallsville isn't a bad option at all and honestly now that Mobberly is closed it's definitely the best Bodacious location of all of them. They do a good crawfish boudin and pork steaks. The couple that runs it are great people also.
  10. US Food Store in Dallas yesterday wanted $5.35 for prime. Insanity.
  11. Bryan is as good a dude as there is in the business. They are going to set up on the north side of Longview at a new big gas station called Heritage at Green Top. 7486 US-259 Longview, TX 75605 Should be opened up pretty soon.
  12. What are prime brisket prices in your area? Went to Sam's in Dallas yesterday and they were $4.09 lb and all they had were 15 lbers. Too steep for me.
  13. Have you had Teddy's in Weslaco?
  14. Must have sold, post is deleted. Dang.
  15. I ate here a couple weeks ago and wasn't impressed at all. Place is priced the same as more well known joints; didn't think the food had any smokiness to it. Most of my friends said it was okay, but didn't like the price they paid compared to others. FWIW Slow Bone BBQ (not on Top 50) should be in any Dallas Top 5 list and way above Blu's BBQ. Had lunch there again today.
  16. Take the ferry from Manhatten over to Staten Island takes you right past the Statue of LIberty and gives you plenty of photo ops an kids will enjoy the boat ride. Go walk around Wall Street, etc. We had passes on the open air bus, you can hop on and off or just ride it around which will give you a good layout of the city and then you can figure out what you wanna go back and see. I would echo the suggestion for 30 Rock; we got up there later in the day and watched the sun set and the city light up. Was one of the highlights of the trip. Honestly it's hard to go wrong in NYC in my opinion especially if you have never been.
  17. Pretty sure I read before they use a 7-8 lb brisket.
  18. Going to San Antonio next weekend. Plan on having lunch at Louie Muellers on Thursday; lunch at 2M in San Antonio on Friday then when I come back home on Sunday stopping in Rockdale at Brett's Backyard BBQ. Has anyone been to Brett's??

  20. 10 Fifty in Richardson off 75 has improved past Lockhart in Plano in my opinion. Wasn't once that way, but my last few meals at each have been better at 10 Fifty.
  21. If you stop in Lafayette there is a Swamp Tour going East towards Beaux Bridge we did it a few years ago and it was great. You get a boat tour and a see lots of gators and wildlife I'm sure your six year old would love it.
  22. Old Time Grocery in Lafayette has the best po boys I have ever had.
  23. Cooked for 60 folks on Sunday. Smoked two 12 briskets, I think they ate one. Smoked 3 eight lb pork butts, I would say they ate one. 10 pounds of bologna, they ate 5 lbs. (Oklahoma folks like their smoked bologna), Smoked 12 racks of St. Louis ribs, they ate 9 racks. This will help me figure out estimations for next time. That's the most people I have cooked for at one time. All in all turned out pretty decent; brisket is still a struggle. Pulled at 200 degrees but still not happy with the results. I may try and smoke one without temp probes next time.
