  1. Not to be that guy but Halsey did have orders that allowed him to act that way. A lot blame to go around - King for allowing split commands where Halsey and Kincaid each thought the other had Leyte, Nimitz for not specifically telling Halsey in his orders that he was to protect the landings and Halsey for ignoring his junior admirals who tried to tell him (this part is interesting because some historians have said that Halsey's staff was responsible and had not shown him much of the information that was received that indicated wild goose chase) it was a wild goose chase. Again, however, his orders said if the main Japanese fleet shows up than it is the target. Also as mentioned, Last Stand is outstanding.
  2. Skiied at Banff in early 90's and you are correct. It was very cold.... Also for some reason I remember that almost every ski run seemed to end a couple hundred yards below the next lift. They seemed to enjoy making you push your way uphill to get on the chair
  3. Not quite as bad as the mess that the Colts tried against the Patriots a few years ago but you have to wonder how much they practiced this - like a shot put to the Auburn player. By someone who isn't a shotputter...
  4. Even with the carriers avoiding Pearl Harbor there were several estimates of how long the war would last - made by leaders of the military. In 1942 a lot of them said the war would last until 1949 or so. The Europe first decision meant almost no resources for the Pacific in 1942. Adm King stuck his neck out at one of the Allied high command meeting and got a guarantee of something like 20% of the war material and men committed to the Pacific - which was a huge increase. It took the Army until 1944 to realize that there was other places to fight except Europe and they discovered that the Navy had almost won the war by then. You would think the US would have wanted to hit back against the country that pulled them into the war but there were a huge difference in bringing the war to the Pacific vs Europe. For Europe you staged in England and jumped across the channel to fight. For the Pacific you had to bring everything with you (thousands of miles) and then do it again and again. The logistics of the Pacific war were totally unknown until it started. One of the forgotten heroes of the Pacific was Adm Calhoun who headed the logistics and supply - basically he was responsible for getting everything from men and material to a battle. jh
  5. Friend of mine in high school had very close to that. More candy apple red with white interior. Awesome 400 cubic inches for the win
  6. What were you thinking could be applied to Japan also. After the war the US interviewed the Japanese Army and Navy commanders and discovered that Japan really did not have much of an end game after Pearl Harbor. They had the huge misconception that the US would just sign some sort of peace treaty. If you are going to start a war you better have figured out what to do after the first shot.
  7. For those that are down on Ambrose - he read the manuscript in the 90's and said this absolutely needs to be published and then set that up.
  8. There are a lot of examples of soldiers doing stuff like that. In another Ambrose book he describes a soldier that basically took out something like 8-10 houses with Germans overlooking one of the beaches. He was asked why and said he couldn;t explain it. He would charge the house and kick in the door and use either grenades or his machine gun to kill the Germans and then went on to the next house - one after another
  9. If I remember my history from other sources - Webster didn;t jump with Easy on D-Day. I think he was assigned to headquarters until he transferred to Easy before getting hit.
  10. About 800 in 2015. As far as requiring a dial that is usually not correct. I have a semi vintage Sub (25 years old) with the older tritium dial and hands and they honored the do not replace. My understanding is they may refuse to service if the older dial could cause issues - ie if it is flaking particles off from the old paint they will not put it back on. I chose them because mine had totally froze up and I wanted it back to original specs
  11. navigation on this link is hard to follow but a ton of info on the soldiers https://wikiofbrothers.fandom.com/wiki/Easy_Company
  12. Depends on definition of larger. However the landing on Saipan was about 2-3 weeks after D-Day. Off the top of my head it probably was smaller in terms of men landing but much larger in terms of ships and men required. It is very interesting to note that the US was able to support two major invasions on opposite sides of the world in same month
  13. When my Sub needed work I just drove up to the Rolex Center in Dallas for a complete rebuild.
  14. especially clones of the wrong Eleanor... Not to be "that guy" but the real Eleanor is a 71 fastback from the original movie.
  15. Just put a baseball card in the spokes - old school sound
  16. TriStone - that picture is a little ways past the line. You might consider an edit.
  17. Not sure I don't agree with you but, again, the wild card which isn't on the chart is the penalty which moved kickoff back to 20. I think (key word - not putting money on it) that they didn;t want a returned 2 point conversion and then a short field for a fg. Or as I said above - they had no clue.
  18. only reason I can think is long odds. Up by 5 but if the other team intercepts and runs it back its a 2 point play and up by 3 and kickoff from 20 so they have a chance to get into FG range. Or the coaching staff can't figure it out very well
  19. Kinda like classic cars. I would love to find a restored to "like it left factory" Aristocraft 19. We had one growing up an loved it. basically a small shop in georgia did a fiberglass version of the wooden Chris Craft ski boat and added a removable hard top. We took ours everywhere to scuba dive - like 20 miles out in the gulf or Atlantic Ocean. I actually found 4 or 5 of them around the Austin area but they were not in great shape
  20. I was at that game and darn near died from the heat.
  21. This..... It's the same as dealing with upper management that wants to "add value" to a situation. Not going to turn out well and they are gone when it implodes
  22. I did 30 years with IBM. You would not believe the number of rules and guidelines I had to follow in terms of using that logo. And since I was customer facing I dealt with it for years. In addition, at one point, we were required to proof check all our presentations for trademark and registered trademark designations. My main presentation was over 1000 (yep 1000 charts) since I used hotlinks to jump around. Customers never saw but 50-70 charts but I had a lot of them to check
  23. Dang - figured the offseason was over.. I didn't mind it until i saw the view on the helmet. Warming up the torch and looking for a pitchfork
  24. Burger King was my high school summer job so I still like them. Plus here in North Alabama I get tons of coupons for buy one get one free so it's also a price performer. No idea on nuggets but I still like the Whopper.
  25. I had a lot of WW2 planes and ships but also had a balsa wood biplane that took a huge amount of time to build. It had some sort of paper that covered it and you had to cut and paste every bit of it. probably took 2-3 weekends to do the whole plane and house smelled like glue
