Andes? Live from La Paz..... Yeah, that would be a shit show. Maybe a regional game with Argentina and Chile co-hosting, but um, they don't have shit for venues.

You mean maybe Jen isn’t telling the truth? We need to make sure those pipes are clean, to reduce disease transmission. Forget about the gutter dick that got sucked for $9 worth of crack a half hour before it went into the shiny new pipe.

Man, I gotta get a new drug....

I would love to see the IOC straight up purchase/lease a Greek island and create the ultimate Olympic venue site.  Host the Summer games there in perpetuity.  It could be used for other sport/special events but it would eliminate the host cities from spending billions on venues that are left to rot after the games are over.

Alps and Rockies for winter games.

Like the idea of a Greek isle hosting in perpetuity, and a revolving winter location (Alps, Rockies, and Andes).

    Finished it last night.

Enjoyed it enough to not overthink anything and not nitpick (see 1883 thread).

It was entertaining and I didn't think the dude was a bad actor.  His no-nonsense, matter-of-fact schtick seemed on par with his prior military background.

Loling at the casting director that placed Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.

Tommy Cruise was the casting director that made that choice. He purchased the movie rights to the series.

A-Basin's base is at almost 11k feet.  Breck is 9600.  That's why A-Basin is always the last resort in CO to close for the year.

Thanks, yeah for some reason when you google highest resort A basin doesn't come up, but I guess cause it's technically not a resort ?

I'm ashamed to say I haven't hit A basin yet.  Probably should do it in March when we're back at Breck.  They've been open into July if memory serves.

Not me, I could watch that all day. Incredible engineering and precision at such a small level.

I totally dig the engineering, detail, and imagination, but yeah, no. You can't even tell time on some of them.  Way too gimmicky for my taste.  A couple look like something you'd win at a carnival grab claw game.

I watched some of the Olympics last night and thought I had my fill, but 30 minutes later I wanted to watch some more.

I'm in till the figure skaters come out, just can't get into it, and I know how fucking hard, and dangerous that shit is.

Gimme a downhill, slalom run, Bobsled run  or even mixed curling, and I'm there.  I have a need for speed.

Everyone has the same access to vote.  Voting has never been easier.  There are weeks of early voting in Texas.  Some of the most restrictive states are northern, liberal states.

As to gerrymandering, it has happened for over 100 years.  It is why democrats had a stranglehold on the House for most of the 20th century.  It is also an issue caused by the requirement for minority majority districts.  Democrats still do it in states they control but don't like it that the GOP is now doing it now that the GOP wins statewide elections in a majority of the states.

What proof do you have Abrams really won?

The parties steal tactics from each other since forever, If they did it we'll do it.  The akuna ma-ta-ta principle applies to many around here.

  9. The Reacher books are escapist literature, not more than about ankle deep in the cerebral zone, but fun, action shit.  They remind me of the Dirk Pitt series. I always used to grab one when getting on a plane for a vacation.

If Reacher was in Vietnam, he'd be over 60.

And he for damn sure wouldn't have been a tunnel rat at that size. Know a guy who does handyman construction services, very talented guy with his hands, He was a tunnel rat in VN, and says going under houses can be an issue for him at times.

ugh.  So all the alternate shingles being offered are only rated to 130MPH winds. (GAF Armorshield II, OC Weatherguard HP, Iko Nordic and Malarkey Legacy).

@Jkwellborn or @ROFL BOX yall know someone who might have atlas stormmaster shake singles (majestic shake color) in stock?  or something else that can withstand the same wind?

ill never forgive myself if this home survived all these storms only to fail due to new lower rated shingles on the addition. lol

or can we just survive a month or so with the artificial felt?

I prefer natural, baby, seal fur, but that's just me. Not into the artificial thing.

LAst time I skied both WP and A-Basin was on the same trip in early May 2019... it was amazing.  I'd take my chances.

I saw a bunch of triple blacks on that trail map but now I see there is a regular black bowl.

So many resorts, so little time.

Breck is the highest resort in the lower 48 so that might be an option.  Doesn't guarantee snow, but you have a better shot at colder temps keeping snow on the hill a little longer.  We'll be skiing from Maine down thru Vt. first 10 days of April.

Sigh.  I know there has been a discussion here elsewhere.  While east of student loan dollars is part of the reason for rising college costs, it is not the sole driver.

Further, the GQP has been playing politics for years.  About time for the other side to fight back.

I find it amusing that the board right wing contingent screams "playing politics" when some of us suggest that you get the GQP on record for voting against their constituents.  However, they are totally cool to ram through a completely unqualified supreme court justice mere weeks before an election during a pandemic when people had already started voting.  What a bunch of whiny hypocrites you all are.

Stay on point here.....You can yell GOP all you want. Your concept is still politics, does little to help the problem, and does exactly what you claim the GOP does. I'm a strong an advocate for a better education system, and creating opportunities for people to get a quality education, and that includes a robust skilled trades apprentice program which we need much more than college tuition grants.

EDIT: Yes, a highly articulate and intelligent response . You really hate it when people put points right back in your face, and you have no where to go.  You're cool with playing politics when it suits your needs, or it's from your team, based on your OP.

Have a nice day now ma'am.

I feel like one measly rep isn’t enough here to show my appreciation for Shady, 956 and a few others who legit rain down nuanced, local and applicable knowledge on the rest of us here.  This is fascinating stuff and I hugely appreciate the time you guys take to write article-quality analysis, careful to separate what you know as fact from your personal anecdotes.

On a side note it also helps me explain why this is my ‘home’ on the Internet despite me being a Poke, and needle my wife who thinks it’s all Dickbutt and football.  InstaFaceTok has nothing on this place.

    What he said.

And don't let her think anything else.

I think they should try and pass free community college on its own.  Community colleges are supported in a large part by property tax, like public schools.  In fact, the are, in large part, an extension of the public school system and an excellent bridge between high school and college for a lot of folks (or they should be).  Fuck it, make the GQP come out squarely against community college and education.  Make them point blank take the stance that they do not want to help people gain skills to be successful.

The current high cost of college has been fueled in large part by the proliferation of college loans, and making it free for everyone will only give colleges an excuse to raise tuition fees again. Everyone should not go to college for free,  nor is everyone equipped for college. That's just a simple fact.

Playing the game you're advocating is politics pure, and simple, and doesn't do anything to actually address the root cause of the high cost of college, and in fact may only contribute to it.

I assume that the garage is on slab. Wouldn't you have issues at the junction between the garage and the house because they would move differently in the soil.

A garage slab will be on grade, but the actual garage CMU foundation walls will be built atop a 20" x 12" continuous footing (w/(2) cont. #4 bars for tensile strength) at the same depth as the house foundation footing.  The slab is poured after the CMU foundation walls of the garage are built, and then there's an expansion joint between the edge of the slab, and the foundation wall so they can move independently of each other.  The slab area should be prepped with a min. of 4" of properly compacted, porous gravel so settlement shouldn't be an issue.

I am doing a conditioned crawl space and best practices say to install a sump pump. But, if waterproofing is required on the walls and floor and closed cell foam installation is installed and a dehumidifier is used, where the fuck would the water come from?  The house isn't in a flood zone: It is on the plateau of a hill at 2300ft. And everything should be set up where water drains away from the house.

Typically unless the outside grade is higher then the inside grade there should be no need for a sump pump.  Water could be coming under the footings,  but that would indicate a variable/seasonal watertable. I've never specified a sump pump unless it's a basement or excavated crawl space.  I'd be asking around with local contractors to see what they say.
