  1. “I have come here to eat butter and win. And I’m all out of butter.”
  2. This article from late last night comparing Beard to Billy Gillispie is amazing. My favorite paragraph: ”There is a psychological term for those who view other human beings as mere tools for their own gratification and aggrandizement. The term is sociopath. Whether or not Beard fits the clinical definition of a sociopath, I cannot say. But what I can say with complete certainty is that his behavior in accepting the Texas job was sociopathic.” https://247sports.com/college/texas-tech/Article/Chris-Beard-Following-in-Billy-Clyde-Gillispies-Footsteps-Kirby-Hocutt-Kader-Tapsoba-Shaka-Smart-163521036/
  3. Man, comparing him to Wescott is harsh. Whatever your opinion on his basketball knowledge, at least he can write well. And without multiple grammatical errors in every post.
  4. He spent 2 years at Tech too with Beard.
  5. Umm, you said “elite” coaches, which to most people implied Saban and Meyer. If you meant the guys you just named instead...lol
  6. You think Nick Saban was available to poach? Yeah, that’s the point.
  7. That's not the first time "Bowling Alone" has been mentioned in this thread. I was just reading today a review of a new book Putnam has published, "The Upswing," that purports to explore how we went from an "I" society at the end of the 19th century to a "we" society and then swung back to "I" at the end of the 20th century/beginning of 21st - and how we can apply lessons from that earlier era to swing back. Not sure if anyone has read that one yet (I haven't). But it seems like it could be worth checking out.
  8. Ok. That I understand. But I would suggest that is more of an issue of hermeneutics, and I was talking strictly about exegesis.
  9. Sure, I get that. I was just thinking on a thread like this, someone referencing him might be coming from the same place I mentioned.
  10. I think of Lewis as an apologist more than a fantasy author, personally.
  11. I honestly have no idea what you’re arguing here. Texts should always be read in context. And outside of maybe some radical deconstructionist types on the one hand and people who don’t want any of that fancy book learning on the other, you’re not going to see any disagreement on that. The rest of your post seems to me to be a bunch of random claims that don’t have much to do with each other. Or anything I said.
  12. I believe Wulaw’s point was that they should be read in their historical context. I’d add the literary context too. Without getting into debates about how they should be interpreted, consider: 1) the passages you reference actually address women (as well as children, slaves, subjects of the Emperor, etc.). In fact, the household codes always address the “subordinate” member by society’s standards first-they are moral agents. They have a choice. That itself is radical in the first century. 2) more to the point, don’t stop reading there. See what the other party in these relationships is called to. It’s not to assert their dominance-quite the opposite.
  13. Don’t forget the “keep wealth and power” part, despite the texts in question being written when the church possessed neither.
  14. I’m not sure how COVID might have impacted the most recent numbers. But previously, a deeper dive into data suggested that the number of active Christians has basically held steady. It’s the nominal ones that have declined-basically, there’s no longer any real societal pressure to claim you’re a Christian when you don’t really believe it.
  15. I’d be almost as happy if you’re wrong on this as I was on you being right on Meyer.
  16. I'm not arguing should or should not. I'm just stating what they will do. Discussing Sampson (or anyone else with a sketchy history) is as detached from reality as Brad Stevens. It's not going to happen.
  17. It may be quaint, but it got Indiana on probation for 3 seasons. And he's a repeat offender after being investigated for basically the same thing at OU. There is no way Texas even considers Sampson.
  18. Does that really sting coming from a Texas basketball fan?
  19. Yeah that’s a terrible list. The only one I’d put above Ivey for sure is Musselman. Maybe Moser. There’s no way we even consider Sampson or Pitino.
  20. I’m not opposed to Ivey. But there is no way that hiring a guy with no head coaching experience and no college coaching experience at all is the “smarter play” versus a guy with proven success and deep tournament runs in the same conference.
  21. Umm...there were people around during the last ice age.
  22. Isn’t he actually a lawyer too? I don’t know if he ever practiced, but I think he went to Vanderbilt.
  23. I’m confident I could surrender and be executed at least as well as Davy Crockett.
  24. I think the surly 1% are actually those of us who got checks. Most everyone here is rich beyond the dreams of avarice.
  25. Had mine since last Friday night. Meanwhile, my dad got his yesterday, and brother still hasn’t gotten the one from December, let alone this one. Seems completely random.
