  1. So I just read a book Fever in the Heartland, and never realized that the Fighting Irish moniker came from the students battling the Klan in Indiana.

    Pretty cool.

  2. I'll drop this here, although Lake Highlands isn't really East Dallas.

Goldie's, now where RM Bistro was, is very solid.  Great bar and small but well done menu.

Ambiance is really nice.  Energetic front room and they've really turned the old RM Bistro patio into a nice space.

Everything a few dollars more than you'd expect to pay in Lake Highlands, but still worth it.

  3. Anatomy of a Fall (2023)

I tend to apologize for the French, but this was French in all the wrong ways.

Although it did make me interested to know if the French judicial system was as portrayed.  That was some fucked up, stream of concioiusness, whatever you want to come into evidence shit.

  4. Saw it yesterday.  Disappointed.  The closing credits, which had Fury Road scenes, reminded me of how I thought Fury Road was robbed of the Best Picture.

I thought the story line on this didn't add to the admittedly fine and exciting special effects.  But holy fuck, you realize how much star power Charlize (sp) and Tom have.  They added so much to every scene, and these stars did not.  Tom is just fucking cool as hell and Charlize is simply captivating in every scene she's ever been in.

Further, the effects on Fury Road felt pretty novel.  This one maintained the quality and had some very cool stuff but not as surprisingly fun as Fury Road.

ATJ was good.  The little kid who played the young F. was more interesting, and when she was grewed up, the flick lost some momentum as well.

Worth watching.  WAY too long.  Fury Road>Road Warrior>Mad Max>Furiosa>What's Love Got to Do With It Mate?

  6. Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud and the Last Trial of Harper Lee  by Caey Cep (2019) (Audio)

I was really impressed with this book.  It goes off in different directions and is sort of like four different long New Yorker articles all mashed together.  But the writing is so swift and spare that the story just moves along.  It's just a good read/listen.

The idea of her publishers pushing for To Kill a Mockingbird over her finishing Go Set a Watchman - set years after To Kill a Mockingbird with an older and more problematic Atticus is something I never knew of but is a perfect reflection of the race politics of our own time.

  7. Saw him a couple of times riding a bike (looked very wobbley) near the Stanford Law School long, long ago.  I always appreciated his strangeness and he could crack me up sometimes.
