  1. it wasnt that bad. Actually brought 5 rushers out of the 3 DL look, if I recall. The only one I hated was the double spy look on 3rd and 10 (bringing 2 in the rush). I believe that was the only one he brought less than 4 on that drive, but I didnt go back and look.
  2. Switch RB rooms with Georgia and the Texas run game gets much better
  3. Not excusing Majors, but that was not easy. Vandy brought double A gap blitz from the ILBs. #10 came on the delay. Majors helped the guard on #4 blitzing (who went right Majors by design) and came off late to get a piece on #10 (right A/B gap). With RG widening out with the DT, it left a lot of room for the delay blitz. Nice cut by the RB to avoid contact with #10 on the play. I dont think he has much pass protection responsibility on that, but being a football player would have been helpful there (not easy though).
  4. This is was true. Scip put out the intermediate numbers and they are troubling. Ewers was completing ~69% of his intermediate throws, which represented ~29% of his attempts last year. This year it is ~50% and represented just 16% of attempts since coming back. The intermediate game was Ewers' great asset last year. It has oddly disappeared this year.
  5. He definitely took a step forward from OU and Georgia, which was likely. His pocket presence is still a bit sketch at times. I think there needs to be a lot of work done on the offense during the bye. Here is the biggest reason. Pts per drive allowed: OU: 1.39 10th Georgia: 1.66 24th Vandy: 2.51 91st Florida: 2.25 75th Ark: 1.97 49th Kentucky: 1.98 52nd A&M: 1.76 31st The 27 pts vs Vandy was not good. Only Kentucky, Alcorn St, and Ball State scored less vs Vandy. That is a Vandy team that turned the ball over twice all season. They turned it over 3 times vs Texas. I believe the defense has created 6 turnovers the last 2 games and the offense has 10 pts off those. That offensive performance is probably enough vs Florida and Kentucky. It probably isnt enough for Arkansas and A&M.
  6. Not his kind of game. That is an offense you need a lot of discipline from your edges to beat. That isn’t Simmon’s wheelhouse right now. Pavia would have went under him every time he got too far upfield
  7. RB is a big part of that. They aren’t very good between the tackles and Texas hasn’t run much inside. RB pass blocking is a roll of the dice
  8. There is some nuance to that. I was hard on Ewers after OU and Georgia, but this was a bit different. Texas was behind the chains the vast majority of the 2nd half. I think Texas committed 6 penalties on the 4Q alone, most on offense. 2 and 20 is not a good for an OL or a QB. You are just asking the DC to come up with the craziest in his playbook. The offense put itself in a really tough position to succeed in the 2nd half. It was generally fine when it was on schedule. Doesn’t mean everything is good, but certainly puts the 2nd half into perspective
  9. Odd thing is it feels like the run blocking is better, than pass pro now. There is a lot of issues going on with the offense. Pass protection is hit or miss. By that I mean OL, RB, and even TEs have all contributed to poor pass pro. RBs are all scat backs. I was disappointed not to see more Gibson (I know blocking is the reason, but not like blue and Wisner are great there). Quinn appeared to take a step toward better play vs Vandy. He wasn’t bad. The one issue not touched on here is the offense is not threatening enough of the field. Sometimes it feels like the entire offense is designed to go to the flats. Majority of runs are outside. 75% of passes vs Vandy were at or behind the LOS. Most of those out on the edges. DBs can see the film. Bolden did a stop route vs a Vandy CB and the dude never took a step, he just stood there and made the play. Texas has to start punishing teams for over-playing the short game.
  10. I like Surly, because you can never guess what will show up in a thread. I have to say someone calling Sark out for not calling enough screens was not on my bingo card. Bravo!!
  11. That was stupid. I meant McDonald. No idea where Roberson came from, maybe I thought this was the special teams penalties thread
  12. 2 of those plays are on Quinn. Not so much that he should have made a play, but that he can’t take the sack. 1st one being the RPO look with free guy coming off the edge. Kind of pump fakes there and eats it. 2nd free blitzed from the secondary. That’s Quinn’s man. Can’t eat it there
  13. I have to add some positivity in this thread. Taaffe was great. Roberson was excellent. He is a bad ass coming down and tackling in space. This will piss people off, but Gideon has done a great job with that room. Seems every time a new guy steps in they don’t miss a beat. Moore played his best game as a Longhorn. Need to give some love to Kobe Black. Looks like he has ascended to the 3rd CB and his play on the field confirmed why. Love seeing the babies make plays
  14. I think Quinn is a pure rhythm passer. When he can drop back in a clean pocket and hit his 1st read he is amazing. You saw that when Vandy was playing back for most the 1st half. When that 1st read is taken away, Quinn gets uncomfortable in the pocket and his footwork reverts.. That said he was better vs Vandy. The one Moore TD was vs a 6 man blitz. He also struggled some in the second half, albeit in some terrible self-inflicted (offensive penalties, not his) down and distances. Not sure what to think about Quinn’s Vandy game. I do know, Texas is not going to see people hang back in zone the rest of the year. The book is out. Everyone is going to come after Texas, until Texas proves they can handle the blitz
  15. The other one on the left sideline. The 2nd TD for Texas. Not even a question about that being over 10 yards
  16. That seems off. Didn’t Moore have one that was clearly longer?
  17. damn, you guys are just a fuckin ray of sunshine
  18. Does it matter if it was the worst in 4 years or the 2nd worst in 4.02 years?
  19. I am not saying PFF is 100% accurate and 230th sounds low. He has been bad the last 2 weeks. PFF gave him 6 turnover worthy plays vs Georgia, which is was the most by a single player in the last 4 years. I would not get caught up in the exact number, but it is confirmation that your eyes are not lying to you. He is really struggling.
  20. This is presented in the typical cable news fashion. Here is the truth of the situation. 1. Quinn Ewers.. The 14th ranked QB in the SEC by PFF and 230th overall in the nation. He is showing really bad pocket awareness and poor decision making, since coming back from injury. 2. Arch Manning. Higher ceiling player with limited experience, that is likely to make 1st yr QB mistakes. There is no perfect choice. If Quinn was playing well there really isnt a discussion (well, this is Surly). Picking either QB requires some faith at this time. Choice A is dont trust your lying eyes and believe that the QB you have seen since the injury will snap his fingers and become a high end QB in the short-term (vs Vandy it is possible) Choice B is into the unknown. Go with the higher ceiling player and hope his 1st year mistakes are not crippling and he is fast learner. Both choices come with obvious risks.
  21. You left Moore uncovered and drew up a defense where the NB goes from 10 yards deep at the numbers, comes to the middle of the field to cover Bond on the shallow cross, and then stays with him to the numbers. I have to assume that, because you can’t let Bond run free from where the RT is to the numbers on the left. Now have 2 wide open WRs. Not that any of that matters, because the Safety got depth and was 20 yards deep, so that was clearly not the call.
  22. You need to slow down. You are spinning so fast you are going to make yourself dizzy. There is no yellow line on the field? Come on. Did you look at the play? Who is he passing him off to? The safety is deep over the top of Helm. The corner is out by the numbers. You have LB on Bond’s drag. The other one is over the top of him, there is no chance he gets to the drag or to the slant. You started off with he was waiting to throw beyond the sticks, then there is no yellow line in the field, and now he is passing off to a defender that isn’t close to either route.. If it helps you out I went back to look at this play after hearing Babers bitch about this, just to see what he was talking about (I was at the stadium, didn’t notice).
  23. Almost nothing in here that is accurate. Now a slant can’t get 6 yards, especially one that is uncovered. He is looking to the right. You have a drag, slant, and Corner route. Literally comes off the slant to the drag and you are saying he is waiting to throw beyond the sticks by looking to hit the shortest route available. Each to their own I guess
  24. I totally get why he wants to attack with the pass, but Vandy is also 15th in the SEC in rushing average per attempt. With Texas QB situation where it is, I would like to see a much more balanced opening script. Texas ran it 6 times in their first 19 plays for 3.8 last week (I cut it off at 10-0, so normal offense). I think the run/pass script needs to get more balanced, until the QB situation ceases to be an issue
  25. or this one Its more damning given the score of the game
