  1. Or just completely ignore the last 5 days, whatever works. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2022/07/25/mlb-power-rankings-trade-deadline-standings/10141255002/
  2. This would obviously never happen in real life, but Baseball Trade Values accepted this: Astros get: Soto, Bell, Corbin Nationals get: Garcia, Brown, McCormick, Meyers, Diaz, Leon
  3. Jim Edmonds: the master of making easy catches look difficult by diving unnecessarily. One of my least favorite players of all time.
  4. He had a great serious turn as Burt Macklin.
  5. Justin Verlander in the 2017 ALCS comes to mind.
  6. It’s not about length of game so much as lack of action. An emphasis on 3 true outcomes+base hits being gobbled up means that there’s nothing going on except increasingly longer at bats most of the time.
  7. So many of the first 10 picks were college Seniors that they can sign underslot, they should have plenty of cash to facilitate it.
  8. Because first you’d have to pass over Antarctica which rings the entirety of the outside edge of the earth, of course.
  9. Not really. That’s just the way the Astros tend to draft. In both 2018 and 2019, they drafted 2 high schoolers in the first 35 rounds. They’ve been picking college bats in particular for a long time.
  10. Benintendi is just a Michael Brantley who cant play in Canada. Unless Brantley is not going to be healthy by October, I don’t see the point.
  11. "If you were a breakfast taco, and you were starving, would you eat yourself?"
  12. The op reads like an excerpt from the manifesto of a mad man. And yet, this is the most insane post on this thread.
  13. Thomas Malthus was worried about it a couple of hundred years before you were born. Maybe those concerns were misplaced.
  14. At least we missed the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s.
  15. Probably a poor choice of words on my part there, but not at all what I was trying to convey if you read the thread (and you added the “faith” part). I meant he’s all about glorifying himself. It’s narcissism.
  16. Could be. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just not convinced that’s the primary motivation. (And I’m a former high school athlete too, fwiw and my brother is a high school football coach). I read this guy as being much more inwardly than outwardly focused, personally. At any rate, speculating as to his motivation(s) doesn’t really matter too much. We agree more than disagree.
  17. Agree with the first part for sure. I think that’s tied up with the performative aspect of it-trying to create persecution where it doesn’t really exist. I’d probably agree with the second part too the way you phrased it here. I was speaking more to the initial motivation for someone engaging in this sort of spectacle.
  18. Ok?
  19. No one prevented you from praying in solitude and/or silence in the classroom or the on the football field either. I don’t think it’s primarily about proselytizing-there’s nothing particularly evangelistic about prayer, especially when it might feel compulsory. And I don’t think it’s primarily about control, either. That picture said it all: it’s performative. “Look at me! I’m so righteous!” And I say that as someone who IS religious.
  20. Of course it is. Those types have been around awhile: ”And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.” Edit: I was too slow.
  21. It’s probably people misusing “begs the question.”
  22. Still waiting for that eye roll reaction.
