I'm afraid we're heading for a 7, 8, or 9 seed and a very losable first round game.

Well, losing a losable game in the first round is a step up from losing a winnable game in the first round, so I am happy for the improvement.

  2. Last Picture Show (1971)

Goddamn this movie.  I had forgotten that Randy Quaid was in it.  And that the "slow" kid was Tim Bottom's brother Sam, the surfer in Apocalyse Now.  And the great and always creeper Clu Gulager.  And how Ellen Burstyn was throwing down a vibe. And Ben Fucking Johnson - I never realized what a stud this guy was (need to find a biography of the guy.)

I grew up being forced to go to Bracketville now and again in my youth, and while Bracketville is no Archer City, some of those slamming screen doors sure were evocative of my youth -- if any of you spent time anywhere west of I35 growing up, I challenge you  to watch this flick when you are an old dude like me and not be moved.

Sam the Lion's speech  at the pond/tank is such a beautiful rif on the beauty/tragedy of life - all there in about 30 seconds.

    If she was here,
I'd probably be just as crazy now...
...as I was then in about five minutes.

    Ain't that ridiculous?

    No, it ain't really.

Being crazy about a woman like her is always the right thing to do.
Being a decrepit old bag of bones, that's what's ridiculous.

    Getting old.

So this is basically the same shit that happened in Portland, except less voluntarily from the actual citizens of Ottawa where these truckers landed. But a complete shut down of commerce and road traffic, disruption of some businesses, and the right is universally in favor of it while they were screaming about it when it happened in Portland as a political protest that was peaceful. I'm shocked at the cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy, completely unexpected.

I'm not an expert on traffic logistics or urban planning, but as stated above, I don't think they appear to be "basically the same shit".  The Canada actions created a clear slowdown in intercountry commerce which essentially shut down some automakers processes for a few days.

I think it's important to understand the similarities, but it's more important to understand why this may have evoked a different political response.

  4. Raya and the Last Dragon (2021).

I don't follow animation that closely, but this used what appeared to be the standard formula, but had some really nice animation.  Had some set pieces that were obviously rifs on some other action movies, and that was kind of cool. (Grandkid is turning one, so I need to keep up with this so I can chose flicks to take him to that I enjoy.)

I occasionally workout but taken up a lot more hiking, to accelerate the heart rate.

I've decided that what I used to call hiking is actually just walking where there are trees.  My heart rate is at it's lowest when I'm hiking walking.

Sullivan's Travels? With Joel McCrae and the LOVELY Veronica Lake

Or was the blonde Jean Arthur? A Foreign Affair?

Certain it's William Holden and a blond, and it was a pretty light comedy if I remember - at most maybe some bittersweet romantic entanglements.  I'll do some research and watch some trailers.

Terrific movie. Although the lines about how hard it is to buy Senators or Representatives in D.C., in today's world were laughable.

Okay, I might need your help on this, I am looking for Bill Holden movie where he is dating a different blond. I remember really liking it, but can't remember the plot or the actress - just that it was an enjoyable comedy with Bill Holden and a blond.  I'm not sure if Holden was in the military or not.  Or maybe it wasn't bill holden.

  8. I basically can walk to that Audelia/Walnut Hill intersection with RM Bistro, Shady's, Resident, Cedar & Vine.  (I've still got a pretty big chip on my shoulder about Lake Highlands dining, and I still think we have a ways to go.  Resident is the only one I'm really proud of.  I think RM Bistro is consistent, but I do think it benefits from a bit of lowered expectations charm.  Cedar and Vine has a nice brunch but it's been a tad below solid during the pandemic. Vector and Taco Joint - okay, if that's what you're in the mood for.  That new Chinese place has the most Lake Highlandsy menu for a chinese place I've ever seen.

Shady's is a good take out place but just too many fucking kids there to be a pleasant in-house experience.

I had a great bubble tea at that tea place on the east side over by the subway and ice cream place.  I didn't realize how bad bubble tea is for you so will probably go back to see if they have anything healthy - that seems like such a non-Lake Highlands idea that I feel like I have to give them some $$$ just for having the cajones.

  9. Went to Bilad Bakery in Richardson (Centennial and Greenville) based on this list.  Got the Beef Shawarma sandwich (on Iraqi Bread) (samoon?).  Asked for spicy.  I definitely will be back.  Brought a bag of the bread, threw it in the freezer and bake it back up with hummus/cheese/deli.

The hostess was really friendly and hopefully she'll be there when I go back to give me some suggestions on the menu.  Certainly will try the chicken shawarma next and then after that who knows.

A bit out of my way now that I work from home but not too far out of the way.

The Untouchables. Been ages since I’d seen it, and I enjoyed the rewatch. Could have done with more of DeNiro as Capone, and I fucking love the absurdity of Sean Connery as a Chitown beat cop that just punches people in the face.

You kids dig comic book movies.   Anyone whose actions are controlled, to some degree, by gravity, I find very credible.

I saw a bit of Metropolitan. I tried twice but, couldn't watch the whole thing. I thought it was dreadful. I think what I saw was worse that Last Days of Disco.

Yep, if you don't buy into the stylized, "untrue" dialogue, it's all over for any of these movies.  I kinda liked the "real" and goofy motivations of the young characters, once you got past all the weird mannerisms, but I guess I had a high tolerance for suffering through the characters' words and actions.

The last scene, credits of Last Days of Disco encapsulates all of this.  It is dreadful, but given all the shit you've just watched, and what disco means to some people, it's a perfect ending IF you've bought into the whole premise. (Very well could be an age thing too, because I've always thought disco was fucking awesome.)

The third act is just one inversion after another: bad guy gets away, wife gets killed, hero leaves wife out of greed, sheriff figure doesn't catch bad guy.

Plus two instances of boot product placement.
