  1. Theo is a good kid who Lil’ Nigel has played against for about 7 years. His interview is good insight into how different the MLB draft is compared to the NFL. HS players are not drafted unless a deal is cut. The teams know the player’s number and if the team meets it, they will be drafted.
  2. Coaches want to work for who hires them. This is an important reason Schloss is at Texas now. Alberts was his new boss, not who hired him. Augie told Schloss that you don’t want to work for Patterson. So, if he took it, his boss sucks. If boss is replaced, he wouldn’t know who his boss would be. Then, in comes Perrin, who is a temp. Seems like wise advice and a wise (non) move.
  3. Lil’ Nigel’s team played them last season. Orogbo was the best defensive player we saw. His name seems like it was called every freaking play.
  4. Knowing his reputation, one of lil’ Nigel’s summer teammates was being recruited by Tenn. among others. I am used to seeing plenty of coaches at the big tournaments, but I looked over to see a coach in Vol gear. When I realized that it was Vitello, everything became clear, the issues with his teams, chirping, chippy, smack talking, getting tossed from games, it all became clear. He is short, like Lord Farquad, short. It made perfect sense.
  5. Seems like a lot of extremes on this thread that make people dig in on one side or another (welcome to Surly). Pierce has issues to deal with internally that are not performance related. However, Pierce has issues that are performance and trajectory related as well. These issues can coexist. At the time there was a lot of whistling past the graveyard when Schloss went to A&M. He is the real deal. There is also a correlation between when he came to A&M and when UT's trajectory started downward. I have mentioned before that lil' Nigel was recruited by both, as were teammates. It is no surprise at all that the programs are where they are right now. UT is still a playoff team with some talent. But A&M redshirted a couple of kids that would have started for UT this year. So, to sum up: the extreme sides on here are both right and both wrong. It's a combination of things.
  6. Again, the current "state of the program" is correct, but the focus here is way too much on the on-field performance.
  7. Not really. It would not necessarily be in the public eye, and I say that because it's not. Many on here are assuming this is soley a performance-based situation. UT isn't "looking for a reason." This is a public university of the state, meaning, there is a very specific process that has to be followed for an institution like UT handle things properly. Those mentioning a variety of things involved other than performance are on the right track.
  8. You can believe what I just posted. I am not going to make a “claim” if I happen to know some things that happened. You said because there was a meeting we would know because it would be leaked. That is wrong. There was a prior meeting where nothing was leaked and you probably wouldn’t believe the events of said meeting.
  9. You know what else hasn’t been leaked by those same individuals? Everything that has happened behind the scenes this year. It is not pretty. Several on here know what’s been happening, just because it hasn’t been “leaked” doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. It is quite disfunctional. But, you don’t have to believe it.
  10. First, I had heard a few things. This weekend I had them confirmed in greater detail. It is disfunctional and there are things in play that point to a change being made. Not a prediction, just based on what I have heard. Second, coaches want to play for the AD who hired them. There is a reason UT had trouble in the hiring process before and it is not Perrine’s fault. Most coaches are not going to feel good about being hired by an interim AD and not knowing who their ultimate boss will be.
  11. This. I have mentioned before that Little Nigel was recruited by both (albeit lightly). It is not surprising at all the success Schloss is having. He is a better, more persistent recruiter. UT’s decline in the past three years can, in part, be tied to A&M’s rise. A&M has projected MLB 1st round draft picks in their 1-2-3 hitters. UT is not there.
  12. We have been talking about this for several years now, but is this is the first step toward college athletics (mostly revenue generating sports) being “clubs” whereby the brand and facilities are being licensed out and the school collects a large royalty without having to manage athlete payroll, etc.?
  13. Been following this thread since TOS and I would appreciate any suggestions. Little Nigel is graduating high school this week and I would like to give him his first watch as a graduation gift. He is playing football and running track in college so I would like to get him something sporty that is nice enough to wear most anywhere but that he could run routes, catch passes in as well (I know much of that has to do with the band). Would like to keep it in the hundreds but can go higher than that if it is worth it. Tissot, Citizen, Hamilton, etc. are where I am starting. Thank y’all for any help!
  14. Little Nigel beat Sanchez in the 100m and lost to him in the 200m, but he was a big, mature bodied kid. I mentioned before that schools are looking for mature bodies that are ready right now, that would be Sanchez. He has very good speed.
  15. For what it’s worth, little Nigel played against a 5* and several 4*s last season. Without question, the player that made the biggest impact (like having his name called almost every freaking play) was Smith Orogbo. I am not projecting, or saying he will be the best prospect, but in terms of playmaking and making a noticeable difference on the field, he stood out.
  16. It's things like that that make football recruiting so much easier to navigate than baseball. Football is done much more out in the open. Schools, fans, athletes, can all see which players are being offered/recruited by which school. In baseball, all of that is taboo, and it makes the recruiting process brutally difficult.
  17. He is starting to get to the age where he prefers how the bat is weighted (whether he realizes it or not). Generally, CATs are end weighted (usually what powers hitters prefer) vs Balanced, which is more evenly distributed. That can help make the decision for him.
  18. Nothing CTJ said do I disagree with. Having just completed this whole process, I could go on for days about this stuff. A couple of things that became obvious to me. First, coaches are looking for players who are physically ready RIGHT NOW. These are the kids who when you see them, they look like they are physically 30 years old. Sure, they have to project positions like OL and DL more than others, but they want mature bodies now (this may be even more so in baseball). Second, you are at the whim of the evaluating person in "the system" and all their good and bad traits/qualities. A lot of preconceived notions of the evaluators simply will not be overcome. This can be infuriating because, like it or not, it is part of the system, and it affects the player. Yes, stars matter, absolutely. But it is still a crap shoot because they can't dig deeply into backgrounds. Percentages say that 4* and 5* are more likely to pay off and they do. Coaches who are good evaluators will have a mix of 2-5*, even though fans complain that they are taking "bread." Smaller schools will be between unrated and 3*. Fans complain all the time about the services, recruiting evaluators, etc., but at the same time believe the bigger "system." It's a pretty interesting dynamic.
  19. Wow. That is some serious spin. Dizzying.
  20. Couple of thoughts here. First: The high school format is significantly more expensive because they spread it out. But they don’t really play more. You go to Dallas, Atalanta, Hoover, and play one game Wed., Thurs., Fri., and keep going back to the hotel for the remainder of the day. It can be frustrating. Second: the kids play more and it’s almost always too much. Burnout shows up in a variety of ways and it is prevalent.
  21. Exactly. If I can't answer that, how can anyone else? We were very clear from the start for him to do his best to "see through" the recruitment. It's sales. It's his (and our) job to try to see the best school for him that also fits well with football. If you base things on how well a staff recruited you, there is a really good chance that you will not go to the best place for you. We told him that it shouldn't matter if the school that is the best combo of school and football wasn't the best recruitment. The best choice may be the school that was 5th best recruiting you. I am well aware that we are a minority among the recruited families in this line of thinking. I could go for days about recruiting services, the head scratching dance of how to get rated, etc. Again, even among the "experts" it's 50/50.
