  1. This Lakers fan is bummed. RIP, Jerry. Nobody ever had a better overall basketball career than you.
  2. I haven't flown SW a ton in the past few years due to COVID, working remotely, reduced # of work trips, etc., but I can tell that it's not operating at the level it did 10 years ago. And that's a shame, because IMO in its prime it beat the pants off most other major carriers in terms of price, convenience and service. That said, I haven't had terrible experiences in my recent SW flights -- instead, things have simply gone from good to meh. I still think SW is useful for quick jaunts from where I live in the LA/Burbank/Ontario area to places like Vegas, Phoenix, Bay Area, etc. For longer trips, I'm typically booking with another airline.
  3. Yep. I was getting ready to kick Chevy's ass but Belushi stepped in between us. BTW, we improvised most of that "pool or pond" scene.
  4. Yeah, but who blew up the whole damn golf course and got away with it? Answer me that . . .
  5. Gee, what ever will the Lakers do? Hurley was the only good coach in the entire universe, for chrissake!!
  6. I did the same thing -- stayed at an AirBnb in Driggs 5 years ago when we hit GTNP -- for the same reasons. I feel for the hospitality workers who use that road daily to get to their jobs. I'm wondering what kind of temporary fixes can be put in place to help both the businesses and workers. The alternative is a long-ass drive.
  7. I was prepared to make a joke in response, but I just couldn't do it. Yeah, I know this is Surly, but . . . As someone who's been to the American cemetery over there, it's pretty sobering when you see all those white crosses -- rows upon rows -- and think of what those boys faced that day.
  8. I am pissed off that work is blowing up & I couldn't follow all the events commemorating the D-Day landings. Never forget the sacrifice.
  9. Reminded me of the Marvin Barnes (legendarily crazy ABA player) "I ain't gettin' in no time machine" story. Google it. For those of you who have been to Mammoth Cave, is one day sufficient to see the highlights?
  10. Garden of the Gods is pretty obligatory. Tour the Air Force Academy. Do the drive up Pikes Peak. Royal Gorge is an easy drive from the Springs. Day trip to the Cripple Creek/Victor area. The Broadmoor's grounds are worth a stop, IMO.
  11. Yep -- stayed at a place we found on VRBO or AirBnb when we went to Kauai, and those roosters were the spawn of Satan with their crowing at 3 a.m. Didn't have any issues recently on the Big Island, though.
  12. Did Kauai 17+ years ago, so my info is obviously dated, but Wailua Falls was cool and Ke'e Beach just before the Na'Pali coast was outstanding. Weather/clouds prevented us from exploring Weimea Canyon -- our one big regret. I also agree with wild turkey in his post above that a copter tour of the Na Pali Coast is worth it. I would do that again or perhaps a boat tour of the Na Pali Coast or both. Macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup at Kountry Kitchen in Kapa'a for breakfast FTW. The wife and I hit the Big Island last month. Mauna Kea is awesome. Rent a 4WD vehicle so that you can go all the way to the top. Just make sure to acclimatize for a while at the visitor's center before doing so. Other highlights include Wai'ipo Valley. Do the tour that take you down to the valley floor. It's a bit like going back in time. Hiked to the green sand beach near the southernmost point of the island (and the entire U.S.) -- one of only 4 such beaches in the world. Volcanoes NP was cool, esp. near Kilauea crater and the drive down to the coast. Just wish we could have seen lava flow. Kaaloa's Super J's in Captain Cook for great down-home plate lunches. Try the lau lau pork.
  13. I always viewed this game with a "win/win" attitude. If Gata wins, that's fine because fuck OU. If OU wins, that's fine b/c it gives Texas an opportunity to slay the giant and get some revenge. Now go get it done, ladies!
  14. You should probably clear it with your wife in advance in case she's the type who hates being groped.
  15. I'm not a Cowboys fan at all, but that dude was probably the most dominant O-lineman I've ever seen. Munoz and Hannah are in the convo, but in terms of sheer dominance, I don't think there was anyone ahead of Allen. What a tragedy to die so young.
  16. +1. Will continue to root for the Purple Aces.
  17. Sorry for the necro bump, but this came up on a news feed. This bit of news will certainly quell all the controversy relating to Ruggs' sentence. [*eyeroll*] After the link, I've C&P'ed the first three paragraphs of the article, which contain the key facts. https://www.yahoo.com/news/ex-las-vegas-raider-henry-191437380.html Former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III is working at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion in Carson City while serving his 3-to-10-year prison sentence, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned. Ruggs, 25, was sentenced on Aug. 9, 2023, after pleading guilty to driving drunk at 156 mph and crashing into a car killing 23-year-old Tina Tintor and her dog. The crash happened in November 2021. Prosecutors had said Ruggs’ blood-alcohol level was 0.16, which is twice the legal limit. Ruggs is serving his sentence at Stewart Conservation Camp in northern Nevada, a facility which houses minimum custody and community trusty inmates. Ruggs is classified as a “community trusty,” according to the Nevada Department of Corrections. In that job, community trustees work for government offices making $2.50 an hour.
  18. Fast forward to the 1:15 mark to avoid the pre-song chatter and interpreter. I've always kind of liked Roddy Frame's take on VH's hit.
  19. Next time, think it threw before you post.
  20. When Cheap Trick put this album out in 1997, the band hadn't released a really good, cohesive album since the early 80's, IMO, and arguably not since Dream Police in 1979. Between 1982 and 1997, they had the occasional hit and some good songs here and there, but their albums were inconsistent or (in some instances, such as The Doctor) downright bad. But this one was a roaring return to form. Too bad their label went under right after it was released, which totally screwed any promotion an otherwise stellar album should have received. I dug pretty much everything R.E.M. did up through Automatic for the People, but after that my interest started dropping off. I like some of their post-AFTP stuff, but much of it is meh. However, I thought their last album, Collapse Into Now, was really good. Maybe knowing they were going to be calling it quits motivated them. I think the Johnny Cash example noted above is a good one, too. Also, after slogging through much of the 70's with spotty results, the Kinks put out Low Budget, which rocked. Their next two albums were pretty good, too.
  21. When I was 30 and in reasonably good shape, I did the south rim to the bottom and back in one day. This was in April and the weather wasn't too warm, but I nevertheless bonked as I got close to the rim on the trek back up. That last mile or so SUCKED. Unfortunately, my time in GCNP was so long ago that I don't really have recommendations . . . other than don't do a down-and-back in warm weather and don't do it unless you're in good shape. The elevation loss/gain is no joke.
  22. Clearly a walk, but it's a cold day in hell when they call traveling in the NBA anymore.
