  1. I have seriously considered dropping homeowners. My house was built in the 50s. Most of the value is the dirt it sits on. If I sold it, it's probably a tear down. I don't have a mortgage so insurance is not required. If it burned down, I could just clear the lot and either rebuild something a lot better than what I have (getting a mortgage) or sell lot and move. What I will probably do is just get the highest deductible they will allow.
  2. People suing their way to a new roof every time there is a little hail gets expensive.
  3. Games was tied. If Sampson missed that shot, game 5 goes to OT. Houston likely wins either in OT, or in game 6 or 7. I personally feel the NBA was superior in the Magic/Bird through the Jordan era.
  4. Boston almost assuredly still wins, but I would have loved to see that Houston-Boston series with John Lucas playing. He was really, really good at PG and his loss due to coke hurt the team. They had to move Robert Reid to PG. He did a nice job. But he was out of position. 1986 Rockets were very deep. Olajuwon, Sampson, Lucas, Lew Lloyd, Rodney McRay, Bobby Joe Reid, Wiggins. I think with Lucas playing that Boston wins in 7 instead of 6. Then you have the what if on Rockets versus Lakers for the back half of the 80s had Sampson stayed healthy and Lucas, Lloyd, and Wiggins avoided cocaine.
  5. That is the way I go when I have driven from Houston. Abilene, Lubbock, Clovis (better stop at the Clovis Pilot because it's the only decent place between Lubbock and Santa Fe), Clines Corner, Santa Rosa, Santa Fe.
  6. I have spent a lot of time in Santa Fe. A close family member (uncle) has lived in Las Campanas for 10+ years (and it was his second home the previous ten years). I like it. But it is not nearly as pretty as other mountain regions. The skiing is not great and is often a pain in the ass to get to (you get behind one driver with the wrong vehicle or who drives slow it might take you two hours to get up the ski hill in bad weather). And the town shuts down really early, which if you are moving for retirement might not matter.
  7. Very true. In the words of August McCrae: "Life in San Francisco, you see, is still just life."
  8. I would add how long it takes and how expensive it is to build any sort of infrastructure these days. And the cost of construction period.
  9. You need less indoor space when the weather outside is so nice. No need to be inside when it's 70 with no humidity.
  10. You don't like to ski? I love both winters and summers in mountains. The muddy part of late spring is when you want to bail. I agree with you about costs. Most of the shit I like to do in the mountains does not cost much. Fishing, hiking, skiing (season pass is cheap per day if you ski a lot), public hunting, rafting. I often buy second hand gear that is gently used (Replay Sports in Aspen is a treasure -- billionaires around there get rid of good shit cheap). And I have all the hunting stuff I need for a lifetime. We bought a place in Whitefish. I am moving there when my kids finish school in a few years. Will spend time back home in Texas during the fall, mainly. Probably just stay at the ranch and won't keep a place in the city. As much as you guys dislike the state politics in Texas, I feel the same about blue big city politics anywhere. When a friend of ours was gunned down at McDonalds last month by some asshole just released on bail for aggravated assault, that did it for me. Harris County is deteriorating, IMO. I have lived here all my life outside of college and law school. The shit I see day after day around my "nice" neighborhood disgusts me. It is going to get worse, not better.
  11. I am sorry this is happening to you.
  12. We went to the Ipic near our home in Houston a couple months ago to see Iron Claw. First time in a theater since Top Gun sequel. It was run down inside. The chair I sat in had duct tape covering a hole. Theater was not clean. Pretty obvious it must be struggling.
  13. I think you left something out. How the Southeasterners told you their undying dream was for their offspring to attend A&M.
  14. McNiece was one of my very close friend's great uncle (his grandmother was one of McNiece's ten siblings). Dude was a badass. Made 4 combat jumps per my buddy.
  15. I like getting pizza at Vendetta's at Vail. We used to apres at Pepi's. Rod Powell was entertaining as the acoustic singer -- he could play just about any song you could name. He died of Covid. Had a lot of good times at Pepi's
  16. I do not hate any team. I will miss playing Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and maybe even Texas Tech (despite their fans). But us getting our three top rivals in conference plus games against a lot of other really good programs in the SEC is a huge win.
  17. “Vail? Nah, it looks like the guy who designed Wendy's went nuts in this place.”
  18. Your point about prisons and safety is well taken. They should be safe and not run by violent criminal gangs or have routine sexual assaults.
  19. Sounds like you prepaid.
  20. For how long?
  21. A buddy of mine has a cabin on land cut. We do a duck and fishing cast and blast in November. It is heaven. Usually weather is perfect. I never see anyone back there.
  22. That 2012 A&M team could not defend the spread offense. Their defense was protected by playing in the SEC as it was largely plodding pro style offenses. They gave up 57 points to La Tech. VY's team would have scored every time it got the ball.
