  1. My daily driver set is a maple Fibes set with 22x18 kick. I honestly couldn’t tell you the frequency it’s tuned to but it’s sweet spot is naturally pretty low. I also dampen it significantly but that’s mainly because of the room I’m in. My kick batter head is fairly tight and pretty asymmetrical from the lower tuning on the resonant side. In my most common setup with the Fibes, I also have an 18” second floor tom that is wall-shaking low. Much lower tonally even than the kick. It growls. And I let that motherfucker ring out in all its glory!
  2. That’s purty. Would sound great with an even beefier kick in that mahogany. But I tend toward lower tunings all around. (Snare notwithstanding)
  3. That Pearl kit is nice and I used to have a similar Pearl setup but honestly the finish, hardware and versatility wasn’t as good as what your DWP will have. It’s hard to go wrong with the current breadth of quality, mid-pro level kits from all the major makers, but you did great with that buy.
  4. That is a beautiful kit. And I like the relatively large tom sizes. It’s gonna sound great. And anyone who’s read any of my drum posts knows I consider the Ludwig BB as the absolute best, most versatile snare out there - that size is my go-to, day-to-day. Now have fun blowing your budget on cymbals… for the rest of your life! (Gonna just buy a “few”….. yeah, that’s cute. You just wait - it’s simply not possible to walk into a place like DCP or Pro Drums Hollywood and not walk out with something shiny and round). Well done. Rock on.
  5. I’d generally only look at 5” depth or smaller in piccolo snare. A 6.5” can do much of what a 5” can do finally, but the reverse isn’t true if that makes sense. And seconded on the Supra - lots of great snares - and some of the most famous recordings over the years - bear that name. And tend to be much less expensive than the Black Beauty (which might be the only snare with a better recording and performance pedigree). Of course lots of that is a generalization because as runge has noted a bunch, every instrument is different and heads and tuning prowess can make many many many drums sound great (not to mention mic and room, etc)
  6. Thanks for the heads up. DCP is great.
  7. No passport card. And my regular passport expired in 2021 when I wasn't ever going anywhere so it just slipped my mind. And then, boom, Canada trip incoming.
  8. Hi, all. Looking for any advice on a conundrum I've gotten myself into. Long story short, I have a work meeting in Montreal and my passport has expired. I have to travel Sunday, so even the most aggressive expediting services can't turn around a passport renewal that fast. My f up, but here I am. So, I won't be able to fly, but I'm only 5 hours away so was thinking of driving. Online, it looks like you can travel to Canada as a US citizen with a birth certificate and valid US drivers license. But it's vague. According to US Border Patrol, I can use birth certificate and drivers license to get back into the US, but might have some delay at the border since it's not a passport. Pre-Covid used to be easier on all these things. Has anyone gone back/forth to Canada with non-passport documentation or have any relevant experiences or advice?
  9. Thanks Neon. Makes sense. And on the point above, I get that he didn’t arbitrarily elevate the charge or crime, I meant more broadly that he wouldn’t be haphazard about such a consequential indictment. Lots of the media seems to be suggesting this is a long-shot of a case, and while I know this is without precedent on many levels and has, on its surface, some clear hurdles, Bragg and the GJ must be seeing something pretty clearly worth the risk, so to speak. Of course, I guess it always comes down to 12 of our peers, so god help us there….
  10. I’m assuming all of this ogling is happening in your living room post-purchase, correct? That is indeed a purty rear-end.
  11. Well, my bluebird tenant seems to have bailed. Haven’t seen him (or his girlfriend(s)) in a couple of days. But in his absence, we have had some pond drama as we have a male/female pair of wood ducks and a pair of mallards both scoping the place out. It’s interesting to watch them kinda awkwardly jockey for space. They also come and go via a feeder creek and they often have confusing little traffic jams which, every time, culminate in the wood ducks hopping out to walk around the mallards (who are about 50% bigger). Also, a week or so ago, the female wood ducks was accompanied by two males and now she seems to have made a selection as they are quite a pair now (assuming it’s all the same ducks). It’s all quite riveting, of course, so I’ll keep everyone closely apprised of the drama.
  12. I’ve been following this closely - both news and these threads - but have two questions I don’t think have been addressed. First, before indicting, does Bragg have to get higher sign off from any higher authority (US AG, etc)? Or is it sole discretion? Or is he just executing the “decision” reached by the grand jury? I ask because the hand wringing about the ability to elevate the relatively obvious falsifying misdemeanor to felony election crime seems silly - somebody somewhere certainly thought the evidence is sufficient to convict before bringing a monumentally unprecedented (and career defining/ending) action to indict. Second, why TF do these cases take so long? With all the motions and actions pretrial, I know they have to give fair and reasonable timelines to the various parties, but why is it on a months-and-months timescale vs “sure you can file that, you have until Friday” timescale?
  13. This thread is getting a little to spicy for me! (And I’ve recently been hitting a bottle of Dave’s Scorpion and Dave’s Insanity. For posterity, the Scorpion is technically hotter but the Insanity uses extract so actually feels a little hotter and also has a bit of a harsher flavor. The Scorpion actually has a nice smoky flavor. These are both my first foray into super hot sauces but I’m liking them. Otherwise, it’s sriracha on everything and either Cholula or Tabasco on everything else depending… I need to branch out some more there)
  14. Ring finger? What are you on steroids?!
  15. Okay new one. Half an hour ago, it was twice as long after noon as it is now until midnight. What time is it now? I know the answer that she will consider correct, but again the language is problematic. Specifically, the first use of the word “now” makes the “correct” answer incorrect.
  16. Well, I don’t have a good enough camera setup yet so no pics, but I did invest in some M5 Nikons to upgrade my yard viewing and it’s been a huge step up. We live on about 2 acres in Westport CT which is a coastal town and our neighborhood is pretty quiet. We also have a small pond and creek and so we get lots of interesting wildlife. We have some off and on resident mallards (2 pairs) and lots of barred owls and herons and egrets dining on the million frogs out there. Yesterday we had a couple of male wood ducks and one female swimming around. We’ve also recently seen some Eastern Phoebes and a Pileated Woodpecker recently. As it warms up we will also see tons of Hairy, Downy and Red Bellied Woodpeckers and Northern Flickers. But I’m most excited about our Bluebird box. Hung it up over the winter and finally this week got a male claiming it and several females hanging around. Gonna start setting out mealworms to help the little guy out. Anyone else have experience with Bluebird houses and feeding?
  17. He was strutting around the coffee shop like Stein Erickson.
  18. Hell yeah. Arc of a Diver is a beautiful gem and Roll With It is a seriously underrated album. Traffic, SDG, and Blind Faith all BEFORE ever making a solo record.
  19. Sex, that’s easy. It’s meaningless. I can understand that. But dinner? That’s heavy. That’s like an hour.
  20. Al, I play drums in Infinite Hiss. It’s not my band, but a friend and long time collaborator so I basically sit in for shows. It’s noisy and fun shit.
  21. I got to meet Chuck Mangione in 1982. A bunch of us went with one of our Cavaliers hornline instructors to a Mangione concert at Ravinia, just north of Chicago. She had gone to college with him. He could not have been a more gracious dude, and he was still riding high on fame at the time. I saw him in around 92 at Moody at SMU and everyone on that stage fuckin brought it. Land of Make Believe French Horn section for the win.
  22. I think the big appeal with White Denim is just that they are all super pro and very good musicians. Their former drummer was one of the best in town (Josh Block) and James is very proficient on guitar. But I agree. He’s admitted that he knows they are a hard band to book - who do they follow? Who follows them? They were also critical darlings their first few albums. And yeah all of the guys playing with Alex are super super nice. And fucking good musicians. I was talking that night with Jake Garcia (bass) about playing recently in Athens and I asked him where they played and he said, totally humbly, “well, no, we were in Athens, Greece” and I was like, ah, yes…. These guys do this for real.
  23. My favorite set (selfishly, of course) was playing with Infinite Hiss at High Noon then walking outside to watch Alex kill it. You probably caught this, but Robb played drums with Alex then took a 10 minute break and walked inside to play with McKinney. Killed it for both sets. White Denim was, well, White Denim. I was only in town about 36 hours but reminded me I have to get back there every year even if I’m not playing. Great vibe this year even with the weird weather and smaller crowds (which might have been why the vibe was so good).
