  1. The intention was to show that when you auctioned your daughter off to a husband for money, that the buyer was getting a virgin and not some used up slut that might let questions about the paternity of the children which might them fuck up property and titles. God you're so gross even with the beard.
  2. Nurses, especially those working within a hospital milieu, are every bit as face-to-face with the worst of society that cops are. Except we don't have badges, guns, handcuffs, or legal authority. While there is some recourse that can happen if you're assaulted by a patient (which I have been, many times), in terms of the patient being moved elsewhere, being kicked out of the hospital (takes a lot), or arrested (takes even more), the amount of work that is demanded of nurses in a hospital right now plus the legal duty we have to make sure that those tasks/orders are taken care of means that it usually isn't worth our time to make anything happen other than the patient being assigned to another nurse. And sometimes that isn't even worth making happen because of the amount of paperwork/reporting involved. Even getting a patient who is unable to reason (DTs, for example) in restraints adds a huge task burden to the nurse who is taking care of them. Sometimes I'd rather just not turn my back on them again than have to deal with the constant assessment and paperwork. I worked trauma/critical care for ~7 years or so. I've been kicked, punched, spat on, pissed on, called every gay slur in the book, illegally recorded, sexually assaulted, and threatened with a knife while in the course of a shift. Not once did I ever see a patient put into violent restraints (meaning minimal voluntary movement, facial restraints, that sort of thing), nor did I ever press charges on anyone who violated me. I also don't know anyone who did. No one has the time, and a lot of people lose their mind while in the ICU, legitimately and otherwise for whatever reason, so there's also always a thread of "well maybe they don't know what they're doing." Administrations love to talk big about taking these sorts of things seriously, but the underlying attitude is, as always, deal with it.
  3. Statistically being a nurse is more dangerous than being a cop, and my license can get taken away for forgetting to write something down. Fuck cops.
  4. Not voting at this point is complicity.
  5. Totino's party pizzas slap idgaf what anyone else thinks
  6. The same reason poor Republicans vote against their own interests. They think they're sticking it to the "bad ones" and that nothing unfortunate will happen to them, so they need to go along to keep their place in their social structure.
  7. Well, it sounds like you know what you should do to feel less poor then
  8. I hope you're right. All I know is that various rights of mine have been continually eroded and lost pretty much for the entirety of my adult life at this point, and they don't really show signs of slowing down, so please have a little grace for those of us who don't have much reason to be hopeful.
  9. And those remaining grow more and more radicalized with every rally. While I agree that you can't let the fear of one person doing something extreme keep things from progressing, I also doubt that it's only one person sending threats. Modern conservatives are moral cowards, and they will let fear dictate their actions. Imagine being afraid of empathy!
  10. I've repped this movie before, but Criterion released a great copy of John Sayles' fabulous 1987 dramatization of the 1920s' Battle of Matewan in West Virginia coal country, Matewan. If that trailer piques your interest and you don't want to search for the hard copy, you can watch the full thing here: Fuck scabs, fuck capital, fuck billionaires, and fuck bootlickers. Solidarity.
  11. Two of today's editorials are essentially about the situation in Texas today.
  12. Let's also not forget that with Kate Cox, the state is arguing that the fetus has rights that trump the mother's while simultaneously arguing that fetuses don't have rights so they don't have to pay a settlement for denying a state prison guard leave to go get her unborn baby checked out (that baby is dead af now, btw).
  13. Just make a vector illustration of a nondescript Handmaid
  14. It's too late for changing minds, holy shit. Women are having to flee the state to get abortions now. And lmao, even if "minds are changed," like in Ohio (sort of...), the Republican-stacked government is trying to find ways to ignore the will of the votes. I guess we'll just have to let them try here, too, right? Cause I mean...we wouldn't know if they'd try it or not until they do. Gimme a break.
