  1. 13 arrested, 12 informants involved. Again, I’m playing catch up here, but this is pretty crazy. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/kenbensinger/michigan-kidnapping-gretchen-whitmer-fbi-informant “The government has documented at least 12 confidential informants who assisted the sprawling investigation. The trove of evidence they helped gather provides an unprecedented view into American extremism, laying out in often stunning detail the ways that anti-government groups network with each other and, in some cases, discuss violent actions. An examination of the case by BuzzFeed News also reveals that some of those informants, acting under the direction of the FBI, played a far larger role than has previously been reported. Working in secret, they did more than just passively observe and report on the actions of the suspects. Instead, they had a hand in nearly every aspect of the alleged plot, starting with its inception. The extent of their involvement raises questions as to whether there would have even been a conspiracy without them. A longtime government informant from Wisconsin, for example, helped organize a series of meetings around the country where many of the alleged plotters first met one another and the earliest notions of a plan took root, some of those people say. The Wisconsin informant even paid for some hotel rooms and food as an incentive to get people to come.”
  2. Which one? CR? No thanks. This thread is about global unrest generally and I anticipate it veering around as issues arise. Food shortages went to China which then went into their Covid zero policy. If that’s upsetting to you perhaps don’t click on this thread. Or I guess you could report it. If it’s not heavily CR I don’t see the problem. I wasn’t aware that threads on Surly had to stay exactly on topic. Go outside and get some fresh air. Enjoy your weekend, PW.
  3. all that hate’s gonna burn her up. She claimed I was on ignore before. Guess not any longer. Quite a thread here. More Chinese Covid craziness. This seems legit.
  4. From the replies there. Creepy
  5. The usual caveats about the veracity of Twitter posts apply here, but it would appear it’s not going too well.
  6. You have the wrong guy. I’m generally not a fan of the police, especially the Feds.
  7. I guess there were 12 magats on this one? I have not followed this at all. I actually assumed the people blaming the fbi were full of shit. I guess they weren’t. Just another sign of institutional trust falling apart. FBI is not trusted. The head of the Detroit office that oversaw this operation got promoted to chief of DC office and is now in charge of the 1/06 investigation.
  8. Pretty good summary here. “Whether they crossed the sharply defined line into entrapment is a matter of legal definitions. But the tactics employed by the FBI to develop its case against the defendants — despite the Justice Department’s best efforts to keep those tactics secret — conform to a growing popular conception of government overreach. Manipulating people into committing crimes is “unacceptable in America,” Blanchard said in closing arguments carefully calibrated to press that hot button. “That’s not how it works. We don’t make terrorists so we can arrest them.” Blanchard was mistaken. Using swarms of informants to push suspected radicals toward violence is in fact exactly how it works: The FBI has been doing it for at least half a century, from the Black Panthers in the 1970s to Muslim groups in the wake of 9/11. But because the targets in this case were conservative white men, those tactics touched a nerve with a swath of the population that had never seriously considered the issue before.”
  9. If you go to a comedy club anywhere and you’re sitting in the front row you have to be prepared for jokes. Just how it is. Works the same at the Oscar’s. Anyway, not sure how old this video is, but oooof. It’s amazing that someone this rich and powerful could be under one person’s thumb so badly.
  10. It said their wheat stockpiles could meet demand for 18 months with no new input.
  11. 1- In the same way that globalization was deflationary, de-globalization will be inflationary so the amount that interest rate hikes will help over time is tbd. 2- Nope. See other posters here blaming most of the inflation on Covid supply chain/Ukraine. Minimal acknowledgment of monetary expansion’s role. Also, best to ignore its role, because we are stuck with mmt. Actually will accelerate more going forward. As I laid out in other posts, Fed is going to have to step in and monetize more debt in the future. 3- not politically feasible. Might be too late anyway. The next 5-10 years a lot is going to happen.
  12. They’ve been planning ahead.
  13. Mildly cloaky but that’s ok. Monetary expansion and supply chain disruption primed the pump. Geopolitical forces accelerating things now. But you’re right now that central banks can’t print oil or food stuffs. We’re in a bad spot globally.
  14. The next government imposed emergencies will be climate related. Here’s the first “soft lockdown” I’ve seen.
  15. Instead of posting these videos in the 6thSJ inflation thread, I might as well start a thread here. Rising wheat prices led to unrest in 2010 and started the Arab Spring. This time there’s multiple commodities with prices going parabolic all over the globe. It’s just getting started, but unfortunately I think the outcome will be unrest on every continent. Hope I’m wrong. No CR discussion just tracking these events. Peru The curfew was disregarded and subsequently rescinded. Greece Translation for those that don’t tweet “24-hour general strike and demonstrations in Greece against soaring prices and low wages. Public services and maritime, rail and urban transport are paralyzed in the country. Inflation reached 7.2% in Greece, a record level for 25 years.”
  16. Thanks for sharing. Anyway, coming to a country near you. Hold on to your butts
  17. Tbh they were kind of meh for me. A lot of big plays using his straight line speed. DBs that can’t keep up with him playing press coverage and giving him free releases to the outside. Didn’t get to see a lot of how he moves out of breaks or his YAC ability in the open field. All that said, I’m sure he’s a badass and I’m just an idiot that watched 3 minutes of film on the internets.
  18. You know what would limit profits? Price controls. We should look into that.
  19. It doesn’t matter if he wants to. He can’t. I’m sure they do. Elon is already making waves though. I know this seems like a trivial detail to a non user, but it’s been hotly debated on Twitter for a long time. Here’s Elon a couple weeks ago. He’s not becoming the largest shareholder and joining the board to add an edit button. But back to the point of this thread, these kind of actions dictated by oligarchs or other orgs are not possible with bitcoin like potentially with other chains.
  20. Change the code is referencing a recent ad push by some bitcoin haters to “change the code” for environmental reasons and go away from Proof of Work. That’s not how it works though. But Elon can buy enough Twitter stock that material changes will be made pretty quickly. The same thing would be possible in Proof of Stake crypto networks.
  21. Proof of Work vs Proof of Stake It’s pretty obvious why a lot of big banks and govts will try to push proof of Stake. It’s not because of the environment.
