  1. Oh I see someone already explained it all up above.  There was still talk of the Griffins when I got there.  Or Griffons.  No one really knew what that was about.  And I remember "Steaming Manhole Covers", not "Steaming Manholes" -- although the latter would have been a much stronger statement.

  2. The Cardinal is the color.  Basically Stanford Cardinal Red.   The Tree is technically the mascot of the band.   When we lost the Indian mascot there was some vote and Robber Barons was allegedly the new favorite.  When I got there the joke was that most students wanted the new mascot to be Steaming Manhole Covers.  (Based on steaming manhole covers around campus).   But nobody really gives a shit and I haven't bothered to look any of this up   Band members now and again dress up as Catholic Cardinals.

I've always liked the color, and I've always liked the S with the tree on it, and I think our football and baseball uniforms are generally pretty cool.  Although I've always wished they tried to do some play on the St. Louis Cardinal-on-the-bat logo.

Plus, try to get a permit to update a commode in the Bay Area.  Five year minimum wait.

  4. What Price Glory (1952)

John Ford's remake is weird but I liked it.  Sort of like if he had made one of his cavalry flicks, but with Cagney, as a musical, but then he cut all the dance numbers.  Or if the whole movie was the Fess Parker wedding scene from the Searchers.

But it's Ford so it's worth it.  Bonus was spotting the "Sammy Davis Baker Junior" grandpa from 16 candles.

  5. The Quiet Girl (2022)

Sad but pretty and very good Irish flick. It took me a while to realize the pretty little Irish actress was doing her best Ethan Hawke Dead Poet's rendition.  Plot is about two sentences long but very effective.
