  1. Neither of those things is true. It would be a terrible decision for them not to give him a qualifying offer (and I would be shocked if he accepted).
  2. Adley Rutschman is hardly a random. He might already be the best catcher in baseball.
  3. Defensive metrics are a bit more tricky to begin with, and a single year is particularly noisy. But if you are looking at his, you need to go look at Yuli’s too-you might be surprised.
  4. Somebody might offer him 3, a la Scherzer. No one is going to offer more than 3 (which is what I said).
  5. I expect him to get 2 as well at around $40 mil/yr. Basically a similar deal to the one for 2020-21 but at higher AAV. I don’t know that the opt out is necessary, that seemed to be injury related and he’s not likely to get any more on the open market if he’s already being paid at the top.
  6. I don’t think there’s any way any team offers Verlander a contract longer than 3 years.
  7. Yeah, there are guys in the bullpen right now who are better at stopping left handed hitters than most LHP. It’s not really a need.
  8. Agreed. He’s worth more than a rental with his years of control.
  9. This would be more logical if they hadn’t gone on to trade for a different catcher in his walk year.
  10. I don't see any readily available upgrades in CF over McCormick. If he played fulltime, his season this year projects to about 2.5 WAR, which would make him a top 8 or so CF. And he demonstrated some real improvements in his approach, striking out less and walking more. He's really underrated, in my opinion. I'd let Meyers compete with him if healthy, and obviously McCormick is even more ideally suited for a role as a platoon against LHP and/or a 4th outfielder. But I think generally it will be easier to upgrade LF/DH (someone to fill the Brantley role and let Alvarez get out of the field more) than to find someone better than McCormick.
  11. Not sure how he fit in so well in such a Latin heavy clubhouse. At any rate, if a guy's contributions at this point in his career are more valuable off the field than on the field, then it sounds like he should be in a role off the field.
  12. Yes https://www.houstonchronicle.com/texas-sports-nation/astros/article/Martin-Maldonado-2023-option-kicks-in-17388095.php
  13. Some of you need to separate your emotions from the decision and realize you’re advocating resigning a guy who will be 39 and was worse than replacement level this year. He was a black hole on offense at a bat first position. It’s awesome he rebounded in the postseason. Thanks for the memories and let it go.
  14. So he didn't discuss the 2nd half in a section entitled "Great 1st half for Quinn Ewers and the passing game"?
  15. They’ve already got that guy. They need a LF. And 1B.
  16. That’s impossible to answer without knowing how healthy he is. That plus his age is kind of the issue.
  17. Then put them on staff if they are willing to retire and stick around. That sort of thinking leads to stagnation. Those positions can and should be upgraded.
  18. You misunderstand. They should try to resign Verlander. The other 2 should be sent down the road with genuine thanks.
  19. I think you’re taking a joke a bit too seriously. But you should be looking for his 5th hit anyway: he started the season 4-54. I’d call that a streak of futility close to 4-63, but we’re just splitting hairs. Maldonado is arguably the worst hitting non-pitcher in baseball history, so to be compared to him in any case means you’re having a bad run. Which was, you know, the joke.
  20. I mean, that’s just a typical 3 weeks at the office for Maldonado.
  21. I’d say he signed up for all of it-for multiple years, in fact. He willingly tied his career to Kyrie. He might not be responsible for any particular manifestation of it, but the insanity that comes with him is inevitable. That’s what he committed to. The questionable personnel decisions he forced all around that are just icing on the cake.
  22. Javier isn’t going to give you more than 5 innings max on short rest anyway (and possibility more like 3-4). The plan in a game 7 should be for both those guys to pitch anyway. I don’t get the handwringing over which one appears first.
  23. Maybe they look at sample sizes larger than one game?
