I'm reading and hearing a lot of thinking around the notion that Michigan "held a lot back" against Fresno.
I can follow that from the defensive perspective and agree. Fine. I also know that Martindale is going to blitz ridiculous amount of time and he's very likely to do it a bunch with Barham, the Maryland LB transfer. They think he's a great blitzer, so that is a Martindale wet dream. Ewers' numbers when blitzed drop off historically, so that adds to that interest. I expect to see plenty of mugged fronts and weird looks before a few drop back and 1 or 2 come from different places until Ewers handles it. Not incredibly bold to think that.
Now, on offense, I'm interested in understanding what in the fuck they were holding back. They tried shit with Orji, they were breaking in new players everywhere (including a new QB), they barely led 13-3 after 3 quarters. They weren't holding back a fucking thing. That was an offense trying to figure out how to play together and also get a win.
I'm assuming this will be a close game, but I'm also not sure how Michigan is going to score barring short fields via turnover. They're slow at WR, they're inexperienced at QB and OL, they have a big name back that looks pedestrian, and then you have the star TE that isn't a secret. They're going to sustain a bunch of drives because Texas lacks Sweat and Murphy? Okay.
Just caught up on this thread, and have been thinking this the whole time. This isn't some high flying offensive team with a wild playbook that they're sitting on. Their complete offense is pretty vanilla, what are we expecting them to unleash?

Blue Jays are getting a lot of hype for some reason. Seems like its most likely between them and the Dodgers, have also heard Braves or back to Angels mentioned

Volpe, Gleyber, Rizzo, Judge, Soto, Stanton, Dominguez after he comes back from injury, Verdugo, DJL, Austin Wells. Oh and Cole and the Yamamoto guy from Japan at the top of the rotation. Get off the fucking tracks when the train comes through

Gave up next to nothing of importance for one of the best 3 or 4 players in baseball. Gotta spend the money to keep him now.
Yep. Thorpe is apparently a stud prospect. Was named top pitching prospect across the minors in 2023, but never pitched above AA. King has always been solid, but not anyone I'll ever miss. The others, take em.
Love to see it even if it is just pushing in the chips for 2024 (hopefully more moves to come, too). Definitely gonna need to give him the bank after this year to keep him, but get it done

Quite the prospect hall right
Thorpe is the best prospect in the deal. never seen him pitch, so can't say much but he was named best pitcher throughout the whole minors so if he makes it should be good. King is the biggest short term get. Has been consistently solid in the bullpen, and moved into the rotation late last season bc of injuries and killed it
Always have liked Higgy, but he isn't really anything other than a fine catcher that pops a homer every once in a while. The other two pitchers get called up for starts every once in a while to mixed results

Soto and Grisham to the yanks for Michael King, Kyle Higashioka, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez.
Great deal for the yankees, just gotta lock him back up after the season

So twisters used to be called cyclones and the Iowa State mascot is the cardinal because Iowans picked cyclones, again now called twisters whereas cyclones refer to tropical storms (not typically a problem in the Midwest), but they couldn't figure out how to depict tornadoes (née cyclones) and the cardinal was red like the school colors, so ... herr derr close enough.
Tldr;
Iowa State is dumb and fucking sucks and is getting destroyed tonight.
...mmmmmmwhat?

Younger brother is headed down from Boston for the KState game and looking for some Austin BBQ recos (not going to spend the time to wait in Franklin-type lines). I gave him most of the standards, anything else I should put on his radar that hits the right balance of great bbq + not killing half a day? Haven't been in austin full time in a while, so not up on many of the newer spots

Tap in? Okay, I’ll take the points. Im not talking shit. Im calling it like I see it, and frankly everyone I know sees it the same way, but Surly sees it differently. Your obnoxious take is a guy that is 6-1 with 13 TDs and 3 INTs with a 164 rating and literally the highest ranked recruit ever should be scrapped in the midst of a 7-1 season because you saw a few things you liked out of a complete project. That sentiment prevails here.
Im prob getting negged because I’m not providing the requisite preambles here that I understand MM is a redshirt freshman, etc. I understand that. This isn’t last year. We have a chance to win the conference champ and cannot wait on MM to develop. I understand this isn’t his fault but your hot take is particularly ridiculous.
+1. Maalik showed me enough that I feel good about him for as long as he needs to play. Once Quinn is health enough to go, he's back. Hopefully for Iowa State at latest.
As far as this bet goes, my heart is with @ztejas. My brain is with @Jewish Wang. I stopped laying points with texas a long time ago because i try to bet with my brain. it generally works in my favor.

I had to take the kid to the park for a bit and was watching the score on my phone. Did we have a touchdown that got taken off the scoreboard in the third maybe early fourth quarter?
Could've been the wheel to Brooks that was initially called a tuddy but got reviewed and put on the 2. Only thing i can think of.

Would love to know what some of you dumb fucks though MM was going to do today. It's the guys first start. He's a backup for a reason. He got it done and we won by damn near 30 points.
Did you think he was about to fill in for 2-3 weeks and win a heisman? god damn

It's not often that you watch a full game frustrated as hell, and then look at the scoreboard and you've won by 29 points. A ton of ugly spots, and a lot that needs to be worked on. But we're in a pretty good place if we can look at a win by almost 30 and not feel fucking fantastic about it
Happy with how Maalik looked. took a few mph off of the short passes which needed to be done. A few beauts. The turnovers weren't pretty. I'd put a lot of the int on the miscommunication/early snap + pressure. And the fumble wouldn't have happened if Brooks/RG didn't fuck each other up and that dude was blocked.
Red zone/goal line is the biggest thing that needs to be fixed. Bit our ass against OU. clearly wasn't going to be a difference maker in this game, but can't have 1st & G inside the 5 and come up empty once a game, let alone twice. Eventually, those points are going to lose us a game. Either figure out how to pump it into the endzone or take the three. I do wonder if they were being careful with Maalik and doing whatever possible to avoid injury because if there's a QB out there that I think could get across the line inside the 2, he is the prototype.
29 point win. Good stuff. Am i fully confident about KSU next week? fuck no. Do I think that we have more talent and should win that game. Fuck yes. Still control our destiny from what I can tell. Take care of business. win out, win the big 12 and I think we're in. If they leave us out then we can come back here in a few months and bitch and whine about how the committee fucked us and chose ____ instead.
