2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.
YGIFS replied to bolverk's topic in Cloak Room
$18/hour, no breaks, no meals, I gotta pay for my own transportation/parking, and I get heatstroke? WHERE DO I SIGN UP??????? I'm beyond not being shocked by this shit anymore. But I have to admit, I have robustly moved on to the "How the fuck did they workshop this shit?" phase. Like when you see your wife's curling iron and it says, "Do not use while sleeping or bathing." At some point, the sign just becomes another sign of stupidity. But you find yourself curious as the meeting that led to the label. "So we've got lots of social media buzz and registration from our MAGA regulars. But attendance won't be great, especially for TV. What if we, and hear me out, basically offer a financial package to non-MAGA diehards that wouldn't normally come out to the rally? It would be constructed so that after their personal expenses, they'd basically break even and a double-digit percentage of them will require medical attention that we won't pay for. Is that anything?" -
I think it was a veiled way to say "white privilege" a different way. Yeah, we should not judge athletes based on their attractiveness. But then, we don't run shoe companies or sports drinks companies. Alex Morgan and Coco Gauff get more money because they are objectively attractive to men and women alike. I don't make the rules of biology or marketing. And spoiler alert, Coco isn't getting paid because of "tall privilege", she's 5-9. To your point, not to be sexist. But Caitlin is not getting by on looks. She has a nice smile and some charisma, but she's not getting paid because she looks like Anna Kournicova or because she's getting 'tall privilege.' I'm assuming she'll probably command 10%+ more than a black athlete of her skill set would get on an endorsement deal. And that sucks, and I bet if people would just give her a chance, she'd probably try to help rectify that. But nope, the league has decided to shit on her instead. And again, I don't think most Americans realize how our Olympic squads get funded. Corporate partnerships and personal fundraising. It's not fair, but that's how our model is setup. We don't do state-funded national teams anymore. Caitlin coming in for 4 minutes at the end of the 2024 game versus Albania keeps eyeballs on the screen, and it raises millions upon millions of dollars for the 2028 squad in the interim. Oh wait, is this the part where we pretend Olympic basketball isn't about money?

I absolutely get that. Being straight is easier than being gay. Being white is easier than being black. Being pretty is easier than being ugly. There's parallel examples in almost every country all over the world. And yes, especially for me, life's easier being tall than being short. unless you're a super tall guy (6'6"+) or gal (6'2"+), in which case there are health ramifications. I've just never heard "Tall Privilege" used in the context of basketball. The rim is 10' up there, yeah---there's gonna be tall people playing the game. There are degrees of benefits to height in most sports, but to complain about "tall privilege" in literally the highest up game in all of sports, that just seemed like a weird stance to take. I'm sure she has complex opinions on why gymnasts and weightlifters are so short. "SHORT PRIVILEGE!"

Running Alt-Right Thread of Mockery and Hypocrisy
YGIFS replied to bad_teammate's topic in Cloak Room
the real nightmare fuel is how much more educated (albeit worse off economically because of the Great War), the average German was as to the average Louisianan or Nebraskan. there were obviously many other factors and timing at play, but yes---the parallels are quite disturbing. Only upside is Trump has over 30 years and 150 pounds on Hitler...plus Trump eats more ketchup-drenched deconstructed hamberders in a week than Hitler ate in hw whole life. -
It's fun as hell until the first time you're playing in the hole and you get kneed in the balls over and over again. Then the fun wanes and the competitiveness kicks in. It does get you in shape though. I was a pretty good swimmer and had a decent arm, but to just be constantly be turning on a dime to get back on defense or vice-versa, it's a grind. Never mind that you can't just put your hand on your hips or knees and catch your breath, you're constantly treading water during 'downtime' or being out of the play. Cal is a fantastic program (in addition to being a great school overall). A guy I played with in high school, his girlfriend was the IHSA (Illinois version of UIL) player of the year and she was the first goalkeeper to ever win it. She had an offer from Cal, but wanted to stay closer to home. IIRC, she ended up at some Big 10 school, we lost touch. Most people don't realize, it's certainly one of the more physically violent sports in all of female athletics. I mean, we used to scrape but they did just as much, probably more.
-
That dude's video is a bit on the condescending and misguided side, but a few questions... -I'm a pretty progressive cat. And I have never heard the term (2:00 mark) "Tall Privilege" in relation to sports. Last I checked the literal and figurative "goal" in basketball, is 10' off the ground. Seems to me, taller people would be better equipped to reach that "goal." Is there "Speed Privilege" in football or "Arm Privilege" in baseball? that's a new one, even for me. -I certainly believe there is some small component of race in Caitlin's draw to fans/sponsors in the game of professional basketball. I know that Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, et. al. only became the highest grossing athletes in NBA history because of their white privilege. -Just from a finance guy perspective, I just don't get the animosity. I mean, haze the rookie some...sure. compare paystubs, got it. But she is not the problem with your league. The quality of play is the problem, and she may be able to elevate it with her 'tallness.' She probably won't bail for Europe because her endorsement deals are where 80% of her income will come from and will be more U.S.-driven than anywhere else. But this just seems like such a weird monetary flex (or lack thereof). And the final dirty little secret, the NBA is annoyed as fuck with this shit. They're already floating a losing enterprise, now you want them to float a reality TV show with some basketball peppered in between?

This thread is bullshit. There's no systemic racism in America anymore. Just municipal racism. Totally different.

There's some recently revamped theaters in Austin that are certainly nicer than Alamo Drafthouse from a finish-out/aesthetic/cleanliness standpoint. I'm a sucker for Alamo because of the pre-show reels and the quiet policy and snacks. Yes, the way we watch movies has changed forever. Just like the way we shop, order food, do banking, or watch porn. In the 1980's and 1990's, it was constantly drilled into our heads that robots would take all the American jobs. In the 2010's, it was illegal immigrants. In the 2020's, it's A.I. Shit changes, ways of consumer behavior come and go, manufacturing and logistics alter on the hour. But one thing won't/can't change. Physical space. Some car dealer has 20 acres of Central Texas' largest inventory of Toyotas? Cool. Thanks for passing those costs and asphalt heat reflection on to me, I just need the one car. And I'll probably just order it myself and come and pick it up later. Your bank branch now has a coffee bar and the shortest drive-thru wait of any Capital One? Great, thanks for passing those costs along to me in the form of higher fees on my loan, I'll just deposit the check at home with my phone. Your newly renovated movie theater now has 8 screens with 200 seats each and an expanded concession stand and wine bar that all takes $1,000/day to keep cool and ventilate? Fantastic, I'm just watching the one movie. At home, with free drinks during a film for pennies on the dollar. 20,000 square foot newly redone AMC? Awesome. What the fuck are we supposed to do with it when it closes down? Another ACC?

Was talking to a neighbor yesterday whose daughter is really getting into hoops like mine. And he brought up the Olympic team deal. And I said, "I honestly had no idea who she was until a few months ago when my girl's teammates started talking about her at practice. If she looks up to her, cool with me. But I honestly don't get all the animosity towards her in the WNBA." And Jay said with a straight face, "Well, there's a lotta politics in the WNBA." And I thought to myself "WNBA Politics? Yeah, that's not a thing."

What year was that out of curiosity?

This thread is making white children feel bad about themselves. I suggest we remove it or burn it.

“You’re violating my Freedom of Breach!” -no, that says ‘Speech.’ ”Then something about zip ties or guns or I don’t have to talk to you in court “

Bleach Blonde Bad Built Butch Body in Congress? Oh you mean Marjorie!
YGIFS replied to Pancho's topic in Cloak Room
So every race and ethnicity has lazy and sorry people? Wow, Marjorie...this is groundbreaking research? You hurt yourself coming up with this historical scientific study? I'd tell you to publish in next month's "National Geographic" about commonalities across all peoples of the globe. But your neanderthal, yard-ape, clubfoot ass is already the subject of an article on page 37. -
Not every troop in the German Wermacht was an evil Nazi. It's an easy leap of logic, but that's now how armies are raised nor how wars are waged. Many are simply trying to either hold Northern France or retreat to safety and begin defending the Fatherland. I'm not excusing anyone, but that's just what's happening right now. But in 30 minutes, a Waffen SS company (of Germans, not the occupied, conscripted type) will be briefed on the reprisal mission for resistance activities and the death of SS Maj. Helmut Kampfe in Ouradur-sur-Glane, a village a few hours south of Normandy. The company will spend the next 24 hours murdering 700 villagers. They will shoot most of the men in the legs and then burn them alive. They will also torch an entire church full of women and children who had sought sanctuary in the town Cathedral. Only a handful will escape to tell the tale, some died days later of their wounds. Rommel formally condemns the mission, one of the many reasons he will choose a cyanide capsule in 14 weeks time. While many other atrocities are occurring all across the East, this one sticks out to many military historians. All across from Cherbourg to Calais, their German brothers are fighting for their lives and suffering heavy casualties---and they know it. And this Waffen SS full company spends the day burning innocent villagers alive in barns, schools, and churches. there's "following orders" and then there's ordering pure evil.

YGIFS replied to Pancho's topic in Cloak Room
I heard that Marjorie slept with Bill Lumbergh. -No, Ron Lumbergh. The Intetrode guy from her gym. Who'd you think it was, Bill Lumbergh. Their children would have hooves. Literal hooves. -
Dude, I get your frustration. But your last clip there is literally from 4 posts above yours. You're like the guy who wears the shirt of the counter-protest he's attending to watch his favorite band play.

Yeah, a good friend I knew had that awhile back and said it was excruciating. I'd rather use DDT than DEET, but Rachel Carson had to get all mouthy on us. I don't want to discount bird flu, but it's a statistical rarity. But mosquito borne illnesses are beyond commonplace all over the world, even here in America (we just better medicines/treatments to combat them). But just fucking blows me away in Texas after almost 30 years here, with all our humidity, people just leave empty planters/potters sitting out, kiddie pools, work buckets, etc. For months on end, just collecting rainwater, serving as nightclubs for mosquitoes. I try my best not to use chemicals in my yard because we're right next to a fair-sized creek and lots of kids/dogs in the 'hood. But people can just start with the most basic of shit, don't create pools of water for mosquito breeding. Really not that fucking hard. Full disclosure, I ate the bat in Wuhan. And during a Ortolan Bunting dinner, I may have started this latest Bird Flu.

You laugh, but a couple years ago...we're at my cousin's place in Dripping Springs for Easter brunch after church. They've got some neighbors over who are of a 'different' philosophical stripe. And he says something very similar to this, not exactly but pretty close. And this was back when I was drinking so I couldn't help myself. "Uh, we're in that salvation period where we thank Jesus. The Sunday of the Resurrection to the Sunday of Pentacost. It's 50 days." With no sense of irony, or knowledge, the dude says, "50 days isn't a month, 30 is!" Being stupid voluntarily should be a sin.

A story about a pathetic man's downfall [34 Felony Convictions]
YGIFS replied to Francisco 2.0's topic in Cloak Room
That's a good point, Pato (and others). He's got to have at least triple-digit words and sounds that are totally made up by him alone in his lexicon by now. And that's just what we see publicly when he's tanned, tested, and ready. There's actually a speech therapy sub-study where they measure the 'made-up' vocabulary of everybody from toddlers to 100yo stroke victims. It ranges from the child just says "cupcape" instead of "cupcake" to completely unheard of terminology. But there are ways in which they can kinda, sorta reconstruct their language to discern what that person means. Like the person will seemingly be speaking jibberish to you or I, but there is still a an adjective, a noun, a verb, etc. in there, properly constructed if you can follow the pattern after several sessions. It's not a popular focus in their field because it's really fucking hard scientifically. And, as most of us know in our person lives that a small child, or special needs young person, or elderly relative that cannot effectively communicate their thoughts or needs often becomes very frustrated. They can get extremely reclusive/withdrawn, very angry, confused, disassociated, or just downright depressed. So the therapist not only has the manage the therapy, but also the client's emotions and that of their families/caregivers. This fucking assclown speaks like a toddler or a stroke victim, and instead of exhibiting all the usual psychological/behavioral symptoms of someone with obvious vocabulary, syntax, and pronunciation challenges. He is proud of it because thousands of people applaud it every time he does it. He continues to defy almost all reason or logic. -
A story about a pathetic man's downfall [34 Felony Convictions]
YGIFS replied to Francisco 2.0's topic in Cloak Room
I don't know why it's so fucking hard to find, but I watched it live on CNN so it's not like it's some antiquated b-roll tape from 1970's PBS. But of all the speeches and interviews he's give, teleprompter or improvised, the one that really made me believe he was going downhill was the White House Rose Garden and this would have been late 2020 or early 2021. I'm guessing Autumn 2020 because everybody was dressed normally (no winter gear). And he had several reps from Big Pharma there to give a yuge update on vaccination efforts. And yeah, some of the CEO's have differently sounding names. But from announcing the guests to his brief remarks, I don't think he nailed a single syllable in about 120 seconds. It was not tele-prompted but he did have the names of the people on a paper at his podium, but the rest was ad lib in terms of remarks. It remains the oddest display of his issues to me to this day, but I can't find the clip anymore. I showed it to my wife and her partner (they are Speech-Language Therapists). And her partner fucking hates Trump more than all of us combined. Anyway, it prompted them, for shits 'n giggles, to workup a study of Trump's active v. passive vocabulary because they have to do this for some of their clients for cognitive, medical, educational purposes. In their industry, they have a very solid, decades proven sampling model (obviously they can't sit and listen to a child or stroke victim speak for a month). Now vocabulary and grammar are not the only indicators of intelligence. And there are articulation and physical factors at play in our speech obviously. But the average American adult is going to have an active vocabulary of about 20,000 words and a passive of about 40,000 words. After they had some grad interns look some hours of tape of his, they estimated he has about half of that. One of a dozen signs we've all noted indicates that he is likely of slightly below average intelligence. /csb -
Assemble there, yes. Be loud, be graphic, be passionate, yes. But smokebombs and flares that close to the White House? I don't make the rules, but if they're trying to provoke a brutal reprisal from police and secret service, this is a good way to start, and it will completely distract from their message. Some asshole is gonna blend in with them and pretend to be involved in the setting off of flares and smokebombs, only it'll be something far more dangerous with a farther range. This may very well end up poorly for all involved. Not saying to ban them from protesting, I've walked that area hundreds of times over the years...there's always folks out there being loud---some of whom I agree with. There's obviously no firearms allowed. Every now and again, I've seen somebody light a firecracker or some shit to gain attention (or they're just crazy). Smokebombs are a big risk and not a safe idea. But flares are just batshit stupid, somebody doing that is gonna end up getting hurt and then there'll be a protest about the protestors being unable to protest. But there are other incendiary devices that we're not gonna list out here for legal reasons, that somebody can bring down there and blend in with, that can reach the actual grounds of the White House. And then all hell breaks loose. But in this fucking simulation, who the fuck knows?

it's only wrong because Trump has no idea what fruit is. -
Pos rep. the hair similarity is uncanny. Though something tells me Miss Putin is not quite as funny as Amy Sedaris. Though there is a tv show idea in here, "Russians with Candy." The season finale is Vlad dies, a Russian general offers her some candy. Vorontsova, "Hey, this chocolate tasted kinda weird." General, "I don't know anything about that." and she dies from poison, and we are laughing...

In no way is anybody here hoping our team loses. We aren't the psycho assholes who whined about that Simone Biles "bailed on her country" because she wasn't feeling cognitively/balance correct and didn't feel like snapping her neck last games. Those are the other guys. If Caitlin didn't even go to the camp (I don't know all the backstory), then yeah-they can tell all her fans to go pound sand. I was just bringing up the point on how much money they could raise heading into our home games in 2028 for the sport. They'll be fine on the court, either way. Unless of course, there's an East German "Women's" team being formulated right now I don't know about.
