  1. I feel like Blue Sky is that. It's just going to take some time to hit its stride.
  2. The first game at Texas Memorial Stadium was played exactly 100 years ago today. The Austin Stateman's account of the game is pretty interesting. I truncated it in my tweet because I didn't want to post the racist next sentence, which would have resulted in a whole bunch of comments/fighting/controversy that I don't have time to babysit this afternoon. But here it is ... "Baylor and Bridges yesterday achieved their greatest triumph. Texas was beaten, decisively, overwhelmingly, unquestionably licked. And the little mentor of the Bruins grinned happily as he rubbed his hands over the head of the negro "good luck mascot" who sat next him, mumbling all the while queer incantations, while his powerful machine of the gridiron, hitting smoothly on all eleven "cylinders," ploughed through the Texas line. This negro is always at Bridges' side during the progress of an important game and right vigorously was his head massaged yesterday." Seriously ... WTF? This was just 100 years ago! If you'd like to read the entire account of the game, it's here: https://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth1435233/m1/1/zoom/?q=%20date:1923-1925%20stadum%20university%20texas%20baylor&resolution=1.5&lat=2213.4285354614253&lon=2791.8214416503897 Please note that, if the text is too small, you can use the "zoom" button. Also note that the account of the game continues on page 8 of the newspaper. Interesting that one of the Texas players was named Shearer. I wonder if he was any relation to Brad Shearer.
  3. Maudies Josie Enchiladas are a thing of beauty and a joy forever.
  4. I've lost almost 500 followers on X since the election. On the other hand, I've gained about 140 on Threads and 45-50 on Blue Sky, so it's not a total loss. Our social media will become even more bifurcated, I'm thinking. Threads is gaining a huge number of new followers every day. Zuckerburg indicated roughly one million per day in his conference call. Now up to 275 million. I wish it would gain some of X's functionality.
  5. I made it through three episodes of Season 2. It's the dumbest, silliest, most contrived thing I've seen in quite a while. I'm out.
  6. What if there is no good system for selecting leaders? What if the problems inflicted on a planet with 8 billion people are so severe that no leader can save us from them?
  7. Temple did under Bob McQueen, at least down to the junior high level. All three junior highs in town ran the Temple High School offense.
  8. Wouldn't she be unrecognizable if she died in a ICE vehicle explosion, too?
  9. The last Oat Willies closing after 56 years. https://www.statesman.com/story/business/2024/10/24/iconic-austin-head-shop-oat-willies-calls-it-quits-after-36-years-closeout-deals/75826097007/
  10. Major Applewhite once said to me "dumbass fans only see the play that was run, not the play that was called." That always stuck with me. What he meant is that they call a play in the huddle but a million things happen during the play that keep the play from going off as it was designed to, then fans complain with the benefit of hindsight, instant replay etc ...
  11. I'm no lawyer, but wouldn't a good lawyer have advised him not to comment?
  12. Thank you for saying this more eloquently than I can. My dad says "the laws of economics can't be denied." I always say "the laws of economics are only laws because we all agree that they're laws."
