I thought he put on a great show. I was expeting bluegrass, but I wasn't really expecing psychedelic bluegrass and we got both. I didn't really know what to expect. I'd seen a few YouTube vids and some friends I respect had raved about him, but I wasn't so sure about it. I went on a lark as friend had tickets but couldn't go. I'm really glad I did.
Next time I would show up earlier. I didn't appreciate that apparently he has a Dead like following. Rather, a lot of Dead fans follow him. There were a ton there in typical Dead regalia. There were also a lot of folks in parking lot selling their wares. I wasn't able to partake as I couldn't leave work early. Then there were a bunch of straight up FW rednecks there. Then there were just the regular work a day folks like me. All of this is a way to say, the show was as much of a scene as Billy, which seemed really cool to me. It reminded me of all the stories we've read/heard about Willie's early days when the rednecks and hippies would just hang out and groove on the good music.
It was also my first time at Dickies arena. I've shied away from arena shows of late. But I'd have to say as far as arenas go, it was really good. The sound was on point (at least from about mid floor, where I was). It's a beautiful, new facility. LIke a scaled down AAC.
