“I never believed for a second I was being bullied,”
Professor Chesney replied to hpslugga's topic in Football
This is a terrible take. One guy is clearly going to therapy and trying to move past this ordeal because holding grudges and being perceived as a “victim” is not a good optic in the business world. I’m not going to dispute what Moose is saying now, but the word from those connected at the time was that this situation was incredibly fucked up and toxic. One would hope that one would be able to mentally toughen up when getting paid millions to play a game. But shitty work environments have derailed countless careers in every industry. I remember Martin as a good guy and glad he’s moving forward. But sure, Incognito is basically the same thing and totally well-adjusted: -
2025 Texas Coaching/Support Staff Thread

*Karl* Scott would be a great hire. https://rolltide.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/karl-scott/1077 -
I was strictly speaking about the players as they were on that 2016 team, not the best version of themselves during their career. Obviously peak Devin Duvernay in 2019 and Lil Jordan in 2018 would have started on last year’s team. But even with better scheme and coaches, generally a freshman is still a freshman. In 2016 Devin Duvernay only had 20 catches…but he was still averaging 20.6 yards per catch and was criminally underutilized. Fucking dumb. I’m coming around to your view. I really underestimated / repressed the sheer incompetence of the Charlie Strong staff. Malik was not a good linebacker in 2016. But 2 years of competent development under Choate/Nansen probably would have produced a completely different player. They turned Overshown into a 3rd round pick in that same time period.

Taking a look at that 2016 roster, there was a surprising amount of talent, but even so not many would have cracked the two-deep last year or this year. Starter Caliber: D’Onta Foreman (RB), Poona Ford (DT), Conor Williams (OG) Likely in the rotation: Chris Warren (RB), Deshaun Elliot (S), Hilton Hill (CB), Andrew Beck (TE) On the bubble: Malik Jefferson (OLB), Devin Duvernay (WR) A lot of players didn’t put it together until Herman came in. Despite having more NFL players than a lot of other teams, the talent gaps and the coaching were so atrocious that it didn’t make any difference. We’ve come a long way from the days of Jake Oliver and Nashon Hughes taking meaningful snaps.

I’ve always wondered why teams don’t have a goal-line package of offensive linemen with strengths suited to the more limited set of play calls. I’m sure there’s a good reason for it (continuity, communication, etc.), but you see it for other positions groups (WR/TEs, DL, LB).

Shocked at the amount of negativity that the mods are allowing on TexAgs. Usually by this time of year the masses have put the failures of the past season behind them and started guzzling the koolaid. Guess it is pretty hard to be excited about next season when your underwhelming defense just lost three defensive linemen that are about to go in the first two rounds in the NFL draft without any comparable replacements.

Transfer Cycle 2024-2025 - Handjob Helobious Is the Man!

It’s funny that Niblack’s atrocious blocking wasn’t even relevant because he couldn’t pick up the bare minimum of the playbook necessary to see the field. But seriously, why are all of the Alabama transfers so damn weird? Hall couldn’t handle criticism and had an ongoing jihad against campus parking authorities (which I fully support). Billingsley was too soft and weak to support a baffling level of entitlement. Kendrick Blackshire didn’t have the discipline to go on a diet and transferred out to UTSA instead of staying on a winning program at a flagship academic institution. Bond apparently had a room temp IQ, a bad attitude, and was so utterly inept at blocking that I was convinced he was sandbagging second down run plays on purpose to increase the chances he got targeted on a third and long. I can understand busting due to a lack of talent, but the entitlement and laziness just seemed so at odds with the myth of a Saban-lead program. -
Texas Recruiting Notes 2025: Duck Around and Find Out
Professor Chesney replied to texifornia's topic in 🤫$9.95🤫
On Texas released their player rankings/grades for the Texas Class Generally Gerry’s rankings make a lot of sense but few things surprised me. First, I am a bit shocked to see Jonah Williams ranked first overall given the other top end talent in the class. Understand he is super athletic and fluid, but safety usually takes at least a year or two of seasoning to understand the position. His baseball practices will take away study time and reps, which could slow this development further. Even Caleb Downs, who has elite speed and probably came in with the best understanding of the position of any high school prospect in recent memory, took multiple games to get comfortable. I’m also surprised to see Lance Jackson and Michael Terry ranked so “low”. Both players stand to make huge athletic/strength games coming from “normal” high schools instead of power programs like Katy, Allen, or Southlake. Lance Jackson in particular might be the most athletic recruit in the class AND one of the most likely to maximize based on work ethic, etc. Just an absurd combination. Finally, not sure if Kaliq Lockett is ranked too low or too high. Receivers are weird to project, but it seems like those without elite speed are less likely to become superstars (although this is purely observation and not based on any kind of data). Lockett only has average long speed and is raw as a route runner, which would ordinarily temper expectations. While he has the burst and fluidity to still somehow achieve just enough separation in high school and in camp 1-on-1 settings, it isn’t a sure thing that he can do this consistently at the P2 level. But despite those short comings, he is truly ELITE at body control and contested catches. I don’t know if Texas has ever had a prospect with these skills, maybe the $9.95er mythologized practice version of Troy Omerie that no one got to see. He looks like Matthew Golden catching the ball. If he learns to run better routes and has at least moderate improvement athletically, I could see him outplaying this ranking. Curious if anyone else has final thoughts on the class. -

Scuttlebutt from Georgia side is that Ohio State coaxed him into the portal. So this has a similar feel to a few years ago when that Alabama linebacker that Arkansas tampered with still gave us a look, but it was already a done deal. Would love to be wrong though. -
Curious what running scheme those teams used if they primarily got those yards running between the tackles or running outside plays. It seemed like our outside zone scheme floundered against faster, more athletic lines like Georgia or ASU, and flourished against bigger “stronger” lines like A&M. Ohio State’s D isn’t as athletic as Georgia imo, but they are close and in theory have the makeup speed to catch up to our outside zone/screen plays. I wish Sark would have a little more willingness to run Gibson on inside zone because that sets up the RPO plays (like we did against Michigan and Florida), but I don’t think he has the willingness to change it up this late in the season.

From the USC boards, good size and athleticism but has been constantly injured and hasn’t picked up the playbook very well. In his defense, he was coached by Alex Grinch who didn’t teach or develop anyone else there. Pre-injury, would compare to a less athletic Xavier Filsamie. Now? Its anyone’s guess. -
Shockingly prescient post.
