  1. I just went looking, according to THT it was a 7-8ft day.  No anchor out as it came into the beach according to eye witness.  Most popular reply "What's that big metal thing on the front of the bow for?rolleyes.gif"

How much experience owning or running these kinds of boats do you have?

Anchor windlass will not operate since the fire suppression system killed its power source. Good luck getting someone up on the bow to pull the pin to manually drop in rough seas without getting someone seriously injured. If they even had time for that. Soft sand with that size boat you’re going to have a tough time even holding anchor if you do get it to drop. Unless you have some facts not in this thread then questioning the competence of anyone involved here is really reaching.

    Well,

20+ years ago when I got my 6pack & tow endorsement I already had 25 years of boating experience.  Small sail boats to 45' powerboats and everything in between.   Never owned a boat that size, but the LOA isn't the issue.  Clearly they got an anchor out whether they drug it ashore or panicked in the breakers and dropped it (more likely).

I also know that area well.  There are several reefs the furthest out being ~120' on the deep side.  Heavy surf would crumble on the 2nd reef and wouldn't break until 1st reef.  It's runs from ~90 on the back side to ~35 ish at front of the 1st reef.  It would have been much calmer there, It's sand bottom but with enough scope they should have held.  Unless they were running after a cold front and we haven't had a strong one yet, the surf there is going to be < 10'.   Hell they would have snagged the 1st reef on the way in.   They had time to get hooked up.

Also this was Delray beach not the Horn of Africa one call to Seatow or BoatUS and I would expect the response time to be <30 mins.  Those boys sit in the inlets waiting.

But I wasn't there, I don't know the sea conditions, I don't know what equipment they did have at their disposal.  But for damned sure they should have had more than 1 anchor and the ability to use it with out power or a cell phone!

If it was rough out that makes it worse imho, If I'm running a boat in sporty conditions I'm keeping my distance from land.   Maybe they were picking their way through an inlet and shit went sideways at the worst possible time IDK

Been following this on Qualified Captain.  Bent rudder and props.  Caused by fire suppression system shutting the engines down.

Did fire suppression kill the anchor too?   Because if you're not taking on water and you are adrift and nearing (lets say within 1/4 mile) the shore, you drop anchor and wait for Boat US/Sea Tow.

Like I said, that boat doesn't hit the beach intact with anyone competent at the helm.

I mean, my post you quoted I said it needs new running gear. What happened is the definition of a soft grounding with a boat that size. New props, shafts, rudder, trim tabs, etc. is a dent in their annual maintenance budget. Plus it’s insured. No big deal at all. Fire suppression system may be a bigger issue depending on if there was actually a fire or not.

Yeah actually that's my bad.   I just interpreted your post to mean there's no serious damage and he'll be heading back out to Abaco in a week.  That boat is going to be in the yard for a bit.

I do wonder about the insurance though, it's negligence that boat ended up on the beach.  Did the Capt or owner say how it happened?   Because my guess is that someone set the auto pilot coming back from the Bahamas and fell asleep or was otherwise distracted.   No way that boat ends up on the beach with someone competent and/or paying attention.

I've been enthralled by battleships since i was a kid. Lee at Guadacanal is one of my favorite accounts of the pacific theater. Being an Olympian in rifle shooting, then going on to run a battleship division like a calvaryman charging on horseback with pistols blazing.... fucking awesome

a little off topic, I saw a documentry that had a fleeting line in it about US tactics in ww2.  IIRC it was a British historian talking about war doctrine and how the Europeans (by tradition or naivete) thought you couldn't assault land based fortifications from ships.  He then proceeds to state that US did just exactly that thing to great effect in the Pacific and the British navy types were stunned.

It might have been in this one somewhere.   Worth a watch if your into Pacific ww2 stuff

$150K is mice nuts on a $10M boat.

Yes, I know how math works.  You did see the > sign right?  My point was that was NOT a soft grounding.  She's sitting on her running gear. The damage is likely to be much more extensive than it looks.

Hate seeing that. Fortunately that soft sand on the beach won’t really cause very much damage. New running gear and clean out the intakes and it’ll be good to go.

That's wildly optimistic.  Bent shafts, rudder damage, paint, etc... it looks like she's been rolling around in the surf a little bit.  I'd go with >$150k  not counting the tow/hard ungrounding and perhaps fees from FWC.

I love this game. The music hasn't changed, but you have; sometimes, you discover depth you didn't realize was there.

Biggest shock for me was rediscovering Duran Duran's Rio. There's some incredible depth to that record. It has aged well.

    great song

It's too fancy for the shank thread,  but Sam the cooking guy has a garlic bread pizza recipe on his youtubes that fucking slams. I salute all incarnations of the garlic bread pizza.

?   It's got 6 items not counting the seasonings and one of those is department store sauce.

Is there a mushroom shortage(cue you know who joke/nocr) I'm unaware of?

    Looks good, would slam.

The blank spots were wher the pepperoni should have gone.  But, I sliced up the mushrooms, cleaned the knife and cutting board, opened the Tupperware holding the leftover pepperonis and they had gone bad.  So just cheese and mushroom.  I wasn't going to get them dirty for 2 more mushrooms, but your criticism is valid.

The baguette is from a local little french patisserie, great olive oil, good full fat low moisture had shredded mozzarella, and homemade sautéed mushrooms in garlic and herbs.   Flavor is not the problem.

PS if you have good pizza dough, its actually faster to make a full pizza and less fiddley.   But I'm not sure there's a better use for stale baguettes you didn't finish.

    Looks like it would hurt.

nope, if you put the sauce on a little think it softens the baguette up more than you think.  I'm not saying you won't lose any skin on the roof of your mouth, but if you do, you deserve it for eating it with an oven mit.

  13. x post from Random thoughts thread

tl/dr stale baguettes are not a problem, they're an opportunity

    1. Take the day old stale baguette and cut it in half between the top and bottom (like you're going to make a sub)
    2. Brush with olive oil and season with italian seasoning
    3. Bake on 400 for ~ 10 mins
    4. spoon on pasta sauce
    5. optional - shake on good quality pepper flakes (Flat iron pepper co FTMFW)
    6. "sprinkle" with mozarella
    7. top with sliced sautéed mushrooms & Peperoni
    8. Bake for another 10 mins with convection til cheese is melted and it looks fucking delicious

    1. Yup 100%
    2. I never said she was wearing panties

Saw CMST at the beach several times.  Tiny bikini and thong.  She's hot, but I'm not missing out.  How would you like to be accused of perving out on your young daughter's teacher?  No thanks!
