  1. I know the human motivation: greed. I was interested in the utility beyond personal wealth, which appears to be putting needed liquidity into the market, which is fair enough, but I think the practice needs guardrails that it currently lacks (and that feeling applies to almost the entirety of our financial system).
  2. You can't just come into a thread with a piping hot cup of tea and not spill it. Literally what the fuck
  3. To quote Diamond Joe, this is a big fucking deal.
  4. And I'm sure they're all used very responsibly.
  5. Of course profit is always in the equation for why someone invests. But is there not a difference between someone who invests because they believe in the business and want to have a say in how it's run in order to, ultimately, make more money, and someone who sells something they don't own yet in hopes of manipulating the market for a quick turnaround that probably harms a lot more people than it helps? I believe capitalism with all of its flaws is still the best overall philosophical model to base a society on. But the way we approach it has got to change, and shit like short selling (among many, many other stock-related manipulations) needs to have maybe a few more rules that apply to it. What they would be I have no fucking clue, obv. Could also be that I'm just stupid and naive, but there are worse things.
  6. ...I did. To use a favorite Surly excuse, I'm high af right now
  7. I hate how good of a metaphor this is.
  8. My opinion remains unchanged. Is there an actual purpose other than increasing personal wealth?
  9. Fatty's hair slicks back reeeeeeeeal nice
  10. This was probably the weakest episode of the season so far, but it was still a really good episode of animated superheroes. Lifedeath is a very dense text to adapt, and a lot of its emotional/contextual heft is built up over years and events that weren't touched on at all over the "Lifedeath" segments in the show. That's fine; that's the nature of adapting a narrative in one form to another, and I think they did it about as much justice as possible within the limitations of "children's" animated television show.
  11. That's Uatu, the Watcher, to let you know what's about to follow is a Big Event (strongly disagree with anyone who thinks/says it's Cassandra Nova). Imo, Chris Claremont's 16-year run on Uncanny X-Men is the greatest modern literary soap opera of the 20th century.
  12. That you can sell something you don't actually have yet is bonkers to me.
  13. Agreed, casting could have been better. And Efron was like...fine I guess? I was surprised at the amount of praise he got. Best acting in the movie by far was Holt McCallany as Fritz. Has anyone else itt listened to The Lapsed Fan's multi-multi-part series The Lamentable Tragedy of World Class Championship Wrestling? Apparently McCallany used that as the bulk of his research for his role as Fritz.
  14. I don't really think there's any qualitative comparison to be made between either Dune film and Civil War. Dramatically different in almost every single way, philosophically and aesthetically. If you're a fan of movies, you should see both.
  15. Forget it, Jake; it's Chrispy
  16. Not to mention that it's constitutionally mandated, which Republicans pay a lot of lip service to caring about
  17. I think it's time to let it go, Doc
  18. Imagine thinking that most people don't use USPS
