The GQP: Trumpist Death Cult
I guess I was too busy looking at Valerie Bertinelli's tits to notice Dwayne obviously had a heroin problem. Blows me away that Jim Breuer, Rob Schneider, and Larry TCG are booking big gigs based on beyond stale material combined with whining about 'cancel culture.' I mean Louis and Jerry and Burr talk about it, and it's a valid point...but they have this other thing going for them called 'being funny.' It's a weird world in comedy when you watch Carrot Top now and think, "You know, he's not that edgy. I enjoy it."

2023 Thread of Racism in America
The grace with which he handles the awkward situation is only overshadowed by despite him giving her a half-dozen verbal and body language cues that she's dead wrong, she doesn't change her fucking beat at all. I don't know that she's racist, not my place to say. But he clearly gives her some outs and some clues, but she just keeps fucking going. All racists are dipshits. But sometimes people are just dipshits without being racist. Take me, for instance.

Steve Bannon Indicted
Roger Stone appearing as the moral high ground to Steve Bannon on the fucking Alex Jones show? And I gotta drop my kids off at Vacation Bible School tomorrow and pretend we're not in a computer simulation? I mean, honestly...I'm losing my edge the last couple years...was that a bit by Stone or was that real?

Ken Paxton is dirty? NO FUCKING WAY!
Me banging the chick in the red shirt while Paxton walks in shocked, "Just avert your eye, Ken! No, your other eye. Singular. Plural. Dammit, just go away!"

D-Day - 75th Anniversary
Damnit, I'm not crying. Y'all are crying. France, the U.S., Ukraine, Canada, Britain, all those other countries all represented. Please, please, please Lord...let this last large gathering of the Allied Expeditionary Force veterans be a reminder of what we need to preserve and not revert back to our old bullshit. I don't want to see just 9 of 'em in another 5 years looking around at us thinking "How'd you guys fuck this up this much?" It is now 0100hrs in Normandy. The Higgins' will continue to ferry reinforcements, but once they can see clearly in the night sky a very curious continued lack of Luftwaffe presence, the LCT boats will really start to move artillery and armor to the landing zones under cover of night as the paths are cleared. As the old saying goes, "A Panzer is worth 4 Shermans, but the Americans had 5." Well, it is at this hour on 7 June, that the 5th ones start to arrive. 20% of the City of Caen is on fire however. For most of the Allied troops and airmen, this will be their second night in a row without sleep. Village however, after village, continue to be liberated on the way to the first big one-Bayeux.

The GQP: Trumpist Death Cult
Well, sir. If R.S. doesn't get the laughs from the VIP's at the RNC then we'll be SOL and put on KP. -K.P., Airman? Yessir, the former VP's S.O., Karen Pence.

D-Day - 75th Anniversary
I've been to several national cemeteries and buried several veteran relatives with full service. But only seen the images of the Normandy site through photographs and videos. And it is such a weird feeling. It is so anguishing to see how many, but it looks so beautiful, but such a cost of young life, and in the end-the mission achieved, but there's bodies under those headstones. Most of them glad to have done what they did to liberate the Western World. It is such a mixed bag of emotions. I'm not crying, you're crying!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Austin -- We are losing this place
Yep, 1866. I'm almost certain the German Texan Heritage Society a few blocks over, that building had a private drinking room in 1858...but Scholz's was the first truly "public eatery & bar", though it mostly just an isolated gathering place for German immigrants at the time. Since I am of German-Hispanic heritage, my daughter did a cool project (that I admittedly helped with) about how for a long time, German and Spanish were spoken far more broadly in Texas than English...particularly in Central to South (a bit of Czech, too). And now, most "native" white Texans can barely speak English properly. We're all (plus City Council/Project Connect/et. al.) to blame when an old Austin institution goes away. But bloody hell, if Scholz's ever goes........I'm gonna cut a bitch.

D-Day - 75th Anniversary
As I said, the memorials the French do each year to mark this day are remarkable and emotional. As their elders die off, they simply do not allow the younger generations to forget how close they were to living under the thumb of the Reich, for centuries. They can do plaques or not do plaques, who gives a shit. But they treat those gravesites and those landing sites as sacred as any Cathedral. You wanna go down a D-Day rabbit hole on the internet tonight, take a look at what the Vichy French are up 80 years ago today.

No, I do all my own yardwork. But I did ask him to take a look at my rash and to borrow his bike lock. I felt like Tom Hanks in that "Black Jeopardy" MAGA sketch a few years back. "Now Jimmy fixed my refrigerator, my truck, and my cat for $40"

Well yeah, on here. But not in real life. Literally this week, the physician at the end of my street texted me to ask for some equipment and chorin' help because he said, and I quote, "You seem like a wheel-barrow kinda guy."

You know all the years I've seen this clip....you're right. It looks like it's from the MTV graphic design department, like you're expecting them to cutaway to Kurt Loder at any moment, "Narcissistic Sociopath is our next guest to discuss Manhattan real estate and the best music to jerk off two invisible ghosts to after these messages from Pepsi and Chess King."

I don't get why the gun thing is a big deal when there's so much more flavor to the other ramifications of his dozens of convictions? He hasn't handled a weapon since high school. Never went hunting, that thing that alpha-men, pro 2-A types do. Never shot at a range. Never registered to buy a firearm after graduating. And oh yeah, spoiler alert. Presidents and former Presidents aren't allowed to even touch a firearm by decree of Secret Service. They're spinning their wheels on this non-starter. He can't fucking have one anyway. Focus on the fun shit. Like the tradition of a photograph of every Presidential candidate at an election booth pulling the lever. But this time, it'll be Donald sitting in the lobby of some elementary school while Melania goes in and votes for Biden.

Yeah, this place can certainly be just the same level of echo-chamber as FoxNews. I'm still all over the place politically as are my network of friends and colleagues, and I run with a lot of political folks here in Austin and even on my street of all stripes. And I've berated this point before. What we all forget sometimes is yeah, we've got naive liberal friends/relatives and conned conservative friends/relatives. But I look at the diversity of just my little neighborhood of 100 homes and our kids' elementary school parent groups and my wife's parish. It's pretty diverse for Austin in terms of color and politics and values. But the differentiator (and I'm something of the village idiot) is that they are all extraordinarily well educated and well informed. We hang out on this thread and wax poetic but we forget that so much of this country is beyond fucking stupid and in the dark, and proud of it. I'm the dumbest fucking guy on my street and I have three degrees and read more political news in a day from viable outlets than 99% of America reads in a month. So we're our own echo chamber in a way too. We're not elites, we just have the benefit of education and time. And that informs things differently. Next week, we are hosting at our academy for students of color that are first in their family to attend college. They will hear from very prominent Republicans. very prominent Democrats. And I will try not to drink.
