  1. It's not an issue, as evidenced by the fact that the one time it occurs it causes national headlines and prompts a six-page (and counting) thread on the Surl. If it were an issue, then it would be so commonplace that it wouldn't even earn your (or any other poster's) notice. You'd be like "pfft--another one. That's some bullshit." Kind of like how Americans are about school shootings now. That's an issue. And Americans' callousness and non-recognition of when another one happens tells you just how big an issue it is. This, however, is completely fabricated.
  2. Well I hate to say this, but all of our restraint-urging is pretty pointless if we're not going to impose any consequences for non-restraint. And so far, we haven't shown any inclination toward imposing any consequences. The closest we have come is not vetoing a pretty weak-kneed resolution in the UNSC after Israel went in and wantonly killed a few dozen thousand civilians in Gaza. But notwithstanding their non-restraint in Gaza and Lebanon, we haven't done anything toward cutting our material support for Israel. And with our current political situation, it is a little difficult to imagine us doing so. So the leverage we have with Israel is pretty non-existent. Who really cares what Israel's response should be, given that we don't have the present ability to impact it in one direction or the other? At this point, it's just a "que sirah, sirah" situation for the United States.
  3. I suspect this is part of the battlefield-shaping phase of Israel's coming aerial offensive against Iran. If Israel wants to attack Iran, it doesn't exactly have to go across Syrian and Iraqi airspace, but it sure makes it easier. But Syria has a whole bunch of Russian air-defense weapons systems, including Pantsir-1s and S-300s. Now, Syria has a lot less ammunition for those air-defense systems. And that makes a route to Iran over Syria a whole lot easier. And by the way, if you're Iraq right now, you may just want to declare your airspace open.
  4. I don’t know whether this goes here or the Ukraine thread, but whatever:
  5. And there is something of a prisoners' dilemma, isn't there? We'd only need one vote. Who's going to be the one to supply it? Because we're only making this deal with one person.
  6. Forget Susan Collins. You offer Lisa Murkowski anything she wants to go from I to D.
  7. It's not a new thought, and I share it. But I one add one thing: the era of the "media monoculture," as you describe it, was really very brief. It lasted from roughly 1925 to roughly 2010. Before 1925, there was no mass media. People got their information from local newspapers, word of mouth, and just made-up bullshit. You had newspaper moguls like William Randolph Hearst who were able to move public opinion on major national issues. And you had newspapers expressly backed by the political parties. But apart from that, people lived in their own bubble getting the information to which they made a conscious effort to expose themselves. And ok--maybe that wasn't great. I mean, we had a civil war. But for most of the history of democracy in America and elsewhere, that's how it has always been.
  8. I mean, objectively, yes. But as an SMU Law grad and a guy whose wife is a UCF alumna, there's a lot for me to like. The potential for Mrs.LL to lord yet another UCF victory over her UF friends when they come to town next month is just too delicious.
  9. As is often the case, you're exactly right. But I think the Bill of Particulars omits a critical item: pathological liar. And maybe that's not much of an indictment anymore, but it should be. He bet on games involving his team. He denied it. Then he admitted it. Then he denied it again. But then he admitted it. But then . . . yeah--he denied it again. His story changed with whatever he thought would benefit him at the moment. And his lies damaged the League. Pete Rose was a piece of shit, and baseball is better off for his passing.
  10. To clarify, the proper legal term is "benchslap."
  11. Stars fans have been doing that for 30 years. At least as far as the NHL goes, they were the first to do anything during the anthem. And I'll just go out there and say that playing the national anthem before sporting events is dumb and antiquated and ought to be retired.
  12. I predicted it elsewhere, and my prediction on 2024 conference champions is still on track: B1G: Oregon SEC: Texas ACC: SMU Big XII: Utah Ok--that last one isn't looking so hot. But damned if an all-newcomer slate of conference champions wouldn't be funny as hell.
  13. Kentucky getting only six votes is puzzling to me. They just beat Mississippi at Oxford and lost by 1 to Georgia. I'll acknowledge that the loss to South Carolina was not great (to put it mildly), but isn't that what we expect of teams in that 20-25 range?
  14. Goddamn Big 12 refs.
  15. Just amazing. And what a change in the SEC from when Alabama and LSU would play 7-3 games.
  16. We live in a universe in which my Ponies are going to beat Florida State by more than the Longhorns beat…you know what—don’t even fucking worry who the Longhorns played. We’re watching SM fucking U kick the shit out of Florida State. Unreal.
  17. The SMU Band mockingly playing the war chant is the content I’m here for.
  18. Buncha fucking appellate lawyers arguing standard of review all of a sudden.
  19. That was fantastic!
  20. Thank you for your forbearance.
  21. Wrong—the DB really didn’t touch the WR. The WR launched himself backwards to try to get the flag because he knew there was no way he was going to get to that ball because it was so badly under thrown.
  22. Make-up call.
  23. What a shitty call.
