  1. This potentially frees up resources - money and testing - for the fall football schools as they can slow things down for soccer and volleyball for a few months. Same can be said for prepping the basketball teams when that time comes. It's cynical favoritism but these are desperate times.
  2. Baseball is doing great for the moment. To borrow Dan Wetzel's analogy, if you have to drive 20 miles in a snowstorm, you don't start celebrating after mile 5 or even mile 18. But what baseball has done is shown that the 28 teams who have successfully followed protocol can have a fairly normal season (they're like 30 percent done). There is hardly any comparison to college football, I understand. But I think it's fair to make the narrow point that all sports that decide to play need to be prepared to hold steady when they see some positive tests in the beginning. Can they stop occasional positives from turning into outbreaks? At most colleges, probably not. Imagine if it was 4-5 teams instead of just Miami and St. Louis...that probably ends the season.

    2020 MLB thread

    Strasburg ejected...from the stands
  4. SEC meeting also, previously scheduled with no change of course expected
  5. The Dupont case semi-fictionalized in last year's film Dark Waters is in that ballpark. Anyone developing a condition (cancer) related to drinking water in that community could join the suit. But it took years to play out, many plaintiffs never got paid and the company plows forward to this day. The worldwide virus COVID seems like a much higher hurdle to clear in terms of liability than a single company provably poisoning a drinking supply.
  6. Should be pinned to the top of every covid thread. We're 5+ months in, shouldn't we have heard about a COVID lawsuit or two that actually has a chance to stick? Meatpackers, Amazon? Yet you can't read/watch CFB coverage without someone mentioning fear of lawsuits.
  7. WVU comes to Austin, only longish flights are in the final three weeks
  8. League just waiting for the right time to announce we're calling things off, right? Even getting volleyball and soccer in on the grand deception! Three tests per week is basically what MLB has been doing. Not sure where the money/supplies come from but it's a good step
  9. This fracture might provide even greater motivation among the "play" contingent to keep everyone virus-free. They will study the B1G/Pac medical findings and take them seriously. Donors and sponsors will offer more money to improve testing and try to create a bubble-type environment as legally as possible (LOL). Despite some of the public comments, you can't take the "it's not that serious" approach, you have to try to keep cases near zero. IMO, still an uphill climb just to get some games in. We'll learn a lot from campus and K-12 openings as the weeks go by.
  10. Mentioned this earlier, but if either American or Conference USA plays, that would give the "play" group a majority of the CFP board of managers (that's what they call their governing group). Seems like a no brainer if they can swing it financially, especially the AAC champ would have a legit shot at the playoff (Memphis favored, Cincy and SMU both pretty good). That would leave the Rose Bowlers playing their spring conference games for...maybe a few sympathy poll votes? Ohio State can win every game by 40 and it would be tough to justify over an SEC/BIG/Clemson team that won its conference plus a semifinal and NCG.
  11. That one ref's biceps the only structure this conference got right now
  12. Casillas tweet might just mean everything is on pause to line up with SEC 9/26 schedule
  13. I expect all will cancel within a day or two, but there are some bizarre options at the moment. If the ACC, Big 12 and SEC decide to push forward, and the Sun Belt has already announced it intends to do the same, that would give that group five of the 11 votes on the College Football Playoff board of managers (Notre Dame has its own vote and they are ACC for now). But you would only need one more conference between the American and C-USA to play in order to have a majority of the board. That's probably not a hard sell in either case (both offices are in Dallas). So in theory they could vote to hold the playoff on schedule without the fall defectors.
  14. No doubt it will, from the outside anyway. The Marlins will always be mocked and shamed online, but MLB kept going and the Marlins themselves got back on the field. FC Dallas starts its season tomorrow. NFL positive guys are being reactivated daily. There are other examples, and hopefully we track all their COVID alumni and don't see any major complications.
  15. If a conference hitches its wagon to myocarditis, they either believe COVID is likely to transmit during games/practices (maybe, but see below) or they think it's such a danger that there really shouldn't be anyone on campus at all. Why have athletes been doing indoor weights and cardio, if the communities are still so risky? Shouldn't all fitness on campus be shut down?

    2019-20 NHL

Flyers are hitting on all cylinders, including a hot and talented goalie with a very capable backup. Were playing really well before COVID and came right back the same way. Mostly healthy at the moment, very deep roster. So this being the NHL, within a week or two they'll probably be a complete mess.
  17. Pos rep for "WEONG SITE"
  18. What's weird is that there are probably a dozen other serious after-effects that have been seen and studied around the world in recent months. But the presidents are just now latching onto this one? Not to dismiss the threat, but this feels like a shiny ball some good writers got their hands on and we're gonna bat it around for a few days. If they want to postpone the fall, they should simply say the virus spread continues to be too high in their communities to risk conducting a large-roster, contact sport with no bubble and limited testing. Pretty sure every P5 has multiple markets still in the "High Risk" level.
  19. ESPN article on myocarditis and COVID talks to quite a few doctors and specialists nationwide. My take is this is definitely a high priority - it took out that Indiana freshman and also the Red Sox best (?) pitcher. But the consensus seems to be it's not going to be all that common, and now that they know to look for it, will be easier to recover over time.
  20. No way it's 12 games. They've already shown they can cast aside non-conference games, but they value their championship games. My guess is 8-9 regular season spring games, plus CCGs and CFP. Then shorten the 2021 fall by a couple games to compensate.
  21. Fraschilla twitter has been rattling towards off the hinges the last couple days
  22. The cold reality is the B1G/Pac actually do have enough clout to make the others look reckless if they try to play. There's not enough time for many players to transfer, and the good ones will go pro anyway. I'm curious if some G5 league like Sun Belt or MWC would try to just play in the fall for TV purposes. They aren't making the playoff, and might be able to keep whatever pro prospects they have for a fall season.
  23. There are some good points in the Klatt video, though he doesn't explain why he called out the media on twitter the day before. One thing he mentions but doesn't spell out is the massive testing programs the schools were beginning to implement...players and staff are much safer continuing to go through that process than just shutting it down, games or not. I guess we don't really know if athletes will still be tested if seasons are postponed. Most likely not, and it wouldn't be surprising if schools canceled their test orders rather than give them to other students/staff.
  24. What is spring football normally, like 6 weeks? I can see them trying to bump that up to 10 weeks or so, maybe play 8 games plus CCGs and CFP. Then carve off a couple non-conf games in fall 2021. TV money will be there, quite possibly some level of ticket revenue too. I know people care about NFL defections, but there will be plenty of great players. Teams will just be younger. That said, it's pointless to speculate on the COVID situation at that point.
