  1. But then I’d end up in Folsom Prison.
  2. Oh, and it was right out front of Ted Lorenz’s office. And it’d be unseemly to steal work from him like that.
  3. Look—I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t have the thought. But the guy was probably homeless. So really—what’re his damages?
  4. And that’s a first. Which for a man my age, is kind of extraordinary. Those of you who served in combat have undoubtedly seen it many times. I haven’t. Driving home along 360. Some guy decided it would be a good idea to cross the highway. It wasn’t. Car ahead of me hits him. Anytime a shoe flies off, it’s bad. This was no different. I suggest someone check his pulse. He doesn’t have one. Someone has the presence of mind to start chest compressions. That actually works, from the standpoint that it started the blood flowing as evidenced by the growing pool of blood from the back of his head. I didn’t do shit to help. You think you’d be a superhero in that situation. I certainly wasn’t. I stood there fairly slack-jawed. Then I went to Maudie’s and had a couple margaritas. I’m not feeling particularly great right now.
  5. 1) Those are good uniforms. 2) Good luck to him. That's a program that deserves better than it has gotten over the past few years.
  6. Because aggy loves America much more than you do, you stupid t-sip. How could you not know that? The thing I'm puzzling over is that fucking patch. You've got ATM over an outline of the map of Texas. Ok--so far so good. But then you've got an American-ish flag. I say "American-ish" because for some reason it has 29 stripes and (by my rough count) about 87 stars. But whatever--if you're going to have an American flag, shouldn't it be over a map of the United States? There's just a lot of aggy going on with that fucking patch, and it really makes me a bit insane.
  7. Well, that’s just terrible.
  8. Sorry—there are no houses in Tuscany. You see, they’re passed down from generation to generation. So it’s really impossible to get a house in Tuscany.
  9. That's kind of where I am, too. It's kind of a show that fit perfectly with its moment in time. But it had a lifespan. And I think we're well past that lifespan. I suppose I'll probably watch. Maybe.
  10. It wouldn’t be a Trump presidency of I didn’t find myself at the goddamned HEB panic-buying some commodity as it gets cleaned off the shelves. At least it’s champagne this time and not toilet paper.
  11. Roman pizza is different--it's a very bready crust. Kinda the antithesis of Neapolitan. Bonci Pizzarium just north of the Vatican a block down from the Cipro Metro stop is fantastic, but you're already familiar with that one. Yeah--I know Rome is going to be busy. Not much that can be done on that. I'm hoping that this year being a Jubilee Year is going to make next year relatively less crowded. I mean, that and a recession. But real talk on Rome--if you book the tourist sites ahead of time from the actual legitimate agency (not some tourist operator), then it's really easy going. You don't have to stand in lines at the Vatican Museum or the Colosseo if you went online and just booked that shit. I acknowledge that it takes away some of the spontaneity of travel. But I'll trade some spontaneity for not standing in goddamned lines. I'm definitely interested in Rimini and Ravenna. But you would do that over Bologna?
  12. That's part of my question, I suppose. I think we're pretty flexible. Obviously, I'd want to be in Rome before it gets too hot. And in Lake Como afterwards. So early June? Maybe?
  13. You have no idea how accurate this is.
  14. I don't have the first fucking clue. I was chatting with the guy next to me and little did I know that Mrs.LL had seized the bidding paddle. So if the location was identified, I certainly didn't hear it.
  15. So it looks like Summer 2026 is going to be in Italy. We went to the Eanes Educational Foundation gala Saturday night, and one of the many things at auction was a week at a villa on Lake Como. And obviously since I'm posting on this thread, I somehow managed to be the high bidder. So I've got a week on Lake Como. The kids (they'll be 17 and 15 in Summer 2026) are keenly interested in Rome. So probably between five and seven days in the Eternal City. Otherwise, . . . help me, @texasdago--you're our only hope. Spend a week in and around Bologna? Or start down in Naples? Catch a train over to Venice? Just please no Florence. I don't like Florence.
  16. Right--so we should fully expect Miro to play in the playoffs. Right? And Seguin too, for that matter.
  17. On this point, the German Type-212 attack submarine is a very effective weapon to counter the Russian naval threat in the Baltic and North seas. We scoff because it's a diesel-electric boat. But the reality is that it's probably quieter and less detectable than the Virginia Class.
  18. Isn't the LTIR move just so that he won't count against the salary cap for the playoffs? It's the same loophole that Vegas used last year for Matt Stone, right? That's been my understanding of it, at least. And if that's the case, Miro may be able to come back today for all any of us know.
  19. Yeah--I actually had that thought. But I don't know what else we possibly have to trade away.
  20. Yeah--that's a legitimate idea. The Green Mountains are beautiful, and a stop in at Ben & Jerry's would be great. But at the same time, I have to tell you--lobster is about Mrs.LL's favorite food in the world; oysters and whole-belly clams are two of mine. So it's a bit hard to peel us away from the coast. And if I only have three or four days, it's not like we're doing just a whole lot of exploring anyway (not that Vermont is so big that it can't be explored in a short period of time).
  21. I have a wicked trial schedule in September/October, and the Longhorns are out of town on Labor Day weekend for the first time in forever. So I'm thinking of taking a long weekend in Maine over Labor Day with the family (kids 16 and 14). We were last up there when they were 7 and 5, so it's been a minute. We drove up from Boston to Portland, so we've done the whole York/Kennebunkport/Ogunquit drive. And I'm not saying I wouldn't do it again. I'm just saying I've done it. When I was a kid, we went up to Maine roughly every other Summer. So I have some recollection of the area all the way up to Machias. But damn--it's been a while. So I'd really like some thoughts. Probably only three or four days (leave Wednesday or Thursday, back Monday or Tuesday). So time is limited. So . . . just stay in Portland? Easy enough to do and fill up three or four days. And I kind of wouldn't feel like I had been to Maine if I didn't have a twin dinner at the Lobster Shack at Two Lights or have a meal or two at Eventide. I think the kids would like whale watching (even though it's slightly after the peak of the season, though with global warming, I'm not sure that's even true anymore). Or we can go up the coast somewhere, . . . but where? Boothbay Harbor is a nice little town. I remember Camden being nice--someone upthread characterized it as the most "bougie" town on the Mid-Coast, which is (1) right and (2) just Mrs.LL's speed. I remember Rockland also being a good spot. C'mon, surl--help a brother out.
  22. Real secondary sanctions of the type we have against North Korea. Any company that does any business with North Korea might as well be a North Korean company; it is completely barred from doing business with an American company. There has been a lot of reluctance to do that because of the extended consequences of that action, particularly with respect to Chinese companies. But there's some concern about it with Indian companies too. And it would further incentivize de-dollarization. But maybe if we're going to trash the dollar in favor of crypto or other such nonsense, we don't really care about those consequences anymore.
  23. I would read that book. Kind of an anti-Jack Aubrey.
  24. I will just never understand how Donald Trump (of all fucking people) captured the imagination of people like this.
  25. That's an excellent and underappreciated point. I'd also observe that Ukraine has a lot of intelligence capabilities inside Russia that aren't readily reproducible.
