1st down commanders, by an eyelash.

Finally , what looks to be a really good game. I like Quinn, and I can put up with Kliff. This guy Daniels is a cool, cool, customer.

Johnny Sky Walker..."Johnny got the nickname "Sky Walker" because of the way he would jump over defenses to score."

About the 1984 Cotton Bowl. Both January 2025 and January 1984 have something in common. We lost our star RB in both years. In 1983 Edwin Simmons was the best freshman RB in the country. Go back and look at his Texas-OU highlights. Unbelievable speed hitting the hole, was going to run for probably 1300 yards easily. Had knee injury, doctors somehow found out one of his legs was significantly shorter than the other and he was basically done. Other thing in common, we had the best D in UT history in 1983 and this one ranks #2 or 3 imo. The 1981 D was probably better than this one. Harder hitting, but didn't have to defend much against the pass. The question to ask is how long will we be in the wilderness? January 1984 to 1990-shock the nation, only to be humiliated against Miami. Then six more years to James Brown, "maybe we'll beat them by 21?" and then finally 8 or 9 more years. I actually count beating Michigan in the 2005 Rose Bowl as being completely back to National prominence, as it laid the foundation for the 2006 game. I strongly believe knowing the scene and all the things about the Rose Bowl helped the team immensely. We are most definitely not going into the wilderness x number of years after this year. We should be back, right away.

I have the ultimate two remaining answers on the 1st and goal, one of which has already been proposed. 1. The Ravens showed us yesterday how to run the tush push, without possible harm to the QB. Utilize a strong non-QB. They use the TE. Take the snap from center the old-fashonied way and tush push works, about 99% of the time. I think I have seen it stopped once. 2. I remembered this morning Johnny Walker, RB for UT in the 80s, he flew over the pile, and this tactic was copied by Bo Jackson, among others. If I remember correctly, Walker would line up in the I, run to the line, take the handoff from a QB taking the snap directly from center, plant both feet on or about the 2 yard line and fly over the pile at the goal line. He was such a great flyer, he might have been able to take off from the 3, but I don't remember. I just saw an article online and he was nicknamed "Sky" Walker. I don't remember that, but he definitely flew over the goal line whenever needed. Maybe we need to recruit a flyer, but we can afford to do this now that we have NIL. So, we now have at least four ways to gain one yard of which we utilized 0 the other day, and all four require taking the snap directly from center: 1. QB sneak 2. fake FB dive, roll out, run pass option 3. Tush push-strong man not QB. 4. Fly over the goal line. Is there any problem with teaching the QB and strong man to take the snap from center? serious question.

and there is the blonde chick referee, getting close to the pile, like she's gonna do something!!! HA!!!!

late to this trying to figure out what to run business. Assume, a. Arch is out-concussion b. we don't like to take the snap from center, but we can do that and c. QE is healthy enough to execute a run-pass option. I would have done the old-fashioned, take the snap from center, run play action, and had QE rollout and do run-pass option. The key would be the surprise. Do it on a down they don't expect, I guess 1st down? looks like I'm agreeing with Kel. Or once you get to third or fourth down show a shotgun look, but rush to the line and do a quick-count QB sneak? One thing, I am glad I don't get paid to think of the things that would work down there when my team is not having the great night needed at the OL positions. The OL had no room for error. They needed to play out-of-their minds great and it didn't happen. But coaches too, they needed to be great. Perfection was the order of the day and it nobody was perfect last night, except maybe the secondary guys covering the top two Ohio St. WRs.

I'll take a shot. We were not winning the game if we scored at the end because we would have kicked the extra point, and Chip Kelley is the OC for the other team. I had forgotten how good he was. He outcoached our team by himself. Yes, this D was championship level, but picked the very worst time to give up a 75. yard TD. We had 0 room for error, because we were playing a team as good as us. It felt to me that not only were they equally talented as us, but that their QB was getting incredibly lucky throwing into double coverages the first half. 2nd half, when his luck wore out, the refs bailed him out by not calling holding, at least that one third down. And kudos to the commentators, they realized Howard had not run any in the game and actually predicted he would run on that very important down, either a 3rd or 4th down. Our OL? Were they injured? worn out? Or was OhioSt. just better? About the fourth and goal. I flashed back to GD, because GD would have used any QB as a battering ram to get that last yard. Never forget how he called two or three strait QB sneaks for Colt to get that last yard against kState, and that was with an inferior OL. I don't know anything, but I always felt like the Arch package had to have some passing in it, maybe a jump pass or something. I missed last year's game against Washington, on a flight to Alaska, so this is what it feels like, huh? I kept getting the same feeling, we need a break. Seriously, we just needed the 1983 defense to magically appear and return an interception. I keep repeating myself, but this team wasting this D is not the worst example. The 1983 D was so good, it outscored the offense in a game against TCU. The D scored two TDs and the O scored one TD. That team was the #1 D in the country and we lost the NC game by one point, 10-9. Plug in an int returned for a TD and this game is different. Overall, I would much rather be in this situation than before. With NIL we will get the players. Our exposure will be great because we should be in the playoffs every year. It may all come down to coaching. It did last night.

All time Texas QB Ranking Discussion - 2025
JGrayDBU replied to BurntOrange&White's topic in Football
One other thing, wrt QBs. At Texas we have always had to have a QB carry the team, when we won the NC. Obvious, right? VY, Colt, Street all carried the team at a NC level. IMO, Colt was about three GD/Mack decisions from winning two NCs. a. GD/Mack decision to have Colt QB sneak 2 or 3 times into the teeth of the KState line the week before he got injured against Aggy. Not sure which year this was, probably 2007, definitely not 2009. It weakened his shoulder/neck area no doubt. b. GD/Mack decision to have Colt run the ball against 'bama. c. GD/Mack decision to not tell Colt to slow down the tempo just a bit so we could leave less time on the clock against Tech. -
All time Texas QB Ranking Discussion - 2025
JGrayDBU replied to BurntOrange&White's topic in Football
People I would like to see interviews with about this game: James Street - RIP, obvious...and Randy David Arledge - got more mentions than anybody on Texas team not named Street, I think. Bill Montgomery - obvious, great passer, played near mistake free ball until the two interceptions Chuck Dicus - was he this good all the time? At least nine catches. Coach Campbell and sons- especially what it was like in the next to last game of their careers together with Dad? Cheerleader dude Clarinet girl who couldn't even play, she was so overcome with emotion Colonel Sanders- didn't know until just now he was at the game, wow! Vincent DiNino - LHB director. everything was so much more up tempo back then. noticed in the fourth quarter LHB played Grandiose during the Hogs Offensive possession, didn't stop for the snap, and drowned out the hogs fans doing a woo pig sooie chant. So LHB drowned out about 40,000 fans! Of course I realize those people are all dead most likely. I guess cheerleader dude and clarinet girl might still be alive. Already saw interview of Royal, when he re-watched the game one night with the PBS station in Austin, I think late 1970s. He offered lots of good commentary that night. -
Prediction Contest- Cotton Bowl- Texas v Ohio State
JGrayDBU replied to Wulaw Horn's topic in Football
you certainly have the right point spread, at least from my point of view. look at my prediction, and then go back and look at the 2006 Rose Bowl score and yards. it's going to be exciting no doubt! -
McElroy gets a solid vote from me in addition to his skills, because of his honesty. I heard him years ago say that when he was living in the metroplex, every time he would sit down to do business with someone, they would remind him that he was the best hand-off man on the field in the Texas'bama 2010 game, and got lucky to win. He said he got so sick of it, he moved to Alabama. ha! Then the other day he was making fun of himself and said there were two things he can do on the football field. 1. count to make sure everybody is lined up correctly and 2. hand off. Klatt normally has immense respect for Texas, maybe because he barely survived against us?

K with 40 fgs in a year? has to be close to NFL record? -
Why is Mariota a backup? Totally forgotten about him. Only 31 years old, just had a perfect drive against Dallas. Dallas, I know.

For the next two games, we need to become the very best version of the 1976 Oakland Raiders we can be. A long time ago I read that John Madden went to Kenny Stabler, who called all of his own plays, before the season to tell him he wanted to make a simple change. Instead of running to set up the pass, Madden wanted Stabler to pass to set up the run. It worked like a charm! Raiders won the whole thing, and this was before Kenny lost his fastball and could throw the ball deep. That team had some of the best receivers in the decade, with Cliff Branch the speedster, Biletnikoff the possession receiver, and Dave Casper the tight end. Teams were plenty confused about what was coming.

Game Week Thread 2024 Week 17 - Cotton Bowl CFP Semifinal Texas vs Ohio State
JGrayDBU replied to Wulaw Horn's topic in Football
Wrt comparing this game to the 2006 NC game, we only had one true 5 star, once in a generation player, VY, but SC had two, Reggie and Matt. VY will probably rate as the best player in two or three generations when it's all over. How did we achieve victory in '06? On the verge of being toast until our DL stopped Lendale White on fourth and one. Victory will be determined by the unheralded players. This game will be determined by the lines of scrimmage players and whichever team gets better luck on turnovers. I hope the media keeps up the bulletin board material. One a day would be great. -
Game Week Thread 2024 Week 17 - Cotton Bowl CFP Semifinal Texas vs Ohio State
JGrayDBU replied to Wulaw Horn's topic in Football
Stephen A has a good point, about the sloppiness. How else do you explain the 3rd quarter blues? As I watched the game, I was borderline happy we only got outscored 5-0 in the 3rd quarter. Especially the safety, when the ball was dislodged, it flew straight to Ewers so he could fall in the end zone giving ASU only 2 points. Could have easily been a TD for them. I wouldn't mind more ESPN bulletin board material. Of course there is no way to approach the December 2005 propaganda that led to the "USC vs greatest armies in history" thread on an old site. This is one of those years where I optimistically feel like Sark has something left in the gameplan he hasn't used, but the only thing I can think of at the moment is to come out of the 2nd half on offense with the hurry up no huddle. The other obvious idea is to come out with Arch leading the team. At this point, we've got to face reality. We're losing the 3rd quarter regardless, so what does it hurt to try something different? My intense interest is in three factors: a. injuries, b. luck during the game, and c. being worn out. We have played three overtimes in recent games compared to 0 for Ohio St. correct? The fourth and possibly more important factor is officiating. Are former PAC-12 officials considered neutral? Where did they land? Other than them, ACC is good, so who else is left? Obviously no big10, big12, or SEC. Mountain West? AAC? -
I believe you can watch that exact thing in the Colt McCoy interview after the loss to 'bama. Easily the best interview of a losing player I have ever seen.
-
Wrt the refs. I feel like it is such a rarity to get neutral refs, but I have looked and can't find a true box score. Felt like there were so many uncalled penalties against them, almost like a Rig 12 job again, but that won't show up in a box score. Does holding ever get called against our opponents? I mean ever? And pass interference, targeting, illegal man downfield, etc. Even though the Clemson game had neutral refs, they. missed the illegal picks on the Clemson TD early. Does this mean after the fiasco yesterday we are overdue for neutral refs against OhioSt?

I haven't read a word of this thread, as I was in RR watching the game with my soon to be 89 year old dad, class of 1960, and my younger brother, who is a North Texas jazz man teaching jazz at a small private college in Indiana. Some observations: 1. This old man still has his marbles, AND fascinates me with some of his analysis. At what I was sure was the end of the year, when the refs looked for targeting against us, I said "they're gonna get us for targeting, game over," and he calmly stated he did not think it was targeting. He was right of course, and I asked him specifically what he saw that made him think it was not targeting, and he replied he "did not see the receiver's head snap back", and I said "I defer to you on any further targeting calls." 2. Of course I probably fascinated him with my prediction that our kicker would miss both kicks and "We need Dicker the Kicker" out there. 3. As far as the RB goes, we gave up calling his name, and substituted "Superman". When we heard he threw up on the sideline, we noticed a specific trend. When he was in the game he was either the decoy or the only offense they had. I will never forget that run near the goal line in which we stopped him but it took 6 of our guys hitting him to knock him down. He took the handoff at the five, immediately got hit with a hit that would make most RBs fall immediately iMO, then kept going and was finally knocked to the ground by the sixth defensive man to contact him at the 2 yard line. 4. I think it is very possible I learned today what fans of teams who played against VY in 2005 must have felt. You don't tug on superman's cape, but sometimes you get lucky and superman finally gets worn out. I cannot believe we actually beat Superman today. If I'm a GM in the NFL today, I take this guy 1st round easy 5. Our Special Teams coach needs some quality time with the best Special Teams coach of all-time to try to figure out how to defend against a fake punt. Is it Bill Belichek? Why do we suck at defending the fake punt? 6. FG kicker? try someone else!!! Is it true we have a stud kicker on scholarship who is not kicking because ????
