If the team is winning, nothing. If we suck, and it's a handful of benchwarmers, nobody cares If we suck, and it's our top players, some grumbling online If we suck, and it's the majority of the team, a lot of grumbling online and donors withholding money and questioning CDC and administration to show institutional support for our cherished alma mater

When they had the engine out they did the engine dyno and it was peak 354 HP @ 4800 RPM and peak 402 ft-lbs @ 4500 RPM. Haven't put the whole car on yet to see how it does. We'll see on the shroud - I ended up pulling the rad for the bigger one b/c the shop couldn't find a pre-mad shroud for the existing aftermarket radiator, they were going to have to fabricate one, and the expense of the custom shroud vs. the new factory-fit radiator and stock shroud were close, so why not.

Cuda update! I finally got it back after about 7 months in the shop. COVID slowed stuff down, especially we had to wait on some parts longer than expected. Full list of what we did: Pulled the engine (383) out and sent it up to WCH Racing Engines in Midlothian for a full rebuild: bored, new pistons, rings, valve and springs, gaskets, cam - everything. They crated it and sent it back basically a fresh engine. While the engine was out, repainted the engine bay to match the body color - also did some minor metal work around the firewall where there was some corrosion Replaced the stock torsion bars w/ Hotchkis bars appropriate for the big block Replaced the brake lines with new stainless lines Replaced the master cylinder Pulled the steering box and sent it to FirmFeel for a rebuild, with tighter gearing Replaced the idler and pitman arm with a fast ratio arm - much tighter steering! Took a full revolution out of the wheel from lock to lock Added a FiTech TBFI system 2 new fuel pumps (one high pressure to feed the FiTech, one lower pressure to grab from the tank) New air cleaner Added a VintageAir A/C system Relocated the battery to the truck and installed a bypass switch for both security and if it's going to sit for any period of time New MSD distributor New high displacement water pump New Hedman headers, required to fit the fast ratio pitman arm Shaved the lip in the rear quarters where it risks cutting the tires since I have really wide tires on this thing Installed the MSD box to get it to talk to the factory tach, which we later found out doesn't work and needs to be replaced Probably other stuff I'm forgetting I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! However, we've now discovered that the cooling system can't handle the heat load. The prior own had a 22" crossflow radiator. My 1970 Cuda shop manual suggests that a 383 w/ a 727 trans and A/C comes with a 26" radiator. It's been a little scary - it cools find as-is when I'm going down the highway, holds between 190-205. But when I'm at a light, it shoots up - FAST. I was going to QT to get some gas the other day and it went up over 250, not good. When it gets that hot, the starter doesn't want to turn over on restarts b/c it's also overheated. So, I have a 26" Griffin radiator on order from Summit, plus a fan shroud, and we're also going to wrap the headers, and put in a hood to radiator and hood to cowl seal. Hopefully that will solve the heat issue!

Wait, what? That’s some surly 1% shit right there. That’s not even a humblebrag, that’s a straight up brag.

It takes a pretty strong level of cognitive dissonance to rally to the defense of The Eyes of Texas because of tradition, while simultaneously railing against the Longhorn Band because...it's outdated? Hypocrisy much?

https://www.texastribune.org/2020/06/12/ut-austin-football-players-buildings-racism/ "In addition to demands specific to the athletics department, athletes also want UT officials to rename campus buildings ... and discontinue the school song, “The Eyes of Texas,”" You're refuting arguments no one is making. The players have always had the choice to sing the Eyes. Even when it was "policy," many of them stood around and that was fine, I've been on these boards for years and have never seen a post where someone was upset that a player wasn't belting it out at volume. It is about the players abandoning the fans and tradition of coming together after the game. However that may not be b/c they don't like The Eyes. It's probably b/c they're embarrassed about their poor performance on the field or just don't care. And yes, that failure of expectation setting is on the Coach and the AD. Also: inflammatory statements like "white victimhood" and "furious old white guys" noted. Interesting how we haven't seen our mods castigate those words, just "woke."

The insinuation that "the recruits" won't come to Texas because of The Eyes is a canard. Every Southern school has a litany of connections to racists in their past, from their founders, to boosters, alumni, institutions, building names, and more. If this were driving recruit behavior, then it would be Boston College, Rutgers, and the HBCU's winning national championships and not Alabama and Clemson. Recruits go where they can win and show off their skills to the NFL on the biggest stage. Texas will always be one of the biggest stages on the strength of our history and alumni base. Sure, it will be used against us as negative recruiting, but so is every controversy - real or imagined. The bigger issue for recruiting will be a lame duck hotseat coach who is clearly on the way out. Let's not confuse the issues, even in the '80s, Texas teams fielded great talent (poor coaching), better than most of our competition. We have the preconditions for football greatness, and what we need is administration and coaching to support that. I think that we have the right admin in CDC. We have the wrong coach in Herman, which will get fixed either this year or next. White people can't tell Black people how to feel. White people should shut up and listen. White people don't get to participate in the conversation about what is considered racist. All of these may be true. Where it breaks is when it comes to action. White people can listen and listen and listen, empathize, and atone for sins of their grand-forefathers by feeling really, really bad. But what happens when the person sitting across the table now want actions that are incompatible with your belief system? What if I were a minority and told @bad_teammate that his posts really offended me, and aside from feeling bad, he needed to show action to truly repent by deleting his account and never posting here again? Again, he's not my race and I am the oppressed here, so he doesn't get to tell me how to feel, and I am demanding action, otherwise - he's racist! Maybe he tells me to pound sand? He's not deleting his account, I'm the unreasonable one. WTG, racist. Or maybe he wants to engage me about how I've misinterpreted his post, and here's what he really meant. Well guess what, I didn't ask for a dialogue. As a racist white person, your job is to shut up and listen, and then take the actions I demand. This is where we are with The Eyes. You're with me or against me. You're taking the actions I want or you're a racist (or you're the stupid unreasonable player). We shouldn't be surprised, because the polarization is everywhere now, eventually it was coming front and center at the University. I'm hoping that we can collectively reclaim the song with recognition of its history but also all the positives it has brought and still brings. The dialogue on twitter and this thread are really reductionist: "racist," "angry old white guy," "pussy player," "woke." I would hope that everyone had as great an experience at UT as I did; making connections with people of all races and backgrounds - and that was in the late 90's/early 2000's. Of course we want everyone to be comfortable. But you don't have to tear down 100+ years of tradition, the majority of which were not racist and created a net-positive, because of a mistake at the beginning. Just like we don't judge adults for their mistakes as children - or the mistakes of their parents.

Fuck Chris Brown for flexing (multiple times!!!) after tackling the OU player after a 25 yard gain
-
LHB has already been informed that they're playing The Eyes. I assume that the LHB leadership will take appropriate actions if LHB members refuse to play the official school song - and here's a hint: there are a lot more people out there that want to be in LHB than people who are willing to get cut by not playing that song.

Texas opens as a 2 point underdog v Oklahoma

Good point, replace OU in that scenario with someone else who destroys us in that case -

One of three things will happen: 1) We squeak by OU because they throw the game at us and we hear "TEXAS IS BACK" right up until we back our way into the Big XII championship and OU skull fucks us again - 60% chance 2) OU destroys us and we back our way into the championship game again and squeak by with a W there "TEXAS IS BACK" and get destroyed in the non-playoff bowl game... 30% chance 3) Season totally off the rails, lose to KU, we go full Chollie Strong, 10% chance of happening I'm not sure which I prefer TBH. I guess the Big XII win. -

So, can we have a male pattern baldness thread
Horn of Gabriel replied to Gil Bang's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
I started losing it at 18. By the time I graduated UT I was full-on receding. I've cut it shorter and shorter, now in my 40's, if I let it grow I'd have a horseshoe look, not good. I have a trimmer that I use w/o a guard (a zero?) and do it about every 2-3 days. Basically shaving w/ less maintenance. I look back at photos of my in my late 20's and 30's and wonder why I didn't start that earlier. -
Right - you said it better than I did. The UFA game is tilted against the Spurs b/c of the media market and other endorsement opportunities available in bigger markets. Even if we max cap space, if it's a choice between Brooklyn/NYK/LAL/LAC/Miami/Chicago or the Spurs...we lose, and end up holding the bag like we did w/ fucking Morris. All the evidence from the past decades shows this - we don't get good FA's. We get back-half-of-his-career LMA, Malik Rose, and Michael Finley. Now one could argue that we haven't had to compete for FA's at the highest level because we had the core in place, and that's fair. But looking @ all the small market teams in the NBA, it's a pretty clear trend. You might get a single diamond who grows into an all star, but it seems like the trend now is that the biggest star FAs have figured out the power they hold and are looking to move in pairs or triplets. We've never shown the ability to pull that off - no small market has (Cleveland, maybe? If you count Kevin Love?). What we have shown is the ability to execute the Spurs system and grow talent within it - at least for the bench players and solid one-step-below-All-Star rotational talent. We have N=1 datapoint of growing talent to All-Star level in Kawhi, I think it's fair to say Pop and team developed him and raised his ceiling far beyond what was foreseen when we was drafted, whereas Duncan was always going to be All-Star talent and I'd argue the same for Manu and Tony. So we know we can grow up the peripheral players, the question is how do we find the core 2-3 top players. Trade, FA, or Draft? Trade - first we don't have anything worth trading. Our top assets are either at the end of their careers (LMA), not a good fit for the modern NBA style (DD), or too early in their career or we can exploit too much potential that we wouldn't get appropriate value back (DeJonte, White, maybe Lonnie). I see this as zero sum in terms of assets received back, unless we consider it addition by subtraction and are able to dump DD/LMA to free space for... FA - this is a bad place for the Spurs based on above discussion. At least for the top tier superstars. The issue is if we get impatient we might land ONE...but not the 2.5 we actually need to compete in the West. One superstar like a Giannis is enough to put us in NBA purgatory like where the Bucks are about to be: exit the playoffs early, with shit draft position, repeat. The other place for FA is to build around the superstar, but the issue here is that you don't want to get complimentary pieces in the FA market until you have your stars in place because otherwise you bring in the wrong stuff and overspend. Better to hold chips here IMO. Draft - we have demonstrated success here at all levels. We just need to get high enough in the draft to get that next star on the cheap first contract. Once we have that, you can make a legit play for additional FA or trade pieces to pair them up and our superior development and system can take over. tl;dr - what you said, but with more words
-
I just see a max FA as a route to forever purgatory. Today's NBA you need several legit all-stars to compete. We get a FA all-star and maybe DeJonte? He'd have to play at a much higher level than he showed in the bubble. White and Lonnie are marginal all-stars at best IMO. I'd rather go full Process at this point, keep DeJonte, dump LMA and DD, trade one of Lonnie or White (probably Lonnie), retire Pop and he can do front office if he wants or go drink wine all day. Then shoot for bottom of the West and get a lottery pick that's actually useful. Better to eat a shit sandwich for several years than to drink sewer water for a decade or more. My $0.02
-
Just not sure I get the logic...we dump DD and LMA for ...not much....on the long shot roll of the dice on a low lottery pick, and hope to develop White and Lonnie into...something as good or better than DD/LMA? I’m not sure their ceilings are much higher than what we’ve got. The biggest problem Spurs have right now is not who to trade where. It’s unrealistic fan expectations. We are in NBA purgatory and will be for years. Just good enough to occasionally edge a low playoff seed and round 1 exit, not bad enough to get an impactful lottery pick. And not enough intangibles to attract free agents like in Los Angeles. We need to change our expectations. Spurs will be a mid to bottom of the West team for 5-7 years minimum. Or go full Process and tank, which means Pop is out. It ain’t pretty what it is what it is. Watch the Spurs for nostalgia and remember our rings fondly. I doubt we will see more soon.
