Well my point about the 3000k career club still stands. Okay, back to 300k's in a season, even in this era. Which pitcher achieved 300k+ in a single season in the fewest innings?
-
And there's not much on the horizon to join them. Kershaw this year. Even though he missed 20/21/22 with injuries (57 total K's over those three seasons), Sale appears to be healthy. I think he makes it before 40yo. Cole is a question mark. 50/50 shot, at best. And then anybody else even close to 2000 is pushing 40yo. So maybe 2 more, 3 with some miracle within our lifetimes? 19 of the 20 (assuming Kershaw gets it this year), will have occurred in the last 50 years, 7 just in the last 20.

2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.

And we know nothing about it? It was part of the teleprompter, sir. Or this like a "Happy Fun Ball" situation? "The projectile components of Happy Fun Ball include an unknown glowing substance which fell to Earth, presumably from outer space." -
Yes. Phil Niekro had 3, first of his kind to the 3k mark. Sabbathia would join him 35 years later, also with 3, on his way. To your previous answer of Sutton. He also holds the esteemed mark of being the only modern-era pitcher to get to 300 career wins, while winning 20+ in a single season.........just once. 14 wins for 23 seasons, on average. Led the league in GS just once. Never led the league in IPs, averaged just 2bb/9inn, only 3 seasons with an ERA over 4.00 in 23 seasons. Only saw him much later in his career on his '88 Dodgers farewell tour. Didn't realize how consistent that guy was until now.
-
Decent guess. But Sutton recorded 200+K's in 5 seasons. Obviously, longevity is the key hint here. Think old-school, inning eaters with rather average K/9i ratios.

You freaked the shit outta me. He was 52 actually. I am now robustly into middle age, and I cannot tell how fucking old other adults are. There's a lot of older dads at our elementary school and we do dropoff duty together on Fridays and shoot the shit over coffee afterwards. And new guys will come in and introduce themselves and usual "Went to Texas", "Went to SMU", etc. And then some guy I figure is about my age will say "Finished undergrad in '09" WTF? And another guy I think is 10 years younger than me is 10 years older than me. I just want to make it to next year. Other random thought-if you've been driving around for over an hour with your radio/stereo volume at 3 or less, the car should just shut it off for you and save the power. My mother and my wife will drive for days with news/talk/religious radio on where you can't even hear it at a stoplight but get upset if I just switch it off. "Well, I find it soothing." You don't need to be soother doing 78 down the highway.

Boom. Vida Blue. Always found his baseball cards fascinating as a kid because of some of them (depending on Topps, Fleer, etc.) would show "VIDA" on the back instead of "BLUE" csb/ saw him pitch at Wrigley in '85 with my dad. On the theme of strikeouts: Which 3,000K+ career pitcher had the fewest 200k+ seasons?

Youth Minister's (and other pervs) Thread of Shame

"Super Troopers III" looks darker than I thought. 30 days for raping an 11-year old. Too light a sentence, he'll get preferable treatment, and 30 days isn't enough to develop a pattern on him to get to him. By that look on his face, he knows he got away with something. -
Yeah, I think we're getting into 'airport-adjacent' episodes. I'd switch over to boats, but the only 'actual' boat scene is Russell from NBC for Greenpeace. There's lots of 'boat-adjacent' episodes, shining from which is "The Andria Doria" Trains are plentiful with all the subway scenes. How about Busses? -Kramer Reality Tour -Can't remember the episode plot, but Kramer puts his head on Jerry's shoulder in the back row like in "The Graduate" (IIRC) -and obviously, 'Batman the Bus Driver'
-
Well, cross him off then. NSIAP, J.R. Richard? Or Louis Tiant?

the 70's/80's is a good hint but it's also drawing all my educated guesses away like Mark Langston (didn't pitch in the 70's IIRC). I was thinking some guys way back in the 50's/60's. It's either some flash in the pan who played late 70's/early 80's to qualify for the thing. Or it was some ace who racked up 300+ in the 1970's and bounced around in the 80's well beyond his prime. there's a bunch of guys in the 2000's, but they get locked down the second they have a small injury. I know it's not right, but I'll throw it out there to eliminate him but Mickey Lolich for Detroit?

If you were playing the drinking game "The Wall", where you have a shot every time he mentioned "The Wall" at the Southern Border specifically with that term and/or mentioning Mexico...congrats. You're probably feeling pretty good this morning. The other drinking games have a lot of hungover amateurs this morning. There's no point in bringing up what he said last night in 2016 and 2020, and has no plan for which to correct. But his people like his vagueness upon which they can plant the seeds of their own anger and frustration and hatred. He's a master of it. A true confidence man. There's so much to unpack about last night, but I'm still stuck on his segue from affection for Hannibal Lecter to literally a 9-minute riff on MS-13 and Migrant Murderers. And why Hannibal Lecter?
-
We're gonna build an Iron Dome and Mexico is gonna pay for it! I mean, Israel. I mean, Albania!
-
He just did 9-minutes on murders committed by migrants. Mention the horror of it all, and tie it back to border integrity...sure. But he rolled from literally talking about Hannibal Lecter to a minute riff on torture and murder. Kinda weird. Also, how the fuck does none of his makeup leak off onto his crisp collar with that much sweat? Whenever I sweat in a shirt and tie and it's over 85* for 5 minutes, my collars looks horrible. And Tang doesn't sponsor my after shave balm.
-
He's going full Lecter.

New York's hottest club is called "Milwaukee." Brought to you by promoter and muppet-come-to-life, Lara Trump. This place has it all. Ear gauze, tanning booths, trying stuff you can't in a small town, Amber Rose inking 'Eskimo Sisters' on everybody's genitals, Russell Brand sexual assault, Hulksters bench-pressing Kid Rocks, and a Cocaine Bear. "That's a movie, Stefon. What exactly is a 'Cocaine Bear'?" It's like that thing where Don, Jr.s scrubs all the blow from his beard onto Charlie Kirk's forehead, to see how much Lee Greenwood can do between loops of his one song.

I didn't know him when I was little, but I watched "Newhart" when in junior high, and then got into reruns of "The Bob newhart show" and his albums. And in high school, started getting really into standup. And the lightbulb clicked watching certain comics/actors from Cleese, Handey, Conway, Steven Wright, Bill Murray, most of the folks in "Airplane", and then after that comes Norm McDonald. And I could see the fingerprints on the delicate string from Newhart in the 1960's all the way to what was then the present for me (1990's). And of course, his legacy endures even larger today. I could wax nostalgic about Bob all night. But skip your next podcast and listen to this instead. It's Ron Bennington (of eponymous DJ show on XM radio). He hosts an in-person w/ audience show called "Unmasked." Famous comics come in and instead of the "who were your influences, how do you write jokes, etc." Ron really has a way of getting into the craft like nobody else. And Bob is so warm and endearing in it. Personal life to working with Jack Benny, to how he structured his albums, to how his big shows reflected him and vice-versa. Other than Carson, this is the best interview you'll hear with Newhart. It was about 6 years ago. Bob just opens up the floodgates and takes you behind 60 years of comedic brilliance. If you don't have time for the whole thing, skip to the last 5 minutes when he talks about Rickles and then piss yourself. Bye, Bob.

my god, she's dumbed than Brother John Bluto Blutarsky..... "Was it over when the Allies Stormed the Beach Communists?"

I'm looking at the bottom right, I think I see Nicole. My oldest loves to talk about all the tall buildings and "what that's name?" "Is that one gonna be a hotel?" "How will that one be compared to the Jenga building? We happened to be driving over the bridge by Rainey and the SE of the CBD today. And she started firing off questions that I used to know the answers to. But it was just one "I dunno" after another from me. Whenever we go on the Ladybird elevated trail or just the hike 'n bike, she still says, "I don't understand why you could look at that lake and buildings but instead they used that white building to print newspapers?" -Yeah sweetie, the city that won't grant us permits for months on end thought it'd be great to have one of the most prominent spots 'downtown' to be a windowless factory where they used---what's that---cadmium to print papers 9 feet from its most precious waterway. But you see, the paperboys had to stop by there to get their papers...so they carved out a bike lane to make it safe. And they haven's stopped making bike lanes ever since because .......ahhhhhh......what the hell were we talking about again?

Reminds me of that scene in "Harlem Nights" when Pryor and Murphy send that call-girl out to follow the bad guy's bag man. She tells him she wants to party with him. They go out for a drive and get pulled over by two cops (faked by Pryor and Murphy). They tell the bag man, "We've been looking for Lady Heroin for a long time. This girl's in a lotta trouble for smuggling." And the smitten bag man says, as the cops go back with the loot, "Look, just 'cause your name is Lady Heroin doesn't mean you have to go around selling the stuff." Mr. Raper. Whoah.

If Harris were to ascend to POTUS, the Senate remains 50/50. But as I understand it from ConLaw, Patty Murray as Pro Tem would be "President of the Senate" in name only, she basically runs the chamber day-to-day anyway in terms of floor logistics, while Schumer controls the votes/legislation. Meaning she cannot vast a vote as a "tie-breaker." She may cast her own as a duly elected Senator from the State of Washington. But she doesn't "Get" an extra vote on top of that to break a 50-50 tie. With 5 months still left of this Congress, that would make those "Independents" and moderates on either side the most critical Senators since the Civil War. Because there's literally no way to break a tie. Everything just stalls. Harris could still appoint a VP, there's just enough time to get that person through. But depending on who it is: 1. Does that person necessarily have to be Kamala's running mate? Can it just be somebody who can jump on the grenade to maintain Presidency of the Senate, spend a few months as VP cutting ribbons, and then be content to not be on the ticket and go back to being a House Rep. or even a Lt. Gov. of some solid blue state that doesn't have a 2024 cycle they need to campaign through? Maybe one of the lesser-known Cabinet members who has no ambition to run for high office down the road, and is promised a loyalty reward of a more cabinet position should Harris/XYZ win in November. 2. The GOP will delay any vote so as to maintain the 50/50 split as long as possible. But it's worth putting somebody out there who guarantees in writing on national television by some sort of election law affidavit, they will not appear on the 2024 ballot. they are just doing their patriotic duty to keep the Upper Chamber running smoothly until January, plus other cursory VP duties. Could put McConnell's minions in a tough spot. Particularly if it's a woman or person of color. 3. Or does she keep the VP spot vacant, pick a running mate, and that person just campaigns and doesn't bother with the Senate at all? Which could be trouble come November. 4. Risk appointing a VP replacement who is also the running mate as "extra prepared to hit the ground running in January", unlike Vance who has been a junior senator for 17 months. It's a gamble because that person could get fucked with by the McConnell folks at hearing. Or they could use it as the greatest free ad space in election history to beat down the dais. 5. Safe move would normally be. Appoint a new VP who will also be your running mate, and just let the GOP delay it all they want---don't fight it while looking like you're fighting it. Up until early voting starts. Trouble this cycle would be, Kamala and this new appointed VP/running mate are still both relatively unknown to the country. You can't wait until early voting, you gotta get the rest of America to know both of 'em and fast. It's the 50/50 split with nobody minding the store when EC certification comes around again on January 6th: 2025 Edition. That's the one that should worry you. -
Soft spot is a good way to put it. It went to crap a long time ago. Although I will say, the staff has actually improved post-Covid. But we have fond memories of biking down there and attacking that HH queso bar and a cold one or three. Never liked their chips, but their salsa fresca and queso were always solid. There's still a few above-average items on the menu if you know what you're doing. When they first got bought out, it was one thing. But the fact that it's now the people that brought us Longhorn Steakhouse is a bit of salt in the wound. I forget Darden owns Bahama Breeze. I remember when that place and Sam's Boat in "the Gateway District" or whatever the fuck douchey North Austin was called about 20-25 years ago. They were all the rage for about 18 months. But we were young, horny, and didn't care we might get towed from a Burger King parking lot to find Sam's Boat. After all these years, Chuy's can still deliver on a few things besides nostalgia. That's not nothing.

Maybe there were other rounds destined for his head, but he used his patented double ghost-jerk off move to deflect them away. Ever think of that libs?
