  1. 15 minutes in, ESPN does game-by-game predictions for...Tampa Bay Ryan Clark has them 11-5
  2. Ha, I knew the "there will be no football if students aren't on campus" was bullshit posturing. Now the party line is, on-line classes count as campus being open. Brett McMurphy article All the execs share some version of this, with one anonymous guy saying it's a "bad look" but as long as some other students are there, it will work. They also fire some warning shots about how they're willing to play even if some conference members do not...in other words, if Cal wants its full share of TV money, they better get their pads on and hit the field.
  3. Cheerleaders are a nice touch. I was thinking college football will probably have them even if no fans are in stadiums. Probably the bands too, assuming they can spread out a little.
  4. Good call, Adam Scott looked bizarre. I thought it would be worked into the storyline somehow, like he was doing crossfit or something. But I guess that's just how he looks now.
  5. I think the plateau will last around a month. We just have a huge population living in/near poverty, and also a huge elderly population. Their lifestyles don't allow them to fight off the virus. They have no choice but to mingle with others in service jobs, food banks, shelters, nursing homes, etc. Not mot mention their own overcrowded homes in many cases. The media attention naturally goes to the dumbass spring breakers, the Karens and the NRA cultists. All of whom will also have cases, but it's the poor/old group that keeps the numbers sky-high.
  6. I agree with y'all. It' s just that we may be in about the same spot, testing-wise and treatment-wise, in March 2021 as we are in September 2020. That's why I can see them giving it a go, more or less on time. By then we'll know how things went with foreign sports and even some of our own like MLB and MLS. Definitely hard to visualize right now when most of the country is still locked down, barely any hotels in use, flights, etc. And the aforementioned death count.
  7. This is where frequent testing is so important. The teammates - if they continue to test negative - can be safely released much sooner. Maybe the original guy was false positive, or it was dead RNA, or simply a very mild form of the virus. Still risky, but welcome to 2020 sports. But if it's like the Jazz-Thunder game where people on both sides popped up as positive, there will be no choice but to shut it down. We'll have a good example soon with Korean baseball. They have procedures in place to just stop everything for a couple weeks, though I'm not sure what the trigger point will be.
  8. My guess: they'll have procedures in place, most likely 1-2 sporadic positives will just be isolated while everything continues. But two or more teammates or participants from the same game will probably shut the whole team(s) down for two weeks. That could be as inconvenient as the annual hurricane postponements or it could bring the whole sport to a stop. Not having ticketed fans makes re-scheduling easier FWIW. The biggest hurdle, as with everything in the US, is lack of consistent and reliable testing. Everyone is just hoping that can be improved dramatically by September, but it's hard to see right now.
  9. Thought they all found their characters again really well. Loved the minor character drop-ins especially Dennis (but missed Jean Ralphio's sister). The sound/video from Aziz was pretty weak but otherwise technically really good show. Hope it got a huge rating and maybe can spur some other quarantine episodes just for something fresh.
  10. Also today, Iowa said they plan to open campus June 1 and that includes allowing college athletes to practice and work out. And Bowlsby was on Sirius XM where he seemed to indicate that he thinks football will start some time during the fall, but he is worried that all sports will have to stop-and-start based on outbreaks. He is concerned that CFP and March Madness will get canceled. I'm paraphrasing the DMN summary of his interview, I assume he was qualifying all that as hypothetical
  11. Fans will tailgate even if campus is being actively bombed by Russian jets Seriously though, any outdoor sport that comes back with no fans is going to have to take tailgating into account. Not to mention fans hanging out as close to the stadium as possible, watching/listening to the action and cheering as loud as possible so players maybe hear them.
  12. France cancels remainder of Ligue 1 and 2. Still a chance PSG and Lyon can resume Champions League but who knows. That's a pretty big domino to fall here in April
  13. Wish you hadn't used Mets for the example because in that case I'm a no. But I'd be fine with like 25 other teams celebrating a gimmick championship. The idea is still to be a best-of-7 LCS and WS, so it's not like the trophy will be awarded based on a broken bat 2-run hit or something.
  14. Jeff Passan column on damn-near everything MLB related Too much to even pull some quotes. I like that MLB is keeping an open mind to a bunch of different formats based on when it's possible to play (without fans sounds like a given). If it gets pushed back well into summer, they might even try a World Cup style tournament to determine a champion as opposed to a regular season. The collective bargaining and minor league subjects are a little depressing. Passan thinks the bargaining will be ugly but somehow resolved because there's too much on the line. The minor leagues are in trouble though, not sure what can be done there.
  15. Just getting COVID at all can really screw up their careers though...respiratory damage that can be permanent
  16. So frustrating. They make incredible decisions on UDFAs and regular FAs to fill out the roster, but the drafting is fucking ridiculous. You can't use Hurts in short yardage, Wentz is already really good at that and it's supposed to be "his team". Hurts couldn't really pass at the NCAA level much less NFL. I guess we have a great scout team Dak for the two Cowboys games at least. Was OK with the Reagor pick in round one, he'll catch some balls and that's better than surrendering whatever resources were needed to move up for CeeDee.
  17. That South Carolina guy sounds like a shot at the Pac-12 or at least the Bay Area health director who pretty much already said no sports before Thanksgiving. Long way to go. The good news is college sports leadership sounds very aligned to making football happen even if it has to be delayed. The bad news is everyone is counting on both the COVID curve and testing/treatment to drastically improve in the near future and that may be too much to ask based on results as of now.
  18. This is a really good discussion of the 90s playoff teams, mostly focused on '96. I always thought Johnny Oates was the perfect manager for that type of team, mostly veterans but some really important young guys too.
  19. The thing about that...
  20. I hope they don't spend a bunch of time next season on some scheme against Howard
  21. The dominoes will fall en masse sometime in May. No one wants to go first and risk a few days bad publicity. Still a few weeks where some sort of Hail Mary mass-testing news could land, so no need to rush the announcements yet
  22. Korea Baseball Org has been approved to start exhibitions this week and regular season in May (no fans though)
  23. Comprehensive column on return of sports by an epidemiologist My takeaways: We MUST stick with lockdown for a while; the better we do now, the sooner we get sports (attn: state capitol stormers this week) Testing, tracing and treatment advances will obviously be key When sports do come back, the fewer people involved, the better (i.e. no fans, golf/tennis before team sports) The "bubble" leagues are possible but really tough to pull off safely Pro will be easier to bring back than college
  24. I looked up the local venues that I tend to go to shows, and if they have an employee fund then I have donated. Hopefully some of them got in on the small business relief last week, or at least can grab a low-interest loan later this year. It will be a tough year but at least they have a proven business model that will certainly be viable again when the time is right.
  25. To be clear, I do think most campuses will stay closed for fall. The message from the sports side has been this stuff won't be decided until mid-May or so, which makes sense as we are still seeing a high volume of new cases each day. Just like with the conference basketball tournaments, at some point the medical reality will hit everybody like a wave. That said, I also think the "can we open just for athletes" question will pop up again. Maybe for basketball if it looks like they can safely play their normal schedule.
