  1. Virginia Senate tells UVA it will face state funding issues if they comply. https://www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2025/10/virginia-senate-leaders-express-unequivocal-opposition-to-compact
  2. He's the guy NYC has been yearning for since Lenny Dykstra rode off into the sunset.
  3. Curious that there is not one US History professor. You'd think that would be a good perspective to have on a committee like this, right?
  4. Looks like the Dartmouth president said no. Southern Cal faculty overwhelmingly voted no, as did the faculty at MIT and the faculty at Arizona. 97% of UVA faculty are against it. Any word on UT faculty taking a vote/issuing a statement?
  5. I thought that was what AI is for. Side question: If colleges just push out automatons and AI handles all the beginning/mid-level tasks, where does senior leadership come from in 20-30 years? Answer: Probably current leadership's failsons.
  6. Good piece that really shows the absurdities and contradictions, and anti-intellectualism of the "compact." Author is a prof at UVA and a UT grad. https://newrepublic.com/article/201376/trump-compact-academic-excellence-university-virginia j
  7. Still a lot of Dupont money in that state.
  8. I guess we have the answer. From today's WaPo article: But hey, at least we'll get invitations to hang with the President: Of course, when you read the following, it's clear it's all a big grift and any leadership that signs up for this is encouraging extortion and placing their school at the whims of highly partisan bureaucrats. I don't think you can remain a university in the basic sense of the word if you're always looking over your shoulder and trying to appease these guys: Maybe we'll just be eaten by that other school in town--The University of Austin Longhorns? 9. The White House has named nine schools, including Texas, in a letter and says that if they comply with the administration's priorities, they will receive preferential treatment for grants and funding. The schools are being asked to ban the use of race or sex in hiring and admissions; freeze tuition for five years; cap international undergrad enrollment at 15%; require that applicants take the SAT or a similar test; and stop "grade inflation." They will be required to share all known information about foreign students. It also obligates them to abolish departments that “purposefully punish, belittle, and even spark violence against conservative ideas.” Also in the letter: "If universities sign and then violate the terms of the compact, they could be forced to return. private contributions." Finally, they would have to commit to strict definitions of gender--"Whatever that is?" asked the biology professor. WSJ: NYT: If UT does go along with this, I think our Public Ivy rep will be short-lived. And really, limiting foreign students who pay full tuition and then capping tuition will put many of these schools underwater.
  10. Richmond and parts of NC absolutely must be considered part of the Deep South. I think this is a pretty good map of the historic Deep South: A bunch of vocabulary, pronunciation, and accent maps follow similar lines:
  11. In Spain and desperately seeking a decent link.
  12. Both my kids grew up in the PNW and stayed in the area for college, even though we made trips to UT and other places. Both are now in the EU working on grad degrees and I have no expectation that they will come back to the US. Youngest is working on a global public health degree in Germany and wants to focus on refugees. Oldest is in Spain getting a PhD in something about droughts, floods, and food supply. If they and their HS/undergrad friend group is any indication, there’s a definite brain drain going on. One friend is doing a PhD at Glasgow, another is looking to move to Denmark after finishing a residency, another is planning on doing Econ post-doc work in the UK, one is applying for biology grad programs in Germany, and several others are looking to make the move. Only one of the 12 or so is completely augured into the US. No Cloak, but did I mention they are all females? My PhD daughter gets a small stipend, but even without, tuition would be negligible and degree is only three years instead of four—mostly because they don’t make you teach or TA anything. MS daughter also gets a little break and has fortunate timing as this is apparently the last year for fed loans to grad students (or something). She’ll either hook up with an NGO or go get a PhD. FYI: in the US, three women get PhDs for every two guys and the gap widens every year. Smart women migrating within and outside of the US will have definite effects, many of which will be not good. Again, no Cloak Room, but we are repeatedly hitting ourselves in the nuts and it seems like we will continue to do so. Foreign universities may seem a non-starter to many right now, but that can change quickly, particularly as people do it, talk about it, and make it more visible and accepting.
  13. I disagree. It is the shortest month.
  14. 15-16 is an OK number, but I think 22 starting-level players is better. If we only start 7-8 on each side of the ball we may not be ranked #1 for long.
  15. I had to read that a few times. I think this is what he's saying: Start with 1s vs 2s. Move on to 1s vs 1s and 2s vs 2s. Only after that does Sark change it up and go with even more of 1s vs 1s and 2s vs 2s.
  16. Forget the 85 Bears. Will these guys be better than the 83 Daingerfield Tigers? That's the only question worth asking.
  17. Bruce Campbell moves between character actor roles and leads in weird B-movies.
  18. My favorite is Neville Brand.
  19. Richard Gere and the gerbil say hello.
  20. Scariest movie I saw in high school was Midnight Express. Gave me nightmares for months. After I saw it, my parents never had to worry about me ending up in prison or visiting Turkey, I can sure tell you that.
