  1. I think the Russians had 13-15,000 deaths for the entire Afghan war, right? And that lasted a decade. And they're estimating 150,000 troop losses by March 1? Does "troop losses" mean KIA or is that any kind of casualty or MIA?
  2. Just another part of what makes that nation's history such a tragedy. Hell, they might be the richest nation on the planet if their revolutionaries hadn't been communists.
  3. I just watched Trauma Zone on YouTube after a suggestion from a poster on the documentaries thread, and for as bad as I thought it had/has been over there, I really had no idea. Makes me wonder if Russia might've been better off being conquered by the Nazis, and then by the Allies (assuming that would've been doable after Hitler had his hands on Russia's resources), and thereby ending that communist regime. Regardless, it's a tragedy of a national history.
  4. What's your perception of how well this is going? (asking sincerely, not being smart alec)
  5. People my age grew up so scared of the Soviet Union and every time we get some look into how it was over there it's just incredible. They're filming the police recruits pulling triggers but using sound effects for the gunshots because they didn't have enough ammunition. That whole thing was being held together with duct tape and baling wire but we didn't know it. They still had the nuclear arsenal, though, and I'm guessing they had enough that plenty would've made it over here.
  6. I completely agree with everyone in that I've never remotely considered watching/not watching a game because of who's in the booth--though I have wished on numerous occasions that it wasn't Beth Mowins. But as for their compensation, you're basically arguing to let the networks keep more of the money if you pay them less, which is no big deal to me either way, but if they can get a gig like that and make millions, more power to them.
  7. One can only assume they believe the broadcasters are responsible for a huge chunk of the viewership that drives ad sales, therefore they get a big cut.
  8. I enjoy a good restaurant but not a pretentious one. I despise that in any context. My favorite restaurant is The Slogar in Crested Butte, CO. They bring out a plate of deliciously fried chicken, a bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and a plate of biscuits and you go to town, family style. Ice cream for dessert. Heaven.
  9. Actually wikipedia phrased it better than I:
  10. I've commented about this before, but both Omega Man and I am Legend absolutely skewered what was a fantastic story in the novel, by inexplicably changing the ending. If anyone's interested, I'll spoiler it.
  11. This Greg Olsen deal is ridiculous. Olsen's making 10 mil a year right now. When Brady comes aboard, Olsen drops to the #2 team and his salary goes down to 3 million. Tom Brady's salary will be.... 37.5 million. And I don't see a universe in which Brady will be near as good as Olsen at this job.
  12. Because you can't win, Rock! This guy'll kill you to death inside of 3 rounds.
  13. He did the Mexican accent in mocking fashion and made "beaner" references. If somebody wants to, they can call that racist, but I took as stereotype-based humor that didn't have any hatred behind it.
  14. I went into the ER recently because my bp shot up to 210 over 125 and my heart rate was 130. I'm sure the accompanying anxiety just exacerbated the problem, though I was doing my best to meditate. Anyway, a doc in the ER said, "The right side of face is drooping, so we're gonna admit you." I also had the red carpet experience you described, I guess certain symptoms bump you to the front of the line. The CT scan and MRI were all negative for stroke and after a 2-day stay no one really knew what had happened. I'm curious, do they have you on gabapentin or pregabalin as an anticonvulsant? Also, sent a few prayers up for you.
  15. Well my review of Nocturnal Animals is pretty simple. This thing got an absolute ton of praise for a story that's basically a Taylor Swift revenge song, only across a ridiculously longer duration.
  16. I gave this one a fair shot, I think, but it was too absurd for me. "Snobby people are shallow and boring" isn't profound, and I didn't find the way they chose to satirize them terribly clever. I think the South Park guys would be far more creative with that topic. It did have some funny quips, and ATJ is always a joy to observe.
  17. Mags isn't an anti-hero. She's a pure villain.
  18. Women over 75 who've still got it?

Well at this rate, they'll have to fend off pirates on the open sea, then deal with the mobsters in Galveston and fight off some holdout Indian tribe on the way to Montana.

    Whoa! Did not recognize him.
  21. Just watched Thirteen Days again. I've seen it a few times. Thoroughly enjoy it every time, though from the first viewing I figured that Kenny O'Donnell's role in the film was being greatly exaggerated compared to what really happened. Which is true. History Buffs just released a video about this a few days ago. That channel is fantastic, by the way. He's got a huge library of historical films he examines for historical accuracy. If you want to laugh, watch his video about Apocalypto. He blasts Mel Gibson's historical films, in general, but he sodomized that one.

This is all in the eye of the beholder of course, but for me the "brit blondo" is in a very, very small class. I can't deny that part of it is how well she's nailing that posh brit accent.
