Hey mchookem, I can share some of my experiences with cardiac ablation procedures for afib. I'm a 64 year old male, and I've experienced afib most of my adult life. In my 40s it began to occur more frequently, so my cardiologist had me taking flecainide as a "pill in the pocket" whenever an afib event would occur...the flecainide would usually return me to normal rhythm within a day. It finally reached a point where the afib was occurring very frequently, so in 2011 (when I was 52) I had the cardiac ablation procedure...it kept me basically afib-free for the following 2 years, but by the end of year 3 the afib had returned fairly frequently. The flecainide would generally help, but by early 2022, I started having extended afib events and medication was not helping any longer. So in September 2022, I had another ablation procedure, and I have been totally afib free since then (1-1/2 years, cross my fingers). I've been told that sometimes multiple ablation procedures are needed, but my cardiologist seems confident that with the recent ablation my afib has been permanently eliminated. If you're in the Austin area, I highly recommend Dr. Paul Coffeen with the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia group...he performed both of my ablations. In my old age, I have developed PAC (premature atrial contractions) which is basically an occasional skipped heart beat, but the doctors tell me that is fairly common for us older folks and is not related to my past afib.
I've been lurking on Shag and Surly going back to the Malikmas days (2015), and have been wanting to begin posting some, so you're afib post was the one that finally drew me out. As an old guy, I'll definitely be posting on this thread fairly often, I'm also well-experienced with the colonoscopy procedures (I've had 6 or 7 so far). I'm a 1982 UT architectural engineering graduate, and have been a diehard Longhorn fan since I was in 3rd grade (when I first really began understanding sports), and I was totally hooked after the 1969 national championship.
And yes, I like cats, that's our girl Boo in my profile picture.
I hope this helps!
