  1. The Omaha World Herald had a great series last year about the neighborhood he grew up in. Sayers, Bob Gibson, Bob Boozer, Ron Boone, Marlin Briscoe, and Johnny Rogers all came out of the same few blocks in a 10 year span, and were coached by Gibson’s older brother

The original settlers were religious nutjobs who were not welcome in their relatively progressive/metropolitan countries.  I know that's not a patriotic thing to say, but I'm not feeling very patriotic right now.

Being settled by criminals generally looks like a better starting point.

    Really?  How so?

It looked like Hillary was going to be elected, remember?  Until she wasn't.  So, explain your tactics.

When you’re already well into your 70’s with multiple bouts with cancer and you have a friendly Senate and President, it might be time retire in favor of someone who can continue your legacy instead of rolling the dice that you’ll continue to beat increasing odds. Scalia got lucky that Mitch bailed him out.

  4. I realize the obvious thing here is Traces of Texas which I’m sure everyone here already follows. (Even I as a non-Texan enjoy it) but what else do you follow for bits of history and enjoyment? I follow accounts that tweet pictures of dive bars from across the United States, non-standard McDonalds, abandoned race tracks and google street views of post offices. I also engage and contribute content to an account dedicated to locating the location of every football that hosted high school football in the state of Nebraska, and one dedicated to Nebraska High School Sports history.

The sports ratings these past few months are really confusing to me.  Every sport is down and down considerably.

I wrote off the NBA and NFL due to social issues but for CFB to be down so far as well is really surprising.  You can argue 40% of the major conferences are missing however I’m shocked the remaining demand didn’t offset the smaller supply.

When you add in that even non-live sports related shows such as Last Chance U and Hard Knocks viewers are off 50%+ it’s like there’s little demand for sports at all anymore.

It’s probably a better discussion for a different thread but I can’t make sense of any of it.

I think a lot of it is that they are off calendar and still far from normal if they are being played. Even watching on TV the crowd is part of the deal, and I think a lot of people find the fake crowd noise plenty off putting. I haven't watched near as much baseball as I usually do just because it seems so weird. Being in the stands for the K-State game was ok at first, but it just got progressively stranger as it went on. Overall, my sense is the desire for a diminished overall product(in the competitive and normal fan experience) is not as high as one would think.

  6. As a Nebraska resident who is about to drive down to MHK to watch the Cats play football, I’d just like to say that I hope sitting out the fall would help everyone develop a healthier relationship with football, but it’s just going to make things dumber.

I’m torn on this subject. I definitely think that in some cases student athletes are not paid their fair market value but they absolutely are getting compensated. With how much education costs have gone up in the last 10 years, the scholarship is compensation. You cannot tell me that a female gymnast from Stanford that earns an education worth 250k or more is not compensated. In fact, as an 18-22 year old I would argue that is better compensation that she could get anywhere else in the market. A male tennis player at Texas is definitely getting above market compensation for his talents by getting a free education. On the other hand, I’m quite certain Trevor Lawrence is not getting full market value by not being allowed to sign an endorsement deal. Like most topics there is probably not a one answer for all student athletes on this subject..

The NCAA decision to allow people to opt in or out voluntarily without any lost eligibility was the right answer. One of very few correct decisions they have made in recent years.

I always enjoy the argument that education costs have skyrocketed, so they should be happy with the scholarship value, instead of thinking that maybe we should take action to make education more affordable for everyone, and then we could bitch less that players would like to have a greater share of the revenue they generate
