A couple of years I learned one of the automotive WTH's. The Amphicar - which was an pretty cool project - make a car that runs on land and on water. Guess who they chose for electronics - yep Lucas. Nothing wrong with electricity and water.. Also heard LBJ had one on his ranch and would scare by flying down a hill toward a lake yelling No Brakes and then plow into the water.
In college my MGA with Lucas decided it was time to try and light the car on fire at lunch. Arced the starter switch which was a big box in engine compartment. The equivalent of arc welding until the battery ran down. Melted part of wiring harness - had to patch it and crank start the car until a new switch arrived.
I'll go retro - proud to have my 40 year old Craftsman sockets and wrenches. Still trying to recover my Dad's 60 year old stuff from brothers garage. No cheap stuff here
Actually I guess I should pos rep to balance it out. Not to threadjack but I have run into the same body shape/type wearing Alabama gear who felt compelled to comment to me.
Used one to ship the MGA to Michigan. A few thoughts
1. Covered is much better than non
2. Drivers were fine - scheduler not so much. I know they have to make a profit but every time they confirmed a pickup or dropoff time then the scheduler found another job "nearby" and since those trucks hold multiple vehicles - off they went. Take any confirmed time as an estimate at best and plan accordingly. Delivery early in the morning was after 5 in afternoon.
I am going to throw this out and then duck and cover. I know Texas was number 2 and undefeated but, based on what happened in the Orange Bowl, does anyone have doubts that Texas would have been MNC if they had won. The entire media circus was devoted to pushing Nebraska/Miami as the MNC game and they jumped to number 1 from around 6 after winning. I could see an undefeated Texas suffering the same jump. Not going to say it was absolute but the possibility exists since the NBC media machine spent an entire month convincing writers that the Orange Bowl was it. And I'm still mad about that season. Auburn lost to Texas and played something like 6 teams in top 10 while Miami lost badly to Florida. At number 3 we had a better case for being MNC than anyone else that year after 1 and 2 lost. Nebraska was nothing but hype since they opened with a huge win over Penn State (defending MNC) and played no one else.
well crap.. Just got email from shop working on my 1962 MGA. The head is toast - cracked/repaired and cracked again. Not that I really want matching components but they only made that engine for one year and it had a special head. Otherwise known as unobtainium. Good news is you can modify an early MGB head to replace it but still wanted original.
Actually read an article that made more sense. It was not unworn. He bought it fro scuba diving and never used it for that but did wear it some. Still probably the best example of a slightly used Daytona
fake an injury and take body bag back.. actually I have been in body bag - not as much fun as it looks
Edit - never mind. Further reading says lift was going up before down.
saw a special the other night on making that one. Lot's of interesting stuff - filming all night etc. Plus for part of the chase they needed special permits since the race car is not street legal. still liked BMW's "The Hire" better
or give them an old HP calculator with Reverse Polish Notation and watch them fumble away with no "=" key. And before someone yells - RPN is actually what it is called
Both my ER trips were at BC. Going down Hill of Life the front wheel stuck and I flew like Superman. Landed groin first on a pointed rock. Had some really interesting colors for a week (no pics).
Crap - he was a tremendous passer in the SEC 3 yards and dust era. Looking at some old video (which is really hard to find since a lot of games were on radio and the teams didn't keep a lot of old video) - he would have been very good in a RPO offense in today's game. No idea on the cause but he battled throat or mouth cancer a few years ago. Loved the old mesh jersies - pretty sure they were banned because they tore away when grabbed
Kinda surprised no one on TV or radio mentioned this - but it has been 50 years. Juan Marichal hit two Dodgers as a pitcher and then while at bat turned and started hitting the Dodger catcher - John Roseboro over the head with his bat. One of the few things I could think of that was close - using a weapon during a game. Poor quality but there wasn't a lot of video back then
