Phillies with zero positives from yesterday's tests, team is staying away from stadium for now. Marlins planning to send infected players back to Miami via sleeper buses? Curious about the medical safety of that plan, especially for the bus driver and anyone else who is not infected. Or if it's possible at least one Marlin had a false positive but now becomes legit infected on the bus. What's left of the Marlins will bus down to DC to meet their taxi squad reinforcements and supposedly actually start playing again.

I guess MLB either has to shelve the Cardinals for a week (and maybe the Twins too, since they just faced each other), or else they'll have some explanation like after contact tracing they are confident the affected players have all been isolated, and the series can begin tomorrow.
  3. How can I enjoy the Las Vegas Bowl if I have to keep an eye on Bama vs. Georgia at the same time?
  4. WOW, they're starting 3-4 weeks later than other leagues and SEC champ game is Dec. 19?!? I want to say good on them for giving the region more time to get its shit together re: virus. But I can't help but think it's mainly motivated by a desire to get fans in the stadium.
  5. Just pointing out waves of negativity towards sports in general as the Marlins story was unfolding. Mainly directed at football, since so many other sports are already underway with only a handful of problems. I know the WNBA could run flawlessly, or they could have a 28 Days Later outbreak, and neither would really move the needle for sports in general.
  6. Agree with this. No place in the US has the discipline and cohesiveness seen overseas to hammer the numbers down to where every outbreak can be traced and cut off before it's in the community. Besides our basic behavior, people move around too much so even a smallish town can't prevent new cases from being brought in almost daily. America will simply be a dangerous place for an indeterminate amount of time. Best we can hope for is the future waves are short-term bumps and no more surges that look like the Titan rollercoaster climb.

Blue Jays-Phillies pushed back to Saturday DH to give Phils a five-day break, which health officials said should be enough to allow any positive tests to show up. I applaud the safety, but it's pretty foolish to think they can outmaneuver the virus. I would have scrapped the whole series. We'll see what happens.
  8. The simplest explanation is proceeding with a fall schedule gives them some chance of playing some games and cashing some checks. If they push everything to spring and conditions are not good at that time, then they get zero monies. That simply can't happen. They won't say it, but the spring is still there as a fallback if for example they can get through 8-ish games in fall. They could come back and do conference champ games and a watered down CFP while everyone else does normal spring practice. Everyone making these decisions simply can't see it any other way than to get a season going under any circumstances. Their very careers depend on it. It would take a mass movement by players, students and/or parents to call it off, which I don't see happening.

Zero Phillies positives from Tuesday testing, which is obviously good news but you wouldn't really expect them to pop positive until at least Thursday (with results reported Friday, when the Blue Jays are sitting in town ready to play).

Welp, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale on a radio show, 1-2 of the Marlins went out after a game in Atlanta last week. And with lax regulation of everything in Atlanta, there were plenty of vectors for them to catch the virus. So, I retract what I said about pardoning them even if they do share the info publicly. I mean, I would credit them if they did that (which is unlikely), but how the fuck do you come from Miami and not know you need to stay away from EVERYONE in order to keep your large paychecks intact. Nightengale radio quotes
  11. If you like sports, you should root for this league to run seamlessly through its championship. This Marlins business shows how public opinion is just waiting to jump on any failure to discourage other sports from even starting. (Maybe they're right? MLB is in for a nervous week)

Lots of lessons will be learned from this, none of which require "just shut it down" quite yet: If Phillies somehow don't have multiple infections, that pretty much proves the on-field sport itself is safe. We'll see. Either way, if the Marlins are the only "pause" team and a couple others have to punt a half-dozen games, that's still a sound template not only for baseball but other sports/activities that attempt to resume their seasons in COVID USA. Pretty likely April 2021 will still be risky. Will this be a wake-up call around MLB to take distancing seriously, and all the other petty protocols? Will the Marlins/MLB be honest about contact tracing of this outbreak? It's tempting to shame the Fish, but we really need to give them a pardon if they can provide specific details of what if any behaviors led to this.

Don't make them up at all. If everyone ends up with 48-54 games, that would be a huge win at this point. We can deal with (i.e. ignore) the screeching asterisk whiners when a team with like 31 wins advances to the World Series.

I'm a Phillies fan, but I think it's crazy to have them even go to a stadium until Monday at the earliest (other than for COVID testing). Just cancel this whole Yankee series and also the weekend with Toronto. If we're lucky enough to have no positives, go ahead and resume playing next week. If that ends up screwing up the playoff race, so be it...chalk it up to 2020 and consider ourselves lucky if this is the only fire to put out. Similar for the Marlins. Even if they have to sit in hotels for two weeks, that's better than bringing the whole sport down.

Orioles-Marlins is off as well. No announcement about test results, but the fact they waited overnight before calling these off is probably not a good sign in terms of new positives, especially the Phillies.

I think if MLB survives this week, it's gonna go for a while. I'd like to see team-by-team bets available. My lines for tonight/tomorrow: Marlins o/u 3.5 new player positives (I say over) Phillies o/u 1.5 new player positives (fingers crossed for under) Reds o/u 1.0 new player positives (over)

NBA and MLS are entirely on Disney grounds. They aren't interacting with any locals in Orlando (which is comparatively safer than coastal Florida anyway). Pretty much every human they encounter is being tested regularly.

Plz forget the bubble and don't even bring it up for baseball. It was a logistical nightmare even with time to plan. Arizona and Florida were the most likely locations and they are both swimming in virus now. Plus the weather only allows night games so you'd need a bunch of fields to be rigged up for safety. And television would need to come in and outfit all the fields for their needs. All of which costs a fortune, and of course no fan revenue coming in. And I'm sure many other deal-killing reasons

We could find out any time now. A lot riding on the Phillies tests because in the event there are no new positives who played in the game, that would actually be a good sign that outdoor baseball can be played safely. But if there are multiple Phillies, or maybe additional Braves who also played MIA recently, that's a really bad sign for the sport. It would be kinda funny if the Central and West cohorts just kept going with no issues while East teams have to shut down. Not an idea situation for TV networks
  21. Marlins deal is really ominous. Daily testing and strict distancing should have been enough to keep cases under like five at a time even on a traveling team. If by some miracle this is confined to one team, MLB may be able to keep the games going. But more likely this whole week will feature new cases popping up. If so, I don't know how the Sankey/Bowslby types can get on camera and talk about September games.

The Marlins outbreak may be the first serious crack in any pro league's COVID plan. The team will spend an extra night in Philly rather than crowd onto a plane home, where they are scheduled to host the Orioles starting Monday night. The four positive players have to quarantine in Philly either way. Remember the Braves also lost a couple players, and they just hosted the Marlins a few days back. (Reds also dealing with multiple new cases) It wouldn't be surprising to see new positives soon from the Marlins, Braves and Phillies. Miami can't afford to lose many more without scrapping some games. This will be a nervous week for MLB.
  23. The Yahoo pod said UND is staying in a hotel, basically an NBA style bubble. When you see something like Rutgers and MSU, that's what people are worried about...pretty obvious guys who were together all caught it and passed to one another. That might be from practice or training, or it might be from a house party. We'll probably never know. Another concern is if that MSU report had come out on a game week, they probably just isolate the two cases while everyone else plays. And just hope for the best...

Guess that's why they virtual fans are socially distanced and not in the lower rows whether the players might walk. Seems like a lot of effort, and probably money, for an effect that's barely noticeable.
  25. I liked that pizza! It helped they had a decent beer selection, TVs and were like 50 feet from the betting windows. Similarly, I'll kinda miss Lagasse's Stadium, such an impressive place especially when there's a major event going on. But it didn't feel like you were in a casino way down there. I love the books like Cosmo and Caesars where the general casino crowd is always in view, helps kill time during commercials #ifyouknowwhatImean
