Society has changed. Much more designed to get in your pocket than it was in then. Every time I pay for a car wash, yard guy or oil change, I can hear my father in my head telling me I’m wasting money.
My parents literally had the same furniture my whole life. I never wanted for anything growing up. But, it was a different mindset. Eating out was Luby’s. We didn’t get cable until 1980 and there was no way my parents were going to pay for an extra phone line for me to chat up my friends. Most of my clothes were hand me downs. We took driving vacations and stayed in roadside motels. I remember eating pimento cheese sandwiches out of a cooler at roadside rest areas. My father performed tasks around the house that I would have no clue about how to do now.
When my parents passed, they were sitting on a very large sum of money. They could have had nicer things but they really didn’t feel the need.
