2024 Presidential Election Thread - Let's keep the party going.
YGIFS replied to bolverk's topic in Cloak Room
There was a pretty high-up guy in our entourage who is gay. Kinda open, kinda closeted if that makes sense. He's just in that age bracket where he feels he can't quite be one or the other, depending on the audience (50-55yo). Did a lot with UT System on projects with Dept. of Energy, Dept. of Education, and Dept. of Defense. So we're having drinks and we've completed our higher-level FBI backgrounds but they'll still be asking us shit tomorrow (like about drugs), and he brought up a good point. We were talking about old spy movies where the bad guys would try to steal our nuclear or weapons secrets by finding a closeted gay guy to squeeze for intel under threat of outing him to his superiors. And how that was a really serious avenue for both sides for decades. And now, it doesn't even come up. He said, he was once in D.C. and to clear the air he told the interviewer, "Just to be up front, I'm also homosexual." Guy laughed and said, "There's 40 people in your group...it'd be weird if you didn't have a gay person on your team. Then we'd think you were really hiding something." -
,,,as well as a correspondingly low amount of bikini-clad beachgoers running to his tent to see how awesome he is to party with.

When I was part of a large contingent from UT System as they bid to run for Alamos with DoE (i was a back row bit player). One of the first things they briefed us on was we'd have to take a drug test just to see certain things and advance our application, and if advanced-concede to ongoing random drug tests. I don't use any recreational drugs, but being one of the younger members of the group-one of the dudes paused on me and said, "Is everyone okay with that? This includes being in the immediate vicinity of exhaled smoke of these types of drugs!" And I got all freaked out because I remembered I was at ACL the weekend before and pretty much everyone around was smoking non-stop. But that was the situation back then (this was 2017 or 2018 IIRC). Never mind the fact that most of us were still legally drunk that morning from an off-site group dinner and post drinks. That was totally fine with them, just no weed. -
Being a genuine biracial person-first, anecdotally. I have a distant cousin on Mom's side who did excruciating research for years (it ended up becoming a published book both here and Iberia). Mom and I got our 23&me back years ago, he was 95% spot-on through old school techniques. On Dad's side, he and his Aunt did similar research in the 1970's overseas and in the Midwest. His side of my 23&me came back with 95% accuracy. It was kinda cool to see all their work so long ago have margin-of-error level accuracy in today's technological environment. What is not kinda cool to see is the Harris situation here in Texas/on this board. I expected this from MAGA politicians throwing red meat at their base. I expect a guy in North Dakota or Mississippi who've never traveled 100 miles from their hometown to believe this shit. But to not suddenly understand 'bi-racial' in Texas? I honestly don't get it. Is is just political convenience? A lot of Trump voters on here live in large Texas MSA's, they are educated, they travel for work both domestically and internationally. Presumably vacation in a similar fashion. They live, work, and travel among bi-racial people every single day of their lives, but this week-the concept escapes them? How is this concept all of the sudden such a difficult one for otherwise 'exposed' Texans? They are more racially mixed people in Texas than there are left-handed people, or people over 6'1", or people born with 0- blood. When you see a taller southpaw guy filling out paperwork to donate blood, do you just run over in hysterics, "You can't donate blood, we don't know what you are. You have to be just the one thing!"

Hi, I'm Kamala. And this my running mate, Andy. And my other running mate, Andy. Somebody remind me why the ABC moderating the debate, if it happens, a non-starter? I get that Trump doesn't want them running the show. But are they just "up" next in the rotation? Can't they just step aside for PBS or CNN or something? If they're the reason, the rest of the nation can't see the "real Trump", don't have they have a journalistic obligation to just get the fuck outta the way so the debate can occur? -
"Non-consensual couch fucking, Senator?" -Yeah, you know that tag on the bottom of every sofa or mattress that says "This tag may only be removed by owner of couch"??? "Yes, Senator. I've seen those." -See, once you remove that, you own her. So it's always consensual. She legally can't say 'No.'

Then I rise now to ask another dumb question. How do I export them to a file? I'm in chrome, I drop down the bookmarks tab up top, nothing about exporting or files or anything. Just my bookmark tabs and related sites listed out in a different style. -
America, "Look at his stance, all wrong. Wrong caliber weapon for that kinda distance. Needs to sight-up better. Just all kinds of wrong here." Turkish Guy, "I'm sorry...I can't hear you over the awesomeness of this shiny silver medal given to be the Planet Earth. Tell me more about how you placed 8th in your county skeet shooting competition once."

"What's that smell?" -Oh, that would be me. I've been swimming in raw sewage. I love it. I love it!" (Lnielsen, 1992 Silver medalist, triathlon)

Yeah, on my mom's side (Hispanic), it's an unhealthy combination of cultural plus deflection when it came to pressuring one another to keep drinking. My mom (who doesn't drink) just never realized it. I didn't realize it until I was in my 30's. She buried 3 brothers for whom alcohol played a large part as well as two nephews. That was the cultural part. The deflection part is she also didn't see the pattern in female family members. 2 nieces and almost her daughter (thank the Lord almost). It's a big, big family (9 siblings, 23 cousins, 30+ next generation, etc.). Most of them drink responsibly or not at all. Thankfully, we are spread out all over the country so we're not constantly getting together to cause either stress/family induced binging or "it's tradition" type of pressure. I'm kind of an outlier. I certainly have the disease, but it wasn't really family influenced (kinda left the hive where most of 'em were when I went off to college). I never felt the need to prove my manhood or overly-celebrate holidays. It was ten years of just chemical conversation, "I don't like all this shit in my head at 4:00p, I want it to be midnight! (poof!)" Speaking of my wife's family, they are staunch Midwestern Rural Catholics. Some of them didn't know until I told them years ago at a holiday gathering that Jesus was a Jew. And they also didn't realize there were a lot more alcoholics in their family than they cared to admit. I knew of several of them, "A Fisherman Always Sees Another Fisherman from Afar" kinda thing. But they're just now unpacking that from grandpa to two uncles to several cousins, lotta alcoholics around. Hardest working and kindest people I'll ever know. And for several of them, the thought process is simply, "I work hard, if I wanna kick back and imbibe...I'm gonna!" Not my place to analyze, but I think many others noticed this trait in some of their kin but didn't really know what they were observing, just different. So many of them for years would just not partake because (their line, not mine), "It's a waste of money. You spend $20 on alcohol one night, and you got nothing to show for it in the morning." Valid point, but I noticed when I offer you a beer or a glass of wine, you gladly take and enjoy it. I think many of them saw what was going on around them growing up and figured that was a good way to softly deflect over-indulging. Just like recovery, the way we figure out the equation of why and how much we drank is unique. But the chemical (both mental and physical) addiction remains the same. Looking back, I'm glad I was not constantly berated by family to "just be a man, it's how our family has done it for years!" I had enough excuses in my arsenal as it was. And this late in life though, I still gotta deal with some relatives who think this is "just a phase." Don't let it bother us, so long as they don't make a scene in front of your kids and strangers. I'm starting to realize, not that I have it all figured it out yet, that yeah, It's projection about their own shit guised as "C'mon, this how our family celebrates!" If it was a glass of champagne at graduation, or a glass of wine with dinner, or a beer by the grill.....that'd be just fine. But it's not, our "family tradition" is to have that one celebratory drink, followed by 9 more.

first car I remember riding in, I was about 3.5-4yo. My mom's brown 1978 Buick LeSabre sedan. Texas A&M fired their horrible coach mid-season in 1978, and they finished 7th outta 8 in hoops. Back in a time when College Station was considered 'cosmopolitan' for East Texas. Back when we measured that brown tank's fuel economy not by the miles per gallon, but how many cigarette butts would accumulate in the two front ashtrays. Usually 40 had to accumulate (2 packs) which meant it was time to stop of and refuel, and buy more Winstons.

Which SS broke Ozzie Smith's run of 13 consecutive gold gloves? Follow-up on SS...which player played the most consecutive innings in a row at SS? Games started doesn't matter, and remember if the guy played 3B or DH somewhere in there, even for just a game, his count restarts. Consecutive games doesn't matter. When he played in the game, who has the longest inning streak of just playing SS?

Synching Chrome Bookmarks to move to new computer
YGIFS replied to YGIFS's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
See, I can't even complete that step. It allowed me to moved everything else that i customized about the browser except bookmarks. I only have about 100 or so, but I really don't feel like re-entering them manually if I don't have to. Even for my tech-illiterate ass, this seems oddly difficult and every single google/chrome tutorial already assumes you magically have them in a portable file or in your cloud account. Just seems like a weird sticking point. -
Yes, Mark...you were certainly 'cut from a different cloth.' My elementary school gym class parachute. Why, of all people, and why now during the Games...would you choose to throw Simone Biles and her 'monkeybars' under the bus like that? When it comes to both sports and politics, Mark.......shut up and eat fat man.

I think it was his sly attempt at some dark humor at his own expense, but it was horribly delivered and not funny to begin with.

0:24, "And I heard the scientists say the other day that when a man votes for a woman, he actually transitions into a woman. Yeah, that's what the scientists say." I can't tell if he was doing a bit, because the video cuts off, but either way---there's at least another few hundred thousand people walking around today thinking that's true. -
I went to a microbrewery once named the Tainted Vomito. It was like a Waffle House bathroom after Sturgis opened up a tasting room. It’s weird IRL, the smell of any liquor or wine at the table I’m at doesn’t really register with me anymore. But beer kinda bugs me. We were at the SEC kickoff party and folks are having all kinds of cocktails in the heat and didn’t phase me. But one guy at end of the table kept leaving bricks ‘cause they were free and getting tepid. And that smell just rubbed me sideways. We had to move back inside until t staff cleared the empties. It was half trigger event, half dry heave. Weird.

You just made the list, pal!
-
He’s a homebuilder by trade so I think it’s just in his bones to exaggerate by nature. Kinda like the realtor who insists every listing is “just minutes from downtown.” Yeah, that used to work in Austin before google maps and we became the fastest growing big city in the nation. Large, multi-levelparking garages not in the CBD which, in their best day are 25% of capacity. Just giant radiators is all they serve as
-
I'm surprised the listing service let them get away with that. One of our neighbors built a 'casita' that they want to rent out in the summers (big mistake in Austin, nobody comes here in July/August). Anyway, they listed it as having a "lap" pool. The pool is at its longest point, 30'. And that's into a staircase. That's not a lap pool, it's just a pool.
-
Yeah, I'm thinking about that. But my wife reminded me, that kinda proactive "take-aside" can also make her just as pissy, particularly since she'll already be 3 drinks in when we even arrive. "I know you're in recovery honey, I would never expect you to drink with us." And then walk away mumbling under her breath about how I wasn't fun anymore on her way to the fridge/bar. That would make a longer, more tense day. the toast as the party winds down would be quick, but as you say---in front of everybody after she's about 8-10 drinks into the day. Anyway, we all go through this at various points. But she's kinda like my last 'obstacle' in terms of social pressure to drink. My shit is my shit to work. But yeah, she's certainly projecting something about herself she doesn't want to admit, but that's her path. But if I can get through this and the holidays around them, and she finally gets the message after two years.....I honestly, and thankfully, can't really think of anybody else to whom it would even occur that I wasn't drinking anything harder than Waterloo or Iced Tea. I guess she's the final boss in my social situation sobriety video game

All of this. I had one really annoying guy early on that was lording it over my head, even telling mutual colleagues/friends about, because he had a beef with me related to work stuff. 99% of the time people are indifferent, as I've pleasantly found out. But one thing I am dreading is the person you're describing above. Got another round of annual test results back recently. We're making a hint of progress, but not as much as we were hoping for considering last relapse was a really long time ago. And overall health has gotten so much better. But he gave it to me as the, "Keep this progress up and you can live somewhat normally. But you know you're in the one more drink, and it's 50/50 chance at lights out phase." So next weekend is my cousin (who is like a sister to me), her daughter's college graduation party (like a niece to me). And her and her husband, wonderful people, they've still not grasped I am totally done. Not just pacing myself or waiting to get back on the party train. They just offer rivers of booze to whomever enters their home, and a college graduation party will no different. I have been to literally hundreds of events, fundraisers, parties, games, etc. where either nobody offered me or asked what I'd drink, and I reply 'sparkling water.' Easy-peasy. But my cousin is just in a constant state of looking to be affronted. Just looking for slights to get upset about. She'll go months without talking to me, or her sister, or neighbors who didn't want to sit and listen to her drunken tirades or dared to offer up an opinion on some issue different than hers. So all that to say, I can see it now. They'll raise a toast to their daughter, and insist that I have a drink to mark the special occasion. I'll discretely decline. She'll insist again, and I'll say "I'm good, to the newest Red Raider alum!" And it'll just eat away at her all fucking day and I'll get blamed for ruining the vibe. Sounds hyperbolic, but she effectively did the same think two Thanksgivings ago when I politely turned down wine for the prayer, and she got all pissy about, "You do you, but we're hosting so take a fucking glass." And I said something sideways and I got calls from my mother asking why I was being so disrepectful. I can't take her aside and tell her, "I'm in the one more drink and I could die phase, so no thank you." She'd get the message, but she'd also call my mother as soon as we left and worry the fuck outta my mom from now until 2025. For awhile it was my half-sister and her problem with alcohol that would routinely insist I stay up later with her friends in Chicago and keep drinking. She finally came to terms with it about 3 years ago, thankfully. And now it's my cousin, who is a sloppy drunk 5nights/week. She's a wonderful mother and employee and doesn't day drink (she's a dead giveaway when she's had more than 2, got about a half-dozen tells). They're havig us over for this party and then for Christmas (along with mom and sisters and nephew). She's running outta people to listen to her drunken ramblings and she knows it. Not my place to judge, I just want her to shut the fuck up come toast time. I don't need my mom carrying this around. Mom knows I quit, knows I had a few relapses, but am on a better path now. She doesn't drink, so that helps. All my other family and friends either quietly support me or don't even notice. Except for Cousin Loudmouth. God Bless her.

Synching Chrome Bookmarks to move to new computer
YGIFS posted a topic in Can You Help Me With This?
I'm sure it's easy and I'm the idiot (as usual). Switching from MacBook to a PC for work. I have everything I need under my gmail work account synched up in the cloud (email, calendars, docs, etc.). Online tutorials are not helping. I need to first synch all the bookmarks (I guess) from desktop chrome to my portable gmail account? I don't know how to do that. And then, assuming I can download a clean chrome browser on the new PC, how do I migrate all of that to the new browser? Thanks. -
Tootie should let Blair know she really let herself go. Physically and mentally. Is that a fucking bathrobe?

Oh, there's an October Surprise. You eat the whole hotdish on 29 Sep. You spend all of 30 Sep on the ground crying in pain. And on 1 Oct, you'll be surprised at the fleet of Nordic portions of your colon pass through your butthole.
