My first interaction with a Floridian in Florida was during Spring Break of my sophomore year of college when I and some friends were driving to Ft. Lauderdale to catch a cruise ship to the Bahamas.  We pulled into a gas station off the highway late at night in a rural part of the state, and as I'm filling up my car a redneck at the pump next to me asks where we're headed.  I tell him, "Ft. Lauderdale," to which he responds nonchalantly like he's giving me helpful information like the weather forecast, "There are a lot of n----rs down there."  I say nothing, get in my car, and tell my friends, "Let's get the fuck out of here."

In Florida, the further north you go the deeper south you get.  You hear crazy stories about S Florida but nothing can match the insanity of N Florida.

RIP the White Eagle Lounge and Gun range.  I forget the details around their Happy Hour, I think it was along the lines of $.25 drafts and 1/2 price ammo.

You can just imagine what the "White Eagle" looked like.

  2. Made some Jollof rice that ended up borderline too hot.   I think I got a hot batch of habaneros, anyway, It tastes good but have been eating it pretty slowly because of the heat.  Full under eye sweat after 3 bites.

The other day I decided I needed to dilute it down a bit.  I fried up an egg and diced ham, and put it on the rice with a dollop of Sour Cream.  This might be cultural sacrilege, but it's tasty as hell.

I would ignore any source that thinks the heart of SEC country is in North Carolina and South Florida.

There are more Gators than Canes in S Florida.  The Canes have Dade county and that's about it.

  5. Have a '72 Fj pics are somewhere on here or the old Shaggy.  It's a franken truck with a Chevy 350 and god only knows what welded up rear axle.   I need to get it going again, during covid I tried to get some of the original gauges functioning again and fried the whole cluster.  The dull poof, smoke,  and smell of ozone is a subtle yet convincing sign you done fucked up.

I think I'm gonna get the whole thing rewired.

That new Landcruiser if it gets the green light and will be my new ride.

Biden seems to be still, more or less, on the "help but don't help too much because nukes are scary."

Which is EXACTLY what he should be doing.  I support Ukraine, but I also support the continued existence of mankind.  So yeah, that's the play.  If this was similar to Kuwait/Iraq it would be different, but less oil and more nukes.

I've probably asked this before but is there any chance our defense/intel/state communities have decided that dragging this out somehow benefits the US? I feel like that is China's position on the flip side, it is possible we think the same?

Gotta give all that TB time to work!

Eh, Vinegaard was clearly better in the high mountains, wasn't super close. That said, I think Pog could have ridden the race overall better and been able to maybe win.

I think Vinegaard caught Pog on a bad day and punished him.   Jumbo was the better team and carried Vinegaard. IMO

The occasional small town dive bar in Texas that allows smoking indoors gives a picture of how it used to be.

I remember going out when smoking was allowed everywhere and you just had to put up with it as a non-smoker. I don't miss that.

You ought to try that as an asthmatic.  Fuck smokers, sorry they are addicted, but back in the day they were real assholes about smoking when and wherever they wanted.  As smoking was being restricted in the 80's, I remember being out somewhere that smoking wasn't allowed and a guy asks my father if he minded if they smoked.  My father said actually I do mind, my son has asthma.  The guy pulled out a cigarette and lit it up and indignantly said "I was only asking to be polite!"

An yeah smoking flights were a lot of fun.

True...this is the note we got recently. It made me warm and fuzzy.

    Dear Boomer Neighbors,

Thanks so much for the gift card. What am I gonna do with that? Buy half a tank of gas to pollute the world some more? Fascists.

Whatever. I'm off to throw paint on some stupid museum art.

    Sincerely,

    Gen Z Bruh

People who conflate Boomers with Gen Xers...  Sure we get fucked over by the boomers and the echo boomers, but we're doing with more style and grace than either of them.

He dumbs things down for the 99% of people who aren't the geopolitical nerds like we have here.  Sure it's a bit oversimplfied, but still effective.  He went mainstream when Russia invaded in 2022 and we all discovered his presentations on Youtube.  Those much better than the "pop geopolitics" vids he makes today.  And FWIW, one of his talks was in front of a group of US military folks.  (Looked like mid-level officers?)  So he must have some good insight.

One of his "what if's" talked about how the Mexican drug lord problem has commonalities with Afganistan's tribal war lords.  He wasn't advocating for a US miltary intervention, but suggesting we have good expertise that can be drawn on.  Good stuff.

Going by the video posted above he doesn't know what's happening in the actual state/country he lives in, forgive me if I doubt his ability to project real valuable insight across the globe.

All I get from this guy are con man vibes.  He's monetizing talking.  So he has interesting things to say whether those things are true or not. Like the TB claim in the video posted above. "Most (Russian) teenagers have TB"

Here's what the NIH says about TB in Russia "In Russia and the former Soviet Union, TB has been an acute problem. Today, the official estimate of the incidence of TB is about 82 to 83 per 100,000 population."

    He is an entertainer.

Zeihan called out exactly what the Russians would do 10 years ago. He has been nails predicting geopolitics in general, and the Russians specifically. You might not like his style (the hair needs to go imo) but you're dead wrong if you think he doesn't know what he's talking about or think he's a hack.

This presentation was in 2014 and he nailed it:

Ho lee shit, did you even watch the video you posted?    Laughably bad. I was pleased to learn that the US is the ONLY country that will meet it's Kyoto protocols obligations.   Dude's big talent is looking at a map and talking about it in a pedantic way.  These are mountains, you can't move an army easily over mountains, deserts don't support big populations, this is a choo choo track goods move efficiently here... oh shit this guy has it all figured out!

oh here's a blurb from his wiki page...  Yup you guessed it, he wrote a book about maps and terrain features.

    Quote

In 2014 he released Accidental Superpower. The book was reviewed by The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Kirkus Reviews.[8][11][12] The book focused on topographical and geographical landmarks (rivers, oceans, mountains, etc.) as distinct advantages in a nation's ability to dominate others economically, industrially, and militarily. With the use of maps, Zeihan pointed out that navigable rivers, or access to the oceans, along with a reliable road or rail network make a critical difference.[8] Another three books were published afterwards including The Absent Superpower (2017), Disunited Nations (2020), and The End of the World Is Just the Beginning (2022).

If you want a good book about the real world effects of geography (and actual analysis) I recommend Guns, Germs, and Steel.

I was watching some of Zeihan's videos and on one of them about the Ukrainian offensive he talks about the attack on the Kerch Strait bridge.  He outright speculates that we might have done it.

Did I miss something?  We wouldn't have seriously done that, right?

The part were Zeihan's videos are worthless.

    I don't have a problem with evangelicals.

I have a problem with those who have abandoned anything resembling Christ in favor of Trump.

Which is, sadly, most of them. Once you require people to deny basic facts in order to be part of their club (evolutionary theory in particular, but anything from The Fundamentals - "you must accept these as true no matter what the facts say"), then you can get them to accept any lies you want.

    Sagan said it best

"Claims that cannot be tested, assertions immune to disproof are veridically worthless, whatever value they may have in inspiring us or in exciting our sense of wonder...."

  14. The thing I'm enjoying most is that I think he is starting to understand he's in real jeopardy.  The increasingly frantic and impotent screeching to his base is just a bonus.

During the Obama years I always wondered how much more money the Rednecks had to keep buying ammo, That donor base of his has to tap out soon right?

Maybe not "stupid" but certainly not "smart".  Consider the fact that UPenn has never conferred an honorary degree on Trump, nor have they asked him to speak at any commencement ceremonies.  Consider that in his day, the school accepted 40% of applicants, far more than the current 7%.  Consider that one of his professors (William Kelley) has repeatedly stated that Trump was "the dumbest goddamned student I ever had".  Consider that his degree is in real estate, a field he has struggled in mightily over the years, despite his claims to the contrary.  Consider that the commencement program when he graduated listed honors for all students (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) and he did not attain any of those standards.  Consider that he was never on the UPenn Dean's List.  Consider the fact that Trump directed his attorney Michael Cohen to threaten his high school, UPenn, and the College Board to never release his grades or test scores.

Sorry, he's of average intelligence at the very best.

I wasn't implying he was smart.    What I was trying to get across is that sheer pugnacious assholery is more likely to explain his position in American history than his intellect or lack thereof.  You can't just dismiss that he sat in the oval office for 4 years.  I hate that bastard, but he has accomplishments.  Hopefully first imprisoned former US president will be among them.

Eh, think about that co-worker of yours who is really fucking smart.  You recognize it, right?  So if you're a dumbass like a huge percentage of Republican voters, Trump need only be mildly more intelligent than them for them to think he's "smart", even if he objectively isn't.

I don't think the guy is an idiot, I think that he's so toxic that people will literally give ground to get away from interacting with him.  Except those broken people who equate that with power.  They see him being awful to the people they dislike while he says wonderful things about them.  (until he no longer needs them)  And they think proximity to this guy will personally enrich them.

I had a neighbor like this...  really successful business guy, but just an insufferable prick who would make unreasonable demands that people would capitulate to to avoid having to deal with him.  He would brag about it.  "If they don't give me what I want I'll bury them in litigation. They don't know who they are fucking with!"  There were a few neighbors who hung around him for a while because he had the latest super/hypercars and had an entourage of east european hookers.   In the end ever person in his life was only there on a transactional basis.   /csb

tl/dr Not stupid just toxic and broken
