  1. I trust that they’ll make more moves and still have a good team. It’s not the end of the world. But even I give them the full benefit of the doubt and Montero is the best setup man in baseball for the next 3 year, it’s *still* a poor allocation of resources given the needs of the team. Edit: I’d add that this sort of move seems antithetical to a typical Astros’ move, too. I’m not sure who is running the ship right now and if they have, in fact, earned the trust you speak of.
  2. Even if he performs well, it’s *still* a bad move based on process. They have at least 3 guys already under contract capable of filling high leverage roles before Pressly (Stanek, Nerris, Abreau). There’s such excess that Stanek basically disappeared in the postseason. And that’s before you get to anyone already in the system or bargain basement relievers they can find and reshape-let’s not forget, Montero himself was a throw in on the Graveman trade, he was about to be DFA. Find the next Montero, don’t overpay for the last one. That’s what has made this org great.
  3. That’s how you close your own window. That Montero deal is terrible.
  4. If they resign Verlander, they have to move someone. Urquidy is the obvious choice.
  5. If Verlander walks, that obviously frees up a lot of money; if he resigns, a pitcher is getting moved, one of Urquidy or Garcia. Urquidy would be preferable, because he’s older, has fewer years of control, and Garcia has better stuff; but that’s also why Garcia would likely net a better return. Either way, there’s a great opportunity here. I can see both sides of it. The only thing they can’t afford to do is just run it back with the same guys. Montero is wasted money. Yuli is washed. Brantley is a very qualified *maybe* depending on his medicals and the contract he wants. There’s no reason this team shouldn’t be even better next season.
  6. I kind of thought that maybe, but it’s not like there’s going to be an “official statement” on that. That’s the sort of thing that usually only comes out after the fact.
  7. Not sure exactly what you mean, but he is officially a free agent.
  8. I wouldn’t offer him anything, there’s much greater needs.
  9. It's fair to acknowledge Click built a great bullpen, and that was pretty much his doing. It's also fair to acknowledge he inherited all the pitchers in the rotation (unless you want to count Odorizzi...). I don't see why there needs to be different "sides" to this, it's pretty straightforward.
  10. 120+ (let alone 157) is insane. I don't see how that's even possible.
  11. It never would have occurred to me that they were for anything but that.
  12. Getting Contreras for cash is good. Getting him for Urquidy was not.
  13. That doesn’t make him “more right.” It makes him half right at best. And, for what it’s worth, if you’re consistent in that logic, it means his offer for Contreras dumb, because they clearly didn’t need him either. (And it was dumb: 3+ years of control of a proven major league pitcher for a rental part part-time catcher is asinine.)
  14. I don’t see how anyone can put McGriff above Palmeiro unless it’s a hardline stance against PEDs (which it’s clearly not for those with Bonds and Clemens there too).
  15. Neither of those things is true. It would be a terrible decision for them not to give him a qualifying offer (and I would be shocked if he accepted).
  16. Adley Rutschman is hardly a random. He might already be the best catcher in baseball.
  17. Defensive metrics are a bit more tricky to begin with, and a single year is particularly noisy. But if you are looking at his, you need to go look at Yuli’s too-you might be surprised.
  18. Somebody might offer him 3, a la Scherzer. No one is going to offer more than 3 (which is what I said).
  19. I expect him to get 2 as well at around $40 mil/yr. Basically a similar deal to the one for 2020-21 but at higher AAV. I don’t know that the opt out is necessary, that seemed to be injury related and he’s not likely to get any more on the open market if he’s already being paid at the top.
  20. I don’t think there’s any way any team offers Verlander a contract longer than 3 years.
  21. Yeah, there are guys in the bullpen right now who are better at stopping left handed hitters than most LHP. It’s not really a need.
  22. Agreed. He’s worth more than a rental with his years of control.
  23. This would be more logical if they hadn’t gone on to trade for a different catcher in his walk year.
  24. I don't see any readily available upgrades in CF over McCormick. If he played fulltime, his season this year projects to about 2.5 WAR, which would make him a top 8 or so CF. And he demonstrated some real improvements in his approach, striking out less and walking more. He's really underrated, in my opinion. I'd let Meyers compete with him if healthy, and obviously McCormick is even more ideally suited for a role as a platoon against LHP and/or a 4th outfielder. But I think generally it will be easier to upgrade LF/DH (someone to fill the Brantley role and let Alvarez get out of the field more) than to find someone better than McCormick.
