  1. You’re telescoping a couple of centuries of development there, though. The only colony advocating separation of church and state early on was Rhode Island-established as a refuge because Roger Williams was expelled from Massachusetts as a heretic, precisely because the Puritans did NOT believe in it.
  2. It’s not a matter of it not being fully developed; they didn’t believe in it at all. There’s a broad misconception that people like the Pilgrims came here seeking “religious freedom.” They already had that in Holland. They came here largely to establish their own religion.
  3. Yeah, if Diaz is not significantly better as a bat, he’s not going to last. That’s the reason he’s here. Edit: And for a bat first prospect who hit well through the minors to then be interchangeable with literally one of the worst hitting everyday players in baseball history would be a pretty disappointing outcome to say the least.
  4. Sure, but that’s never going happen. You could even continue with the fascination of alternating handedness at the top right now and have pretty much the ideal lineup by the book: Bregman Alvarez Abreu Tucker But even if the numbers dictate it, gut instinct finely tuned c. 1975 says you want speed at the top more than anything.
  5. Which is still better than actual Brantley at this point.
  6. At least here, before they switched a couple of years ago, they surveyed parents and it was nearly unanimous in favor of 4 day weeks. So much so that the neighboring town moved to 4 days because they were losing students. And the “losing precious hours of instructional time” is just false. The whole reason they are able to do this is because the school year is mandated in hours of time rather than days.
  7. And if you really want to go insane, compare their defensive metrics in CF.
  8. He has 2 years of data to indicate McCormick should be an everyday player, yet he has taken every opportunity possible to play someone else. I’m not sure why one more game would be a tipping point. They literally have to trade guys away (Straw, Siri) or send them down (Meyers) to keep him in the lineup.
  9. You should have asked for their help on that first sentence.
  10. Umm, once Altuve is healthy, it's the same lineup that just won the World Series except subbing in Jose Abreu for the corpse of Yuli Gurriel. So it's not exactly the same, it's better there. We'll see how the pitching shakes out.
  11. The only hate I have is for this artificial “rivalry.”
  12. Well you’re thinking like Dusty, at any rate.
  13. They insisted Opening Day. But I guess technically they didn’t specify what year.
  14. Well last night, it was because Meyers had a better chance of hitting Cease’s fastball. Because gut feeling. Tonight, I’m sure there’s an equally well-reasoned explanation.
  15. It's a distinction that Christians might be kind of interested in. It's kind of what this thread is all about (at least initially).
  16. I know they have a lot more tools to analyze this than we do, but the publicly available metrics all say McCormick is more than adequate defensively.
  17. Not as open as spots 3-5 in the Yankees rotation.
  18. You could just leave it at Brantley.
  19. Gotcha. That makes sense now rereading it, but for some reason I thought at first you were talking about 3 different players, not 2.
  20. That’s the same guy. Who are you referring to?
  21. Sounds like you’re right if you listen to that video, except they want Lee to play everyday in AAA instead of ride the pine. Which explains Salazar (who?)
  22. I mean, it’s not like they will just change the lineup if it doesn’t work.
  23. If it’s not for more than three years, we might as well not hire him. That’s cutting him off at the knees before he even starts. And why would he sign that with other major schools looking at him? But I don’t believe we’d do that.
