  1. The chance of this really being “dangerous” is pretty low. This is great news honestly. Right now we have essentially two sides of mass/social media. Establishment side and the Fox News side. I think a potential 3rd approach with a different filter that entirely satisfies neither side is a good thing. I doubt he’ll make massive waves because he doesn’t want to be bogged down in Congress and regulations. He’s shown he can toe the line to avoid scrutiny when he needs to. See his coziness with China.
  2. I think he was set up. This is very plausible imo. Jack gets frustrated with direction of Twitter. Restricted by board and culture wars in general as public company. Decides to quit. Still has ceo post at Square/Block. He’s been friendly with Elon for a while and appears to be aligned with him on a lot of social issues…one thing leads to another and boom. The timing of the whole thing coming together is quite suspect. Especially when you consider Jack’s rather blunt comments about Twitter since this bid became public.
  3. Might be the most pessimistic, Debbie downer post in the history of this site.

  5. Twitter has a pretty massive moat in its lane of news dissemination/instant reaction punditry. That’s not going anywhere, and it’s not all political facing. There’s sports, financial news, crypto. I log on for those 3 things as much as anything. I think it’s a pretty clear path to opening up the algorithm to eliminate opaque shadow banning of some and prioritizing of others. And clean up the bots. As for how far speech will be allowed to go, he said recently he thinks terms should mimic the laws regulating free speech in the country. Does he know all that entails, probably not. Who gets allowed back in is another question. Dems here should pray to whoever they like and hope that Trump is let back on. It’s their best chance to deflect from current status of the country and minimize midterm losses. I also think it’s pretty likely that Twitter offices in some form move to Texas. That is awesome obviously for us. Gavin Newsome and California Dems have been such a gift to our state. They made it unbearable to live and work in such a beautiful state as California. Unbelievable. We’ll look back in 10-20 years and be amazed at what a windfall they gave us by pushing so much industry away. Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter just from the Elon sphere. Add all the other business not linked to Elon.
  6. He’s been pretty clear he thinks there’s too much censorship on Twitter. Or the cynic would say he thinks there’s the wrong kind of censorship.
  7. I think a certain subset of people like the idea of a billionaire that’s bucking conventional wisdom. They will get burned at times because they’ll disagree strongly with something he says/pushes though. It’s possible, but at this point Tesla is too big to fail in that the US gov/DoD needs its work on EVs and AI etc to continue. It’s the tech equivalent of a systemically important institution.
  8. I guess it’s time for some people to build their own social media giant. Just kidding, Social media regulation incoming.
  9. Herewego.gif This is a pretty landmark deal. I think anybody that claims to know what happens now with ElonTwitter is kidding themselves, but it would appear the rules of public discourse are going to change. Whatever happens he’s clearly one of the most influential figures of this century.
  10. This is reminiscent of March 2020 here. Limit down day. The question is how long does Xi keep this up. There’s a lot of chatter about effects of lockdowns in China. Hard to verify though. Xi up for third term this year. I was under the impression that he had so consolidated power that it was fait accompli. I’ve been trying to catch up on China background recently. I’m interested to hear other takes on China. A change in power there would be huge obviously, but I’m not sure how much it would change US-China relations. One thing to look for would be if China gets destabilized by food shortages or inflation, then I think the odds of aggression towards Taiwan go up significantly. Could be used as a way to distract and rally support for government in place.
  11. Hope CR had their dvrs set. 60 minutes with some much needed PR for the bureau. 🙏🏻
  12. So you would estimate that 20% of adults are somewhere in the lgbt spectrum if they could really declare their true desires? I’m just surprised by that number. It’s quite a triumph that our culture is so open that some many people would openly identify as such.
  13. I hadn’t thought of the population control angle, but that would be effective long term if that were a concern to some. I don’t think anything is wrong with it necessarily, I was just curious TBabe’s thoughts on the rapid rise given her view that none of these decisions are a conscious choice.
  14. It was the bisexual category. 57% of lgbt community identify as B
  15. Assuming these numbers are reasonably close to true for the whole population what do you make of them? Why such a rapid change recently? Has there always been that large of a percentage of the population suppressing their natural desires? That’s a higher percentage than I would’ve ever thought. We’ve just become so free now that everyone can be themselves I guess.
  16. That’s weird. Any clarification since?
