This is an issue all over the developing world. Need oil to run water pumps. Well shit, we want to go green, so lets do dams. Then no rain. Well shit, now we don't have water or power.

I read something a few years ago about the Japanese developing tidal power (not a new idea by any means), which would seemingly be ideal for an island nation.  I haven't read up on new developments on that in a while.

Personally, I've always been partial to the idea of solar updraft towers and their potential, specifically for arid areas.  In order to work, you need a canopy, which could double as a greenhouse.  Additionally part of the updraft captures the moisture and leaves it within the canopy, thus helping with irrigation.

That said, there are a lot of good ideas, just not developing quickly enough, for lots of reasons.

  3. Interesting points in the below article, what mainly stuck out to me is that water is now a problem, something that didn't immediately jump out to me (it should have) as they are dependent on pumping systems.

Article below explains the why, for those interested.  To summarize, Cuba is dependent on imported oil, predominantly imported from Venezuela (which has cut shipments due to their own problems).  Additionally, the plants in Cuba have been woefully maintained for generations.

“And that was the last Wichita Falls Ladies Sewing Circle potluck I ever went to.”

Who am I kidding, I’d go back every month. If just for Ms. Wallace’s pimento cheese sandwiches.

    And the sex show.

I just hope you don't defile the fondue.

Yes, they can absolutely take your phone.  BUT....can they get into it?  That's the question.

A court cannot order you to give up your passcode -- that's in your head, and it would violate your rights to be forced to disclose what is in your brain.  HOWEVER, they don't need a warrant or order at all to press your thumb onto it, or point it at your face for facial recognition to open it.  Biometrics are not protected by the 5th amendment.

Which is why I have NEVER enabled biometric access on any of my devices (all of which contain at least a portal to attorney-client privileged info -- my email, etc.).  If the cops seize it, then they seize it.  And yes, passwords can be cracked, the FBI does it sometimes, but it's not a guarantee.  And the delay gives me a chance to tell my IT department to lock down my email (not destroy or delete, but prevent ALL access).  I have long recommended to people NOT to enable biometric access to your devices.

Yes, but my bank won't complete the wire transfer to the hitman without my thumb print.

On #4, is that that those countires have returned 10.2% and 11.7% of their vote returned versus 2020 at THIS TIME, or just their total vote return is in versus 2020 and we still have about 90% left for both of them?

Imagine thinking half our budget is fucking funds for public education. What is it, like 2%?

At this time, it's what they've returned in comparison to the total output of 2020.

I think it's just that stupid people bet on results that they're hoping for. There were quite a few that bet on Conor McGregor to beat Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match.

Since Mayweather had always been a convincing favorite throughout his career -- -200 against Pacquiao, -300 versus Canelo Alvarez, -400 against Shane Mosely -- professional bettors couldn't believe they could get a similar price on Mayweather versus McGregor.

Mayweather's odds dipped under -400 in the days leading up the fight, and the big, smart money began appearing.

    So like normal gambling?

In fairness, that could be a clip of any three women of that age and station in life.......seeing the typical posts on Surly.

Every male poster on this site has seen/earned that look.  Most of us within the past 24 hours.

So, "a bit close to home," etc.

I've gotten that look 3 or 4 times today alone, and I think I've had a pretty good day.  I've also hardly been at home.

Women routinely outvote men. Polls seem to try to make it 50/50 or 51/49 but if its 52/48 or better, that’s huge.

There are a couple of worrying (albeit minor trends)

    1.  African American votes are 178k thus far, only approximately 29% of the vote.

    2.  Fulton County (Atlanta proper) has only 72k out of 891k from 2020 votes cast thus far - this lags the state numbers, albeit on a minor level.  Dekalb County, also a Democratic stronghold is lagging the state number as well.

    3.  By age - 291k of cast votes are from those 65 and older.  (Not fretting this, the older typically vote early)

I’m shocked it can lift one. I’m guessing it’s welded plate steel to keep the weight modest?

It's a good question, I'm thinking a normal one weighs at least a couple of hundred pounds.  Generally speaking there is some steel in them for form, reinforcement, and to have any eye-bolt.  Maybe these are lighter which is fine for how they are using them (my understanding is that they are setting these at night on roads they know the Russian's are sending Ladas with ammo at high speed and no lights to avoid drone attack, thus causing high speed wrecks with them).

You have to take into account that some of them just aren’t smart enough to compete. The poor dumb white guy has limited opportunities, just like he did 20 years ago just like he did 40 years ago.

But now that the mine is closed down or the factory is gone, anyone that was smart enough or ambitious enough to get the fuck out and do something is gone. So the only ones that are left are the morons.

And when you’re sitting around poor and dumb, I’m sure it’s a real seductive message to be hearing that it’s not your fault. It’s their fault. You’re a red blooded white skinned natural born American in the country that built the world. Greatness is your birthright if only those people over there would stop fucking it up. The blacks and the browns and the Jews and the Asians and the Indians and the Muslims and the gays and the trans are all being handed what should be yours. And it’s the fucking democrats that are giving away your birthright.

There is also a big failure to launch problem that I've noticed.  I'm not sure if it's entirely because of helicopter parenting, which someone alluded to earlier or what.  In my neighborhood, there are multiple guys in the 30s that literally have never left home (they aren't all white, well one guy isn't).  They don't get jobs very often, when they do, they are as dead end as possible; and of course they never last.  You don't necessarily have to have a collegiate education to be successful in this country, there are plenty of guys in trades that do great.  However, these guys that fail to launch (and I loathe the term) seem to have no interest in pursuing anything at all, not mechanics, not a trade, nothing.  Basically, there's a just a pure loser quotient in all this.
