  1. A few more things...

    • Alamo Rent A Car had unlimited mileage and free drops in different cities.  Check the travel aggregators for a rate and then check Alamo directly.   It was a good bit cheaper.
    • Book the smallest car you can comfortably fit into...  They'll put you in a bigger car anyways.  Fuel is expensive and in the Highlands/Islands range is your friend.  Not to mention the roads are laughably tight.
    • Here's a cute one...  the speed limit signs don't have the unit of measure on them, being in the UK I figured it was KPH, and was careful around traffic cameras and in small towns, then I noticed the car's Odometer was set to MPH...  So I was pissed.  I mentioned it to a local and apparently the speed limits are in MPH not KPH  so all good... no tickets in the mail for me... suck it Italy!
    • Consider the full insurance protection plan, if going into the highlands...  According to the lady at our car rental return  75% of the cars coming back from the Highlands need at least 1 new tire. (seemed outrageous, but she VERY carefully checked all the tires)  When asked her about it she said UK rules for rental companies are very strict and ANY gouge of the sidewall has to be replaced.   I drove pretty gingerly and still hit plenty of stuff on the sides of their narrow ass roads.
    • You'll want more times on the islands than you think.

I think you need to spend a couple days in and around Inverness. Not that I've ever been, but I might have the chance to buy a cottage there in the future, so I'd love a ton of pics and maybe some reviews of the city, and surrounding hamlets and the pub options, what the wather is like, etc.

    Thanks in Advance.

Mcleod's Fish & Chips - there can be only one!

When we were passing through we stopped in and were the only gringos around. One order of fish and chips is plenty for two.  Good food, local vibe, you'll smell like fish n' chips till you shower

Monday: head to Oban, and then Iona (spending a night there - it’s an ancient religious community, very much on my wife’s list).

Tuesday or Wednesday: head up the coast to the Isle of Skye. Spend two days there.

Maybe we do something else after Skye? Maybe we should be flexible on the Lake District idea? We figure we need to end back up in Glasgow or Edinburgh, where we can drop the car and catch a flight home (we’re flying BA, so it’ll be a short flight to LHR, then the direct to AUS).

We’re not wedded to the schedule. We’ll start in London for sure, but maybe only one full day there. We know that a drive north, a stop in Lanark, Glasgow, Oban, Iona, and Skye will need to happen. Otherwise…appreciate any pointers.

    • Sounds like a great trip.  I'd consider doing your loop and then catching a flight from Inverness out
    • imho You need to be making reservations NOW
    •  You can take the ferry from Mull Tobermory => Kilchoan  then from Maillaig => Armdale on Skye (it's a nice drive)
      • Make reservations for the ferry (Especially from Oban => Craignure) Be sure to inlcude the CAR...  the prime spots do fill up and will limit your options  https://www.calmac.co.uk/
    • Stuff to make your trip more interesting...

  3. I'm sorry to welcome you all to the pain/outrage S. Florida has been feeling for years prior to Uvalde.  I told my kids after MSD, the student walk outs, pushing for meaningful gun control, and police policies would change nothing.  Just talk till the nation lost focus and moved on until the next heartbreaking shooting.  Unless when they turn 18 they vote in every election and make sure all of their friends do too.  Uvalde kids will have to wait a lot longer to change things.  Those poor kids and families.

This news while important will revictimize parents and loved ones and simultaneously galvanize resolve to resist change by others.

    sucks

and the wine crowd. Or the hot Dog people.

I can visualize this cohort sitting amongst a sea of carts, snot nosed kids, grumpy retirees, and various bulk refrigerated/frozen goods warming up and a long hot car ride away from the fridge.

I forgot to mention another movie that came out when I was high school and had a profound impact on me as a teenage boy: Wild Things (1998).  I know I never turned it off when I saw it on HBO, Denise Richards was right up there with Shannon Elizabeth on the list of iconic hot chicks of the late 90s.

oh man, that one scene. Pretty sure that impacted just about everyone.

I had a co-worker who is a Vietnam vet.  He was shot twice and stabbed once while there.  He had a shingles episode that he said hurt worse than all three wounds combined.  That episode nearly blinded his left eye.  The doctors were worried that the virus would travel up his optic nerve into his brain and cause damage there, but it did not, thank God.

We, of course, told him that anyone who got wounded three times couldn't possibly have a brain, so he was in no danger there.

It's been my experience even the manliest of men who have had shingles get a little animated talking about the experience.  One of my father's friends is a commercial fisherman, he famously lost some fingers working the wench on a haul siene, he just put the fingers in the fish box and kept going till his guys dragged him to the hospital.   He doesn't talk about that, but will tell you about his bout of shingles!

That shingles shot is no joke. Sorest shoulder and worst general feeling like shit I ever had after a vax.

yeah but universally better than the shingles.

csb: The nurse who was gave me the shot told me the symptoms would be rough, but then she shared that for her 50th B-day she was getting the shingles vax.  Evidently she had worked in a clinic and her experience with pain management in shingles patients meant she was going to ANYTHING to avoid getting them, including spending her birthday feeling a bit low.

    How is Old School rapey?

I was thinking about that too.  I'm not sure if it was explicit in the movie, but the main character slept with a High school girl who may have been under 18...  That's rape.  But I don't remember if the movie just said she was in high school or a minor.

Wife has a 2017 CRV with 110k miles and the only issue we've had is a plastic piece that's part of the air intake developed a tear.

Good to hear, my daughter's just passed the 60k mark...  fingers crossed.

What the fuck happened to Honda automobiles? I purchased a 2024 CRV Hybrid Sport. The thing has 1,100 miles on it and I'm awaiting the arrival of the tow truck to take it to the dealer. The thing started knocking yesterday. There is a lawsuit about the previous generation of CRVs with the 1.5L for oil dilution. They released a software flash, but some of them are shitting out with as little as 50-70k miles. Honda just released a massive 250k vehicle recall on Ridgelines, Pilots, etc for faulty engine bearings. Mine began knocking with 1,100 measly miles. I should've went with the Rav4, fuck me right?

https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2022/honda-oil-dilution-problems-class-action-lawsuit.shtml#:~:text=November 24%2C 2022 — Honda oil dilution problems,Accord vehicles allegedly stall and suffer engine failures.

I bought low mileage off lease CRVs for my teens when they turned 16.   My son got an '09 and my daughter got a '16.   I helped each one change out the stereo to a Carplay unit with navigation and upgrade the speakers etc.  Taught them how to change the oil, windshield wipers, air filters, and brake pads (so they knew their way around the car a little bit)  I can tell you the quality fall off from my son's 09 to the '16 is amazing.  Just one example, the tabs that hold the door panels to the doors changed from 5 metal tabs with metal screws to 3 glued in plastic ones.  The clips that hold interior panels have fewer clips or connection points.   I get that you can simplify manufacturing and make improvements to something that's over built, but everything about his 09 feels much better built.

I adore Bill and Ted and almost listed it but it doesn't quite feel like a "high school" movie for me. Sure, they're in high school, but outside of Bill and Ted the other main characters aren't high school kids and it doesn't take place at their high school at all except like the very last scene.

    Those are valid points.

CSB:   It just so happens that in high school a friend and I both decided to go see a movie Bill & Ted's on a random Thursday night.  We mentioned it to a few folks and told them to meet us there.  Everyone we talked to was like "sure I think I can make it, mind if I invite so and so?"   yeah, no problem, the more the merrier.  Meet in the parking lot at 8.

When we pulled up it seemed like the whole school was hanging out in the theatre parking lot like some sort of shitty tailgate.

The theatre was PACKED and that weird random movie turned out to be funny as shit.   Just some lightning in a bottle thing.   So it's absolutely a high school movie to me.
